Kevin Smith and Prince

On that one night with Kevin Smith DVD what did you think of his experience with Prince? I thought the story was pretty funny but I think he just found it impossible to relate to Prince. I wonder if Kevin listens to much less Prince nowadays after that experience.

What really struck me was when he said Prince went into his whole preaching thing and started explaing the order of Man, woman, child, animal...I am happy for Prince that he has found Jehovah faith and is grounded but I don't know...that kind of thing has me worried. I really hope someone doesn't actually belive that.... boxed

i was at the listening party for TRC in late spring of 2001.... the 'theocratic order' bit was what first clued me into the fact that prince had chosen a path i wouldn't even consider following.

it was the very first time i found myself thinking about a prince work: 'yuck. these lyrics, this entire concept BITES"

prince and kevin smith don't exactly seem to be ladies who lunch these days. i think there was a bit of a scuffle last year when 'jersey girl' failed and prince said something like 'see what happens when you put foul language in a movie?' or some such nastiness. he was just doing a little neener-neener dance after having to endure the rant on the 'night with kevin smith' dvd. rolleyes

Yeah and he made a fool of himself when Kevin put him in check by saying "I'm ok with Prince not liking Jersey Girl. I fucking hated Crystal Ball so I guess were even." CATFIGHT! biggrin

I found Kevin Smith's experience interesting (and funny). It was cool hearing about it from a person who isn't a "fanatic" but also who doesn't "hate" Prince. He is just a guy who had a unique experience working with Prince. I felt bad that Prince didn't thank him though. I really liked hearing the story.

About six monts before that DVD came out, I was at the premier of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back in Austin, and I asked Kevin at the Q&A about his Prince experience. He Pretty much told the same story as the DVD, only a little more in-depth. It was quite enjoyable. In fact, its the only time I submitted a newsstory to the Org that they used it!

While I have no problem with Kevin Smith not wanting to work for free and having a not too favorable opinion on TRC, I find that Kevin can be just as smug and self righteous as Prince. I've seen some of Kevin's dvd's and watched the extras and he just comes off as a know it all asshole. I never saw Jersey Girl, but I did see Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma. And the latter two movies come off very preachy. And while it wasn't in a religious zealot way it was just as obnoxious when the overriding concept of those two movies is 'this is my opinion and this is why I'm right and everybody else is wrong.' And while there were some really funny parts there were parts where the I felt his view point was being relentlessly shoved upon me.

It's not that he comes off as a crass adolescent. He's comes off like a smug prick, (much like his good buddy Ben Affleck). There are people who can pull this off. Kevin ain't one of them.

Kevin Smith is a huge Prince fan, its as though Prince gave Mr Smith a great
project then pulled the table cloth away from him at the
last moment just for badness.
Esp for the second scene in Jay and Silent Bob strikes Back.

I know he's a Prince fan, but my opinion of him has nothing to do with whether he's a fan or not. It's purely based on the behind the scenes stuff from his dvd's.
