Joni Mitchell discusses Prince in NY Magazine

A great shout-out from the May 9 issue of New York magazine! The article was entitled: "Influences: Joni Mitchell. The folksy songsmith discusses great artists and synchronicity. Just don't call her a poet."

Q: But even when you were somewhat obscure, so many musicians were citing you as an influence or even namechecking you in songs. Of all the musicians and rappers who have cited you as an influence, whose work do you appreciate most?"
A: PRINCE. Prince attended one of my concerts in Minnesota. I remember seeing him sitting in the front row when he was very young. He must have been about 15. He was in an aisle seat and he had unusually big eyes. He watched the whole show with his collar up, looking side to side. You couldn't miss him-- he was a little Prince-ling. [Laughs.] Prince used to write me fan mail with all of the U's and hearts that way that he writes. And the office took it as mail from the lunatic fringe and just tossed it off! [Laughs]

i'm not so sure about that. i think joni has mentioned this before, and that we did put that mention on the front page, but i think this is a new story in which she's repeating herself...same ol' stuff in brand new drag. lol

the part about the fan letters rings new to me, though. the stuff about the hearts and the Us is cute.

I think you are right.

This latest interview is online at:

http://www.newyorkmetro.c...pop/11888/

Joni recounted the occasion of Prince's attendance at her concert in previous interviews - possibly in her Mojo interview from 1994 when she described the song 'Emotional Pump' that he wrote for her, and referred to Prince as a strange little duck ... but I can't lay my hands on the interview at the moment.

Do the words "From the May 9, 2005 issue of New York Magazine" mean anything to you?

No, HE was right.
He correctly pointed out that Joni repeated herself in a more recent article.
It was not the same article, which is what YOU thought.

it's the exact same thing though, regardless of which article is more recent.

at any rate, i'm bored now. argue amongst yourselves.

ya'll are funny.

Handclaps is right in that the story was mentioned before. Anx is right in that the part about the fan letters is new and it's a more recent interview.

A: PRINCE."

Says a lot coming from Joni. Seems like her respect for him is increasing since she has been at the 3121 parties.

Wow. Her previous comments about him came off as backhanded praise from her. It's cool to know, tho!
