name the moment prince captured your imagination....?

do u recall what u saw..or heard... that made u want to check prince out more seriously ???
4 me , it was my aunt...she had the prince album (his 2nd release) and she kept her records on the floor in her living room...prince's LP was on top of the pile the summer i stayed with her and my cousins "1981"...my cousins called him gay everyday...but all the women thought he looked fine...i even remember a few wanting to get their hair done like his...smile
i was a bigtime michael/jacksons fan at this time...and something about this prince guy just never left me after that summer ...he was different...and the fact that he could play so many instruments ...and that he sounded like a girl singing...left a big impression on me...of course when purple rain came out years later...IT WAS OVER !!! my whole world got princified smile!!!!!
when did u first get the feeling that u had to investigate this dude and his music more...?

yeah, i remember - i was like 9 or 10 years old and my mom and i were up late watching midnight special and they played the video for "i wanna be your lover". we were both floored by this guy who looked like a girl playing all the instruments.

i forgot about him until around the time of 1999, when he caught my attention again, but when i heard the end of "let's go crazy" on a TV commercial for the "purple rain" movie, i was HOOKED. lol

cool I remember first seeing him on Midnight Special. Then looking at him on the cover of his 2nd album (Prince). When he came out with 1999 i started listening more to his music. It was not until Purple Rain that got me into him for good. music

Rasberry Berrett Video..

I just thought, "wow..this is a neat-o and different song"....and it was the first time i had noticed Wendy & Lisa....Wendy was made cool looking in that video.....but it wasnt what got me "into" prince...that didnt happen for years later...but it gave me a fondess for him that would continue until I bought all his back catalog looking for more wendy and lisa stuff....

My first spin of Purple Rain. I was 13. Before that, I loved his grooves, esp. "Lady Cab Driver." Even before that, I loved "I Wanna Be Your Lover" (tho, at 8, I thought it was the Emotions, and did for 10 years). But he had a bad rep in my hometown for a while and I personally thought he was a little "fruity."

Little did I know. After that, for about 6 years, I was totally obsessed with his sound. 21 years later, I still appreciate him and I continue to be amazed.

Rare is the artist that you can credit with making you love music in general. But I give that credit to Prince.

The 1999 video, MTV was still new and I remember seeing this video, I loved the whole stage setup, the firepole, the purple backdrop, the neon heart, the bass drum that lights up, etc.

that whole performance {and the whole movie- which showtime began showing CONSTANTLY afterwards.} turned me into a major prince fan i am today.

i always "liked" him more or less but i wasn't as fanatical as i am now.

it was the uk radio one top 40 countdown programme which was on around 5 o'clock on a monday after the singles chart had been released and i used to tape it(i was sixteen at the time)....this would be around june 1984....the dj called peter powell played the new entry at number 21 which was, of course, "when doves cry" by prince...i remember listening to it and thinking that it sounded very different to anything else i had heard(but not really sure if i liked it).....well once the song finished, the dj came back on and said what a brilliant brilliant record it was....an amazing song from a truly great talent....i was quite taken aback by his gushing praise of this song and artist. i had never heard him be so over the top with his praise so i played the song back a few times and ,of course, realised that he was right....it was a brilliant track...a real grower.
...
...the rest is history....bought the single a few days later....17 days(b-side) another great song...bought the album the following week...amazing and then saw the movie and that was me well and truly hitched.....we have been together for 21 years and id like to thank peter powell from the bottom of my heart biggrin

I knew and liked P...then, in early 85, BBC2 played the Purple Rain live show.

I was blown away.

No 4 min singles. No hits galore. A wierd trip than ended with an 18 min version of a track (wow!).

From the follwing day, I started buying everything.

This is going to sound silly.

But it was a combination of Prince being popular (and a bad boy--There was a HUGE stir over Darlin Nikki and the fact that you had to be a certain age to attend his concerts), and the song "Computer Blue". I was blown away by the sound of the song and the way it only had singing in the first half of it, and the rest was instrumental--it sounded like nothing on the radio.

About three years ago during some music special I saw Raspberry Beret, U Got the Look and Cream videos. That was my first introduction to Prince. After that the next time I saw him was the Hong Kong performance. The next day I bought 'The Very Best of Prince'. In the weeks that followed I had some of the worst experiences of my life. So I laid on my floor for hours everyday playing Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Diamonds and Pearls, SOTT, and Money don't Matter Tonight on repeat for weeks. I think that was the moment.

I've been a fan since. biggrin

It was definately the "Prince" album. I was about 8 years old, staring at the album cover...this beautiful man that looked and sounded like a girl. My attraction to him was certainly different than my bubble gum attraction to Michael Jackson and Foster Sylvers. By "Purple Rain", I'd absolutely lost my mind.
Damn this kooky love affair....

Let's Pretend We're Married..... Listening to it, while looking at the girl I was into.... while she listened to it and told me that she liked to mastrubate to that song..... I was hooked right then!
