Prince and Carlos Santana

Loved the Jimi vs. Prince debate.

In short, you can't say one musician is "better" than the other--especially if they are from different eras. They both have their respective styles and both can do things that the other can't.

The greatest guitarist of the 20th Century? Maybe Andres Segovia! It all depends on what you mean by "greatest".

The most influential guitarist of the 20th Century? Again, a subjective question. For me personally, I would have to say 1) Prince and 2) my Dad.

So, having said all that--how are Carlos Santana and Prince, *only* on guitar, how are they similar and how are they different?

Prince has always admitted that Carlos influenced his playing. Carlos has also been playing guitar longer than most of us have been alive. He is a master of his guitar, with an unmistakeable sound that is purely his.

In interviews, both men have stated that they cannot read music.

What can we say about their styles?

Some people tell me I've got great legs...

Can't go there anymore. I really didn't want to go there with Hendrix, but that's like trying to compare Joe Satriani and Prince - Santana and Prince are just two different musicians.

But if anyone else wants to play, go for it.

Only thing I can say about this is that Prince does Santana much better than he does HEndrix, I dare to say that sometimes the "Santana MEdleys" that Prince play are more interesting to hear than even Santana himself. But Santana is the man who comes with that pretty melodies, so all credits must go to him. But Prince can do Santana and Santana cannot do Prince.

But Santana can (or at least tries to) do John Mclaughlin!

Not sure about that one. Santana didn't have any formal training as far as I can remember, but Prince did. I just think Prince doesn't compose by writing everything down. He can certainly read music.
