"My Name is Prince"

Has a section using thinly veiled language disparaging of "The King."

Just because someone was raised in a faith doesnt mean they are are members for life. Technically MJ hasnt been a JW since around the Bad era in 87.

Is MJ still a JW? I read recently he was.

Maybe if MJ wasn't a kiddie fiddler, a duet would be on the cards!

You know he stepped out of the religion and has been out of it for a quite a few years, but I'll tell you what, now that he is a free person and was aquitted on all charges, I'll betcha he'll try to break down the doors to kingdom hall now if it'll keep him out of the courtrooms. One thing that stuck in my mind is something Prince said in of his recent interviews. I believe it was talking about the JW congregation about how he was glad he was in it because
quote: "It keeps me out of trouble"

MJ may not even go back to being a JW, he might be through with it for good, but I wouldn't be surprised if Katherine talked him back into getting back into it.

Prince called MJ a 'genius'.

And maybe he isn't the guy's BIGGEST fan, but I'm sure there's respect.. his fans just don't want him to have any.

Thank you.

I don't think Prince hates MJ now or ever. I think he probably wonders what's up with him like most of us do, but I highly doubt that he hates him.

Aren't they friends? MJ has wanted to collaborate with Prince before, but I don't think he'll ever want to do that because he wants to separate himself professional from MJ. Prince doesn't like being compared to MJ, someone who isn't nearly as musically gifted as him, but sells fucktons more records. Really, there's no reason to compare them because they have almost nothing in common.

As 4 MJ being a Jehovah's Witness uhh hes been abandoned that religion and I dont think he went or is going back...I think the only Jacksons who are Jehovah's Witness is Katherine and Maureen.

That's funny that you would think that.

That line never has been any kind of jab at MJ... it's a jab at Prince's critics.

How so? Sorry, but I think this lyric is a clear reference to MJ's ridiculous rationale in the Bashir interview, but maybe you can convince me otherwise...?

At the time, there was alot of criticism that Prince was losing his talent, as he is getting older.

There were comments floating around from critics that he could't hit his high notes anymore, and that his youthful appearance was due to plastic surgery, i.e. a nose job.

I never thought about Michael for one second (yes I saw the MJ Documentary), I never even thought about an MJ connection, until someone misunderstood the lyrics, and started posting the rumor (which is still widely believed) that it was about Michael.

I completely disagree with that rumor. Within the context of the song, it has nothing to do with MJ.

i'm not saying prince hates MJ, but he is refering to the man at the least, dont you think?

Yes P is referring 2 MJ but like i said b4, that Prince is a prankster and pokes fun at people thru his music or even challenges others 4 friendly competition like he did with MJ by challenging him 2 a game of pingpong. Just like M. Jordan challenging his good friend Charles Barkley in a round of Golf.

Stunning thread in a number of ways.

Prince certainly has made a number of (mainly playful) jibes at MJ throughout his career, so it is surprising to see just how many people here think he hasn't.

However, what is more surprising is that nobody has actually quoted the most blatant MJ diss in Prince's career (and, no , it isn't My Name Is Prince, as someone suggested - though that is still aimed at Mike);

From "The Truth" CD - Fascination

The most "vital thing in pop"
Is the eptiome of doom,
You wake up in a cold sweat,
Coz one of 'em's in your room,
Singing from the telly,
Makin' more buck than sense,
So-called "King" gives birth to so-called "Prince"

Not only does Prince ridicule Jackson, but his musical siblings and the naming of his child (which, obviously irked Prince to some degree!!!!).

That don't seem like friendly competition to me, or whatever it was peeps were talking about - but, IMO, its damn on point what Prince says and makes me laugh every time lol

rolleyes I don't think Michael naming his son Prince bothered Prince. If it did he should get over it because Michael's son is named after MJ grandfather, also named Prince

Ok - so what do those lyrics mean?

It ticked Prince off (not enough to be troubled about it I'm sure), but enough to write a witty lyric about and he's loading the lyric more to call him the "so-called King" - its moreso clever word-play. Its not about whether P was pissed about it, its clearly about his disdain for jackson's self-proclaimed status as "King of Pop", whilst selling out to pepsi commercials etc (singing from the telly), then wryly joking about the choice of name for his child, you know, irony?!!

Some people need to get over their preoccupation for attempting to vindicate MJ at every turn.

Just to clear up the JW thing here. Michael WAS a Jehovah's Witness, but was dis-fellowshipped in the early 80's (something to do with representing demons - I wonder what that would have been).

So, yes, programs like "Michael's childhood" or whatever it was will talk about his JW faith - but he was booted out of the religion for putting his music before his faith.

That's not true. Michael was not disfellowshipped. He was threatened to be banned from the JW faith for "Thriller" becuase of its association with the occult. That's why he put that disclaimer on the short film before it comes on...he did that so he wouldn't be banished and swore he would never make another music video like "Thriller" again. However, in the early 90s, Michael decided to leave the JW faith on his own for his own personal reasons.

Actually to clear this up a little more MJ Dissassociated him self back in 1987 back around the Bad era. Which probably had to do more with people around him than himself at the time. It had nothing to do with thriller since thriller was five years earlier.
