Since when did Chaka Khan become a "Prince artist"?

On some of the sites, I see Chaka under “Prince Artist” or “Associated Artists”. Last time I checked, Chaka was a star in her own right and in the game before P. She works and tours with him and now all of a sudden she is his artist or an artist just associated with P.

Am I the only one who finds this odd? Am I blowing this out of proportion, or does Chaka really fall under the P artist umbrella?

You may be missing the point of "associated artist." It doesn't necessarily mean "Prince prodigy" or "Prince creation." It simply means an artist who has been associated with Prince: worked with him, performed with him, etc. Chaka qualifies. I'm sure there are some crazed fammy-fams who are only familiar with Chaka The Great because of this association, but that's another story.

Wendy Melvoin, Larry Graham and Eric Leeds would all be considered "associated artists," but that doesn't mean they aren't accomplished artists in their own respective rights.

guess it depends on the site. considering this is a prince fan site, things may be organized in a slightly more prince-centric way. i think there have been plenty of chaka threads in the non-prince music forum here, too. it just depends on the topic, basically.

She DID have an album on NPG Records, did she not? She is now an associated artist.

Other Artist have records on artist run labels, but it seems like when some artist get with Prince they all of a sudden become his underling.

Miles Davis...no

even Shelia seemed independent

it just feels like Larry and Chaka's career have been absorbed by P.

even Doug E Fresh, maybe it's coming from my casual P fandom, but they don't seem like colabos

If I were to start a thread on Chaka Khan's album that she and Prince worked on together, I would start it in the "Associated Artists" forum. Any other threads about Chaka Khan, I would start in the "Music: Non-Prince" section.

Exactly. If your talking about songs he wrote for Chaka or tours they did together then the topic belongs in the Associated Artist Forum.

If you are talking about "topics that refer to her Rufus days and her solo career with no Prince involvement they belong in the NON-Prince forum. Because let's face it "Hollywood", "Little Boy Blue", "Please Pardon Me","Papillion" "Through the Fire", "I'm Every Woman", an so on don't have squat to do with Prince.
