Prince gave a shout out to Mojo at his first show at the Palace this past summer. Mojo played a wide variety of music on his show, not the stupid play list that everyone else does. I just want to thank Mojo for opening my ears and allowed me not to be stuck with one or two types of genre. Perfect example is Abacab by Genesis, I never heard of this group, but Mojo would bump the hell out of this song. Mojo put techno on the scene also by playing My Cosmic Car.

Back in '95 if I'm remembering it right, Mojo's book of poetry and writings was finally published, "The Mental Machine" ... 90's listeners will remember spots on his shows that would turn up at different times, where you'd hear Mojo reading dramatic poems and pieces, with different sound fx and thangs happening in the background... "This is another page from a book called The Mental Machine..." So in '95 I started rolling around to different bookstores looking for it, cuz I asked Mojo on the phone one night when it was going to be available... Finally found a store on 12 mile that said they could order it from the publisher. When it arrived a week later, I opened after I'd picked it up, and the inside says, written in marker,

"May the angels keep you. Watch the skies, Mojo"

Damn right I've been watching the skies ever since, but the mothership never returned...

One thing I never got a chance to say to you, Charles, [Yes man, with all due respect, I'm gonna call you by your name! haha!!], is THANK YOU. I was 9 years old when I first heard your shows, and I was just discovering music, and you played it ALL. The first night I listened to you, I consider that to be the night I Woke Up. And it's Your Fault I became a fan of all the Minneapolis music. Damn you!! HAHA. New Year's Eve, 1984. Your entire show: Prince. For five hours yall! Anyway, May the angels keep you too, Mojo.

My question for this Q & A is:
Your shows always shined when it was obvious that you were doing and playing exactly what you wanted to at that time, you weren't a DJ that ever seemed to just go through the motions. Was there ever a time when you wanted to do something on a show, and it simply wasn't allowed?
And, how about a story of something you Didn't think would go over, but you tried it anyway?

Because of you, I'm a Prince Fan and an Electronic music fan and producer. I'm originally from Flint Michigan and used to listen to your show when I was kid.

My Questions are,

1. Prince has often said that Detroit is one of his Favorite places to perform. Why do you think this is true?

2. Also, Do you still keep up with the Detroit Underground Techno Scene? Do you still have ties with Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, Rob Hood, etc. and are you keeping up with any of the new cats from that area. i.e. ( i've been doing shows there with the Detroit Techno Militia.

Hi Mojo! I’m from Los Angeles and I truly wish we had u when I was coming up. Listening 2 others speak so highly of u diffidently lets me know no one can take the place of u. I just want 2 let u know I have the utmost respect 4 u and hope one day when Prince Story is truly told and put on film that u will b included. “Mojo you’re the Teacher and the Original True Funk Soldier”.

Question:
Being a fan as u r, have u continued 2 keep up with Prince and his music? After leaving radio did u attend any of his concerts and did u get 2 see his Musicology show? Some of Prince Fans feel he has lost it musically and can never be as creative as he was in the 80’s. What is your take on his music 2day and how does he continue 2 be heard with such little air time with Hip Hop and Rap clogging the airwaves?

The Electifying Mojo!!!

That name brings back great memories of living in Detroit from 80-83!! Thank you for introducing me to Was(Not Was) Roger & Zapp, and countless other funky people back in the day! I used to sneak down to the radio station and peek through the glass to get an idea of what you and the other dj's looked like!

Anyway, my question is:

How often did you upset the management by playing extended jams and playing an entire album from an artist! (I remember that you would do that !)

I also want to know who was the most outrageous artist that you had to interview back in the day!)

All this strolling down memory lane has seriously made me recall the reasons I adored going on those musical journeys with Mojo.

Mojo had an incredible knack for making his listeners "feel" like they were the most incredible, wonderful, extraordinary, people that ever existed!

Every night before I went to sleep, I would hear Mojo say the quote that's in my signature. Whenever things got tough in my life, I could always hear Mojo saying that to me, and I knew I could hang on because: There's nobody bad like me!!

Then of course he'd play some kick ass Prince, Parliment, B 52's or somebody to nail the point home!!

Mojo, I just wanted to say thank you, for being you, and for making me believe that it was alright to be me!!

the way radio has turned into a monopoly by just a couple large corporations and the tight reign they have on programing, Do you think there is a chance for your style of radio to be allowed on the airwaves. I look at the direction that some musicians have taken to cut out the large corporations - Like Ani Difranco and later Prince - could this happen with radio? maybe with creative minds and local ownership? will it happen?

You caught my attention when you first hit JLB (I think) with those T.V. commercials showing your silhouette in front of a smokey (just landed) UFO - and the anouncement "The Mothership Has Landed". You didn't show your face then and since - but, I could never mistake the sound of your voice.
So many shows I remember... I never listen to the radio anymore - You've spoiled me and raised the bar on what I expect from radio. Your connection with your audience and your ability to play so many diverse things (even classical) - I do miss you're work here in Detroit.

Although I don't remember the M.F.A. for either being too young or what (I was born in '82) but I definetely remember the voice. I became a loyal listener of his show in the early-mid-90's when he was one 92.3 - before it became Mix92.3 and when he wa on WGPR and 105.9 in '97-'98. He is a BIG inspiration for me getting into radio broadcasting not just for the diversity of music he played but for the love of the city of Detroit and us. Me and my sister use to race to our phones every time he did "Star Wars" with Prince vs. Rick James -the all time classic battles!!! If it wasn't for him, I probably would have never:

Bought so many Prince CD's
Dig thru my uncle's and aunt's record collection for '70's funk joints.
Ate at Mr. Fofo's ( y'all remember those commercials)
Trek out to Tonya's Music on Gratiot & Harper

and fianlly...Appreciate music ( and good music at that!)
