Irritants

What things in Prince's musical catalog irritate you? I'm not talking about whole songs or albums you don't like, but those little quirks or foibles that just irritate you every time you hear them.

For me, it bothers me in Love Sign where they sing "...teach the babies replications of the act...." Does he really mean he wants to teach them how to do it again? Or does he really mean implications? Or even repercussions?

And I'd really like to know what's up the the annoying habit of working all the titles of an album's songs into the lyrics like the rap on Jughead or the promo for the o(+> album. Prince, please stop doing that.

What little annoyances just irritate you every time you hear them?

why settle 4 a star when u can have the sun?
--from "the continental"

the sun IS a fucking star. another thing that annoys me: if any of you have a copy of atlanta '80, ya'll know at the end of "just as long as we're together" where it has that repeating guitar chord (thanx to some friggin effects pedal or somesuch)? that drives me batty too.

I could've done without some of the segues on some albums. Also, I'd rather have had never heard before songs over the remixes on Crystal Ball.

It's tongue in cheek...He's making a "loop"...doesn't make it any less annoying.

Any good song interrupted with a rap by Tony M. (Love 2 the 9's). Dumb throw away songs like "Horny Pony." Little things like edits of great songs (Crystal Ball set) like Good Love. If you're going to include it, why edit it? The intro to Joy in Repeition with the talking from Eye No (that completely ruins 'the mood'.) Movie Star with the "JOTY" intro...what the hell was that? That is not even close...and when he unsuccessfully tries to be hip and fit in (Emancipation.) I think that is all that immediately comes to mind.

-That the U.S. pressing of "Lovesexy" on CD was 1 frikkin' track! (yes, I know it's availble elsewhere cut up proper, but Still!)

-The packaging 4 "1999 (The New Master)"

-"Around The World In a Day" CD vs. LP artwork.

Whenever Tony M. interuppted a song with his ramblings.

And whenever P. tried to rap himself. Except Pussy Control, cuz that song's just awesome. smile

I have both the CD and the LP. What's the difference in the artwork? (I haven't pulled either out in a long time)

But you raised another irritant. I know that CDs were kinda new at that time and folks were playing around with the packaging. Most CDs were encased in a cardboard 12" tube so that they could be displayed at the stores in the deeper cases built for LPs. But the cardboard sleeve was completely disposable. With ATWIAD, the cardboard case itself is the slipcover for the CD with a little slot inside to stick the CD in. So now it won't fit in the CD rack I have and it really doesn't fit in the LP rack without possibility of warping the records on either side since it's not 12" deep. Probably one of the reasons I haven't listened to it. I forget about it when I'm grabbing CDs to head out of the house.

These new, cardboard wrapped CD's are annoying too. NEWS and Musicology don't fit in my CD case. mad

The LP's inside sleeve has this beautiful painting of a rainbow colored field and the CD booklet had white print on plain black paper.

That's interesting about the long-box. I never knew the packaging was so unique or, as U point out, annoying.

The booklet from the Gold Experience has the words to the whole CD except for P Control...like the song is a secret even though it's the first track! I never understood that.

It wouldn't irritate you if you knew the real lyrics. The line is "...teach the babies the reparations of the act..."

Main Entry: rep·a·ra·tion
Pronunciation: "re-p&-'rA-sh&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Late Latin reparation-, reparatio, from Latin reparare
1 a : a repairing or keeping in repair b plural : REPAIRS
2 a : the act of making amends, offering expiation, or giving satisfaction for a wrong or injury b : something done or given as amends or satisfaction
3 : the payment of damages : INDEMNIFICATION; specifically : compensation in money or materials payable by a defeated nation for damages to or expenditures sustained by another nation as a result of hostilities with the defeated nation -- usually used in plural

And I'd really like to know what's up the the annoying habit of working all the titles of an album's songs into the lyrics like the rap on Jughead or the promo for the o(+> album. Prince, please stop doing that.
