Prince was weak on guitar until the TRC era.

his early solos are wack, compared to his recent live shows
I was listening to all his solos from the 80's concert
to ones starting from the TRC live era
he has improved

Somebody's bored, or never heard I'm Yours from the 1978 For You album.

Prince established a world-wide guitar dominance with that song and has yet to relinquish it.

i'm sure that there are some "better" guitarist's than Prince in the world, but,to say that Prince's guitar playing in the 80's was "weak" is a joke!
plain and simple.

That is THE most ridiculous post i've ever seen on here.
Ever seen the '83 1st Av gig? '87 MTV Awards? '87 Paris New Morning Club? Electric Chair live on SNL? Computer Blue Hallway Version? His rhythm playing on EVERY ALBUM HE MADE/PLAYED ON IN THE 80s?

Prince "fans" annoy me sometimes. mad disbelief pissed

While I agree that Prince has improved through the years, it is just complete ignorance to say he was "weak" until just a few years ago. Let's hear your playing, you can do better?!

Yowsa...

i actually preferred his guitar playing earlier on. he got a bit too clean and digital for me in the 90's.

well, sure. in the 80s, he improved over his work in the '70s. i'm sure he's constantly improving in SOME way. his "intermediate" work is still amazing to most folks, though.

prince was indeed weak on guitar but only prior to the rainbow children.im talking about (1998-2000) period.
most of his guitar solos were very coventinal, unispired, without all prince guitar elements he is know of.
best example of his unispired period is rave 2000 dvd which is painful to watch and listen.
but it is riducilous to say that he was weak .since the early works like why you wanna treat me so bad and bambi, throught the great contraversy dirty mind non stop guitar playing shows,he was great.

check small club aftershow.on that show prince was wailing like a mad man.
but of course he improved a lot in the recent period.maybe he is focusing more on a guitar.

Weak, how? Prince was always rated in the top of ten Guitar players back in the 80s and 90s. Guitar magazine use to always give Uncle P is props. And even Eddie Van Halen gave Uncle P props back in the day. And if I am not mistaken who played guitar on that "Bambi" track? hmmmm, Uncle P.

I think that you are touching an interesting point with Prince here. One of the most impressive thing with this guy is that although he was gifted he has never stop working to get higher level. It's a lesson for every artist.
But I won't say that TRC is the turning point regarding his guitar skill. I think that around 1993, he began to create solos with real genius (of course before there was Sign O The Times, and some other interesting things).
And it's the same with everything else. Just think that he almost never took a bass on stage before 1994. I think at this time he feel that he had really something to say with this instrument, something personnal.
And let's not speak about vocals, he has always been a great singer but when I heard him doing Power Fantastic in rehearsals in 2002, I was still astonished, the falsetto reached the perfection (and listent to his version of A case of You).
I think that he is really the true hardest working man in showbusiness. There is no miracle.

you dead on it
he has a long way to go on the guitar
lately he has been playing his own set of stock licks, and stock strums
he has improved on guitar since the 80's
the last two tours, he has played the most guitar ever live
he had something to proove and say
which means that, he has gained more confidence in his playing abilities
