Janet Jackson and Prince

Hey Guys! I know....it's been a while since I have been on. Anyway, I was listening to "Party Man" today and I could not help but think that this song was the prototype of for the Janet Jackson songs, "Control" and "What have you done for me lately". If you listen to the piano fills in partyman, they sound very similar to the ones in the JJ songs.

Do you think that Prince had something to do with her songs, in some way?

Thanks,

Later.

The only relation I can see it having with Prince is "Control" being recorded in Minneapolis by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Other than that, I'm not sure...

I actually heard somewhere, probably around here, that Prince actually wrote, "What have you done for me lately." I don't know how true that is, but hey anythings possible, we are talking about Prince.

You're right, but I seem to rememeber him playing a concert some years back and the band started playing "what have you done for me lately" and he shouted, "Who wrote that" and smiled.

yeah, but i think his joke in that statement was that he was peeved that the band was playing something by jam & lewis, and not a prince tune...it was kind of a backhanded compliment/tribute to jimmy & terry. that's how i interpreted it, anyway.

Exactly. I think it was a Lovesexy show too, right?

It's the same thing with Prince and TLC's Waterfalls, dunno why people think he wrote that confused

I doubt it. Prince is not one to let somebody else take his songwriting credits. I think Prince and Janet have ever collaborated in any way. I have heard Janet speak her admiration of Prince, but not the other way around, except for that little comment he made when the interviewer said: Michael Jackson: Prince: Genius, Janet Jackson: Genius sister. I think that pretty much said it on his part.

I think JJ was very heavilly influenced by Prince in the early years of her career. I recall watching a documentary where it was said that Joe Jackson's reaction to his daughter working with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was not good. JJ wanted to go for the "Minneapolis sound" but Joe was not impressed that his daughter "would sound like Prince!"
