Top five overated Prince songs

Which songs have you faliled to see the geinus in that you feel everyone eles thinks of as necessairy Prince essientals. Pick five

If I was your girlfriend-I like the song, and I think the lyrics are wonderful but as a song, ehh it really doesn't do it for me sorry.

Wasted Kisses-Prince's best work in years...uhhh no. Again not a bad song but not that great eaither.

Shhh-Sexy lyrics but he has way cooler sounding music-to-have sex-to songs.

Anna Steisa-OH I KNOW I'm gonna get it for this one but-I really am not that big of a fan-I like the guitar solo but the little Liberatce piano in the beginning OVERKILL! Besides it makes me sad. neutral

Purple Rain-Yes I dare say it. It is a good song and I really liked it when I saw the movie and got the album but I don't know-it is kinda played into the ground and he has way better songs that I like than this. But it still is a good song I guess I just don't know why it is like THE Prince song.

Ok your turn..I'm ready to get yelled at now... boxed

Time to get savaged.... lol

FREE - I know tons of people like this song and I don't get it. I think it's cheesy and melodramatic and that the lyrics are the naive work of a young guy who wants to write a Springsteen ballad but really would rather just write something that'll get him laid (as if a Springsteen ballad wouldn't). The gospel tinge to the song is nice, though I can't help but have images of pink flying unicorns skittering around with glitter coming out their butts whenever I hear this song.

AMERICA - Hear me out. I'm not crazy. I love this song. It's the jam. I love the music to this song, I love the video, I love all 23 damn minutes of the 12" version. Musically? As a funk/rock jam? LOVE IT. Lyrically, it's weak. It's another naive political hand-waiver, and again, I think he was young and didn't have a full world-view going on when he wrote the words to this song. Sometimes the lyrics to this one make me wince...it's definitely something that was written in the Reagan '80s.

REBIRTH OF THE FLESH and ELECTRIC INTERCOURSE - I don't have tons to say about either of these songs, which pretty much says it all. People freak out over these tunes, and I don't get it. They're okay. Nothing special. I like reading about the recording of these songs more than I care to hear the actual songs. I always felt like "Wally" would be a bit of a letdown too, if I ever got to hear the legendary recording of it. Sometimes there's a reason he doesn't release this stuff. They're interesting demos and they make for fun bootleggage fodder, but they've never had the dynamics of his released material of that time - not in my opinion, anyway.

AN HONEST MAN - I don't think I've ever gotten through this track all the way without hitting the skip button. It bugs. The cover version by DUMP is a little better, actually.

5) Kiss
4) Purple Rain
3) Alphabet St.
2) Anna Stesia
1) Adore

I must have really, really missed the boat on Adore. It's a a barely decent tune, yet it seems to be almost universally praised as the best love song he's ever done. It just doesn't do much in my eyes.

4. Bob George - Wasn't ground-breaking... Prince playing "catch-up".
3. Thieves In The Temple - Yawwwwnnnnn.
2. Greatest Romance Yada Yada Yada - Kill me now.
1. Diamonds And Pearls - Still scraping it off of my shoe.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

okay. you got me there. nod

but i DO love 'adore'. i didn't get it either for the longest time, until one day i was REALLY LISTENING to it, and appreciating all the layers that build up toward the end of the song, and how it all comes together in an angelic orgasmic chorus, and thinking that one damn man put all this together, and...wow. just wow.

it's not one of my favorite songs, but i appreciate the hell out of it.

catch up with what.....? The Beatles? This is not a rap. It's a short film. The beat is stupidly simple, to fit the lead character. This is so instinctively brilliant, that I....

Lemme start with a don't-hit-me flinch:

Grand Progression (maybe if he'd recorded in a register he could sing...as is, it sounds like a demo for someone else)

Electric Intercourse/Moonbeam Levels (if these were on PR, you woulda ranked them about with Computer Blue, admit it. They're both just kind of pretentious)

Thieves in the Temple (worst single release right behind Rave's TGRES, which most sensible people know stinks...my hats off to squirrelgrease on both counts)

Peach/Cream/Undertaker (P at his blues-rock blandest)

I finally (and thirdly) gotta mention Annastesia. It's just kind of silly to me, and doesn't rock (or funk) so much.

for everyone who listed 'thieves in the temple', maybe i could get with ya if all i ever heard was the album or single version, but since i rock the 12" regularly, all i can say is this:

put your foot on the rock
i'm gonna show ya how to clock

I must admit, that's me! I've never heard it. Is it really that different? Did he fix it magically with those Flavor Flav-style lyrics?

if you have an npgmc membership, you need to march yourself over to the cyberclips room and watch the 'thieves in the temple' video, like, NOW. yeah, the 'foot on the rock' couplet is pretty dumb, but it's not so much what he's singing as much as it is HOW he sings it. you know how prince can get away with singing silly shit by the way he croons it. and when he starts going on about the kind of love that could part the seas...oof. dancing jig not to mention that the extended part is like twice the tempo of the single cut and it's a full-on funkfest. you gotta hear the extended version, that's all there is to it. nod

I never "got" Adore.

I'm glad I ain't alone!

Over over-rated ones include:

Lets Go Crazy (okay, perhaps the coolest intro in the world, but the rest is a bit embarassing if you ask me!)

Money Don't Matter Tonight - Infact, the whole D&P album. What a shocker!

I find "Dirty Mind" (the album) very over-rated as well. I know practically everyone will throw eggs at me for saying that... but I don't care... I've tried, I've sat and listened, I've given it time... it just bores me.

I do indeed have a membership. Now if only I could get anything on that atrocious site to work with a Mac! Updated: I don't see Thieves in the Cyberclip room anymore sad But I did watch (sort of, more like a slideshow) I Like It There, an underrated track. Is it just me, or does he flip the camera off while playing the guitar in one part?

I will say that I was disappointed when I first heard this single (kept hearing it being compared to When Doves Cry (WTF??!!) which was ridiculous since the only similarity is THAT they're both the lead-off singles for Prince movie soundtracks), since it was the lead-off from GB, but you're damn sure right about the 12". That shit is hot, hot, HOT!!!! Made me appreciate the video and single itself even more. So, whenever I dust off this jam, you betta believe it's the extended version. "U done me wrong/And everybody knows it/Now the sound of my voice is pumpin' in ur chest/More or less I'm here to tell u that/I am the best/Better than the rest/Better than the thieves in the temple tonight (tonight 4x)... Hurt me!" Gotta love it!!

i think most of the stuff i think is overated is ONLY because i have heard them so many times...

like "When Doves Cry".....i kind of let it pass thru the ears without much thought but then i remember when i was driving in my car the first time i heard it and thought...." MY LIFE JUST CHANGED" didn't it...

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who doesn't get Adore. I think it's nice, but I never understood all the hype it gets.

I guess other "overrated" songs IMO would be:
Delirious
Computer Blue
Cream
The Controversy Album (although Private Joy is one of my faves)

just my twocents
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Pretty much your entire list: omfg YOU CRAZY!!!!! (especially raggin' on Anna Stesia!)

Mine are:

It- Boring, and Prince pretty much does the same thing, only better on "Hot Thing"

Cream- I liked this song better when it was called "Bang A Gong (Get It On) by T.Rex.

Come- I LOVED the original version that was featured in the Glam Slam Ulysses show, but I detest the album version.

Pink Cashmere- If it weren't for the guitar solo....bored

What Do U Want Me 2 Do?- This song is sooooo tedious!

2. The most beautiful girl in the world-ok, but since it was his last hit it gets way too much hype
3. The lovesexy album(except for anna stesia)
4. 7-again decent song, but far from the best even from that album
