1999, Purple Rain and Sign O'the Times are the worst albums by Prince and the worst albums in the 80's period. Batman was his all-time best(Arms of Orion;gotta love it!!!)

STOP, I say.

Now, back to your regular broadcast.....

I would have to give this title to LOVESEXY. The "1-track" thing killed it for me... and then, the album is not his most cohesive. Dance On? Please. My favorite from this album is Glam Slam, and u see how far that got him. I'm with everyone else, I love em all, but LOVESEXY is the worst of the 80's.

no. i didnt say BATMAN, i said LOVESEXY

Co-sign. Batman had at least "lemon crush" and "scandalous"

Lovesexy had a provocative cover and "anastesia".

It just seems like such a sad album... Sad in the sense of tragically sad.

Or maybe that's just me.

i'm afraid i'm one of these blinkered people who believes he did no wrong in the 80s.
i see the albums as a complete body of work, and each album wouldn't exist without the other. it's for that reason i couldn't really pick a best or worst. that whole catalogue is the most colourful music i've ever heard. it's all good.
btw-i'm stunned at the amount of people including Batman. i was in a record store when they played Batdance, and the volume of the guitar solo had people stopped in their tracks.

Batman is easily his worst. An uninspired collection of throw away fluff.[/color]

I disagree. It has some filler like "Trust," "Lemon Crush" and "The Arms of Orion (possibly the worst Prince song ever released)." But it's stripped down and has some impressive moments. "The Future" and "Electric Chair" stand up over time. "Partyman" has a funky lil' groove that's on par with most if not all of his 90's party jams. "Vicki Waiting" is a sublime treat, and tell me "Scandalous" ain't a vintage Prince slow jam! Even the novelty track "Batdance" is interesting enough, with a funky guitar riff towards the end.

Compared to the rest of his 80's stuff, it isn't as good. But on its own merits, it's no classic, but it ain't bad.

Batdance, in particular, mark the very first time that Prince ever use a keyboard sampler. Imagine that: Prince sampling himself & dialogs from the Batman film.

Timeless!!! cool

Didnt you state in the earlier post that u loved PARADE? thats all we were saying... we were shakin off the PARADE haters, and showing that BATMAN wasnt THATTT BAD. maybe u dont agree that Lovesexy was worse ....but hey, i guess to each is own... You gotta admit that "1 track" thing may have pissed u off a bit.

I think "worst" is a poor choice of words, cuz they are all good (well maybe except Batman!). The thread is reallly turning into more about 'least favorite'.

Personally, I dont' think I've listened to Batman or Lovesexy since the 80s, like when I first bought them.

I was still excited when LS came out, but I was so dissapointed in Batman. Batdance is still cool, but the rest of the album is just so boring and blah.

And it's SHOCKING that Prince said what he did about Parade, and then released Batman. That music was definitely not ready.

It seems as though the people who hate on Parade just don't appreciate music that isn't funk. Parade's brilliance is how he mixes all styles and makes them all funky. Plus it's a concept album.

I agree with whoever said Lovesexy or Batman really marked hte beginning of the end. Lovesexy was like an indulgence to his religious thing, but then Batman was just flat.

Dirty Mind gets my vote with Batman a close second. I do like these albums though.

With Dirty Mind Prince wanted to go beyond the trendy pop audience of "I Wanna Be Your Lover". Prince wanted to develop a loyal following. The rough sound and explict lyrics are true to life. Prince said "I realised that I could write just what was on my mind and I didnt have to hide enything." Prince answered the gay issue in Uptown with a firm "No, are you." Dirty Mind, Head, Sister and Partyup are great songs. The album is very liberating and free.

I understand the importance of Dirty Mind in the progression of Prince's artistic growth. I'm looking at each album in terms of its individual merits outside of that context. Of the 80's albums Dirty Mind is the least interesting/enjoyable to me. Like somebody said though, the use of the word "worse" is a poor choice because I like all of the 80's albums. "Least favorite" would be better.
