Overall including last night, Prince has won 6 Grammy's. He won 2 for the Purple Rain album, one for writing I Feel For You (Chaka's version) also in 1985, 1 for Kiss in 1987 and the 2 he won last night for Musicology and Call My Name.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

only 6? a shame when you think that some of these 'artists' who couldn't hold prince's jock strap have won 5 or 6 in one night. yet he's only won 6 in his entire 25+ year career. no wonder he didn't show up last night.

shame on the grammy's.

Well considering that Led Zeppelin and Queen didn't win any, who cares if Prince has 6 or 100 it doesnt mean that much.

well that's a shame too, but we're talking prince here not zepplin or queen. anyway, a lot of 'artists' who've won 5 or 6 grammy's in one night couldn't hold their jocks either.

Here is a more difficult question:

How many Grammy nominations has Prince had during his entire career?

I answered that one a couple months back (made a nice detailed list and everything) -- sure would be nice if I could find that post, but the search function doesn't work. His first nomination was for "International Lover" believe it or not. Sheila E. was nominated for "Shortberry Strawcake" which is actually a Prince song. And Prince was also nominated for best long-form video "Prince & The Revolution Live." I think he has over 20 nominations. The Gold Experience and NEWS were his last nominations, previous to Musicology's 5 nods.

CAN SOMEONE WHO HAS THE POWER PLEASE FIND THAT THREAD? It wasn't my own, but it had to do with Prince and the Grammys within the last two months. I don't understand why we can't go back in time on this site anymore. We used to. But now we can only go so far. I can't even look at more than my last 30 or so posts. This is NOT cool!

This is ANOTHER reason why someone should be compiling all these FACTS into a FAQ.

Back then, I don't suppose there were quite so many awards - now there are a stunning 107, so acts can win in a lot more categories with the wonderful distinctions of 'Traditional R'n'B' and 'Contemporary R'n'B' and they wouldn't have had the 'Best Rap' award! You could argue that the awards are becoming meaningless as they keep subcategorising every year...

Absolutely TRUE. It is a shame that he only has 6 grammy's. He should have won at least 12 in his entire career.
