Prince collectors

How many of you would consider yourself an avid Prince collecter? Seiously I just love his music and the music of his protegees. It is so exiciting finding something I thought I would never get. Kind of like being on a treasure hunt. How many others on the board like me consider Prince collecting one of their hobbies?

i used to get the buzz from collecting back in the mid 80's up to the mid 90's but not anymore the net file sharing cd r,s etc has diluted "collecting".

u wouldnt believe the things i used to do ,... buying rec collector mag on morning of release scouring the pages sending payment, praying the records would arrive from s africa, brazil australia , all over europe "UNDAMAGED"

scouring bargain bins second hand stores record fairs !!

my best two finds were ,....

gotta stop uk 7in picture sleeve mint condition for £2.00 AT A GLASGOW MARKET WHEN IT WAS WORTH AROUND £90.00 !!!

also got the second issue of the same single with a different sleeve in record collector mag for £2.50 WHEN IT WAS GOING FOR £150.00 !!! this was unbelievable as i really thought someone else would offer more than the guy's asking price ! and he'd renage on my purchase.

anyway the buzz l;eft me when p stopped doing proper b sides like feel u up and 17 days etc ! it aint the same when u get 97 remix's of gett off !!! instead o a b side !!

Wow you were hardcore! biggrin Well at least I know someone has a kick out of finding Prince's music as much as I do. I know what you mean about the B-sides. It is like an extra treat not quiet the same as with the Gett Off maxi-single ehh?

I've been at it for about 5 years but it's a lifetime hobby. I've barely even gotten started on the bootlegs. At the moment I'm obsessed with rounding up all the old 80's 12" singles cos the hits/b-sides are annoying edits. The related artists are so frustrating...seeing madhouse, jill jones, the family etc. cds going for over £50 drives me crazy. It's fun to a certain degree collecting all this stuff but I'd prefer them just to be re-released properly. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay 100 euro for ONA Piana Album...I'll just wait until he makes it available for download on NPGMC.

It's good to know people are still collecting, I was begining to wonder if P was still in demand, but it's interesting to hear some talk of downloads, when you talk of collecting do you mean just having a copy or holding out for that elusive original?. You've been collecting for 5 years, what's the market like for you and how much do you pay for old 12's?

I love collecting and the rarer the better, but I refuse to pay exorbitant prices. That's why I mentioned the Piano album..it's recent and was limited so I can't see it being re-released anytime soon but I'm hopefull it will appear on NPGMC so I could at least get to hear it. I'm sure I could probably get a cd-r copy somewhere if I really tried and maybe I will someday but of course I'd much prefer to have the original or something official.

With regards the 12"s and the marketplace... well living in Dublin it's hard to come by Prince stuff (bootlegs are particularly rare) but the prices for 12"s are ok when they occasionally appear.. usually between 10 and 20 euros. I found the Mountains 12" for a tenner a couple of weeks ago. The most expensive I've seen is a Vanity Promo for Nasty Girl at 50 euro. I like having the original singles as opposed to downloads and cd-rs but what I really want is for WB to release a singles box-set with all the original art work and full lenght b-sides.

Other stuff I usually have to find on the intenet. I paid 50 euros for the Madhouse cds but instead of going down that road for the rest I now stick to buying vinyl, much cheaper.

wave Hardcore collector over here too. It's got to the point where the stuff I haven't got is really hard to find or just too expensive! Still I have all the officially released B sides and 12" versions. I'm missing a few promos though (Face Down, Love Sign)
if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

You can find some unusual Prince collectibles on eBay.
Just be sure not to get sucked in by phony crap, though.
