The CD I have was released as an import in to the uk in '01. It was on Wingspan Records/NPG Records with 2 "snippets" by The Track Squad (rap/r'n'b style - not my cup of tea! and I have quite a few different cups...)

U Make My Sun Shine is on The Chocolate Invasion album download from the Musicology store.

When Will We Be Paid is a rockin' track 2.

I think When Will We B Paid is a fantastic, underrated, angry track.

I heard somewhere it is more or less a cover version (of what I'm not sure - a Maples Singers track?).

Yeah, it was on the B-side of a cd single of U Make My Sunshine, which wasn't from an album at the time, though I don't think it was widely released? Prince made a few CD singles around that time and gave them away at concerts.

Really great track, IMO! Anyone remember the "quiz" you had to go through back then to get to the downlaods?

It was released as a 2 track CD single in 2000 on NPG Records
1. U Make My Sun Shine (featuring Angie Stone)
2. When Will We B Paid? (Staples Singers cover)

There was also an unofficial release through Wingspan records which included a
couple of snippets of tracks by other artists on their label (nothing to do
with Prince or NPG). It was also made available to download, complete with
artwork, from NPGMC.

U Make My Sun Shine was going to be the first single from Prince's then
forthcoming album 'High'. The album was allegedly never completed (though it
certainly had at least one configuration assembled) and the tracklist has
never been made known (despite what some people might tell you). Most, if not
all of the tracks from 'High' were realeased as downloads during NPGMC's first
year of subscription. The track is currently available from NPGMC as part of
the download album 'The Chocolate Invasion'.

The version I HAD was the one with the samples from the other CD. I say "had" because when I was moving back to Texas, it somehow got cracked. It was a small crack at first, but then I put it in my CD Rom to rip it, and it flew apart like a broken mirror! Had to take apart my CD Rom to get all the pieces out, and I don't know where to get it again. I really dug that song. DAMN I Miss it!

Hey, that exact same thing happened to me with a cd once! And they used to say CDs were virtually indestructable...

Does the One who makes the sun shine get paid? Or is he singing about Mani who has already been paid?

When Will We B Paid is a nice track. The original Staple Singers version is much more uptempo, and if you've heard it you know that Prince's slow take on it emphasizes something darker (the original is a demand while the cover is a lament).

I agree, I think the one who makes the sunshine isn't getting paid. Someone else owns the mansions and life of luxury.

I think this song has a lot of great elements:anger, tension, moving mood, great buildup, and a great payoff.I made some cd's for some girls who hadn't been keeping up with Prince lately and that song made 2 of them cry. Theyw ere impressed with my choices.
