The top picture is Marilyn Manson. I dunno what the symbol is, maybe some Manson fans know - looks like the ankh with an inverted cresent, poss. something to do with Satanism?

The bottom pic is indeed the alchemic symbol for soapstone, and the origins of Prince's own - which fused the symbol with his original O+> (male and female signs fused) - which was first seen on the 1999 album cover (I think that was the first instance).

The alchemic theme runs through the early years, and most significantly on the song Gold - the symbology of turning base metals into Gold, is used to signify turning the base human into a more spiritual being.
