Like I said before, this is the one album that I can listen to over and over and over again, and still be inspired. To me, this is the true essence of what Prince is and is about. If someone who has never heard of Prince wanted to know who he was, then I'd refer them to this album.

When I think of Prince, I think of Purple Rain, and how this album inspired me as a child. Purple Rain basically won me over. It made me the true fan that I am today. And it's so radical and so out there, that I'm still trying to figure it out. It's just that amazing. big grin

'1999'

It was the album that inspired me most to make music. It was the soundtrack to a very exciting time in my life. And it completely rewrote the rules of popular black music at that time. I haven't listened to anything quite the same way since.

I used to listen to SOTT a lot in high school but Purple Rain was always my favourite. Then after college years, hangovers, self doubt, failed relationships and a whole bunch of other stuff, i found SOTT to be my comfort and joy. Something about the sparse production, songs laid bare, Prince's seemingly insular mood through lots (but not all) of it, it just clicked for me.
The way the mood leaps from Housequake to Dorothy, the dark brood of It, the obsession of If I Was..., the lyrics to Strange Relationship, the way it starts with Sign and ends with The Cross. By miles, i think, Prince's best and most artistically free album. Closely followed by 1999, for similar reasons.

I fell in love with many of the songs on this album the first time I heard them(ie: Gold,Shhh, eye Hate U,Dolphin,The Most Beautiful Girl in the World), which is unusual, because I usually only like 1 or 2 songs per album. This album has so many emotions(which are excellently expressed by the segues), and the instrumentals and the vocals are absolutely tremendous.Definitely Prince's best, and most underrated album.

Because "Parade" is more intellectual, sophisticated and stylish than his other releases, and I like to associate myself with the record that is the most intellectual, sophisticated and stylish. Because that's how I am also in real life. I like my art to reflect me.

Purple Rain was an all time favorite of mine but Sign o the Times really stuck out 2 me because i remember it came out when i was about 3 and i used to dance 2 housequake and hot thing but it wasn't until i was n high school that i understood the political message of the title track, the appreciation of your significant other(if i was your girlfriend,adore,4ever in my life, slow love etc) it made me bigger fan of the man and his music
all my friends call me prince all the women call me electric man cause baby when i plug into your socket i charge u like nobody can

Most definitely Purple Rain.
I was 14 when Purple rain was relased and totally fell in love with Prince. I watched the movie over and over and listened to the album over and over. That was also my transition from junior high school to high school, a very emotional time for me, a time that increased my responsibility for a multitude of areas in my life. I look back at that time and think that "God, I thought things were hard then??"
