Prince has covered several Elvis songs and I remember one time at a Paisley Park party Prince said, "Tonight we're going to honor the King...and I don't mean Martin Luther" and then he went into "Teddy Bear".

Yes, and he´s also performed Jailhouse Rock in 1993 and several other times, gave him props during his concerts and I vaguely recall seeing some Elvis books at Paisley Park ( Celebration 02).
Maybe it´s because Elvis is or was a prime example how the industry exploited and destroyed a legend...kind of like the opposite of Prince.
But saying he hates Elvis isn´t fair, it´s close to slander.I don´t think he HATES Elvis.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

But to say FaceDown, DeadLikeElvis?
I just don't see how that's funny.

Its not supposed to be funny. Its just an analogy. It fits with the rythmn, it flows off the tongue... He could have used any dead person I suppose, but in keeping with the rock n roll theme, the music theme, he chose elvis... I suppose he could have said

'dead like...
... Joplin
... Hendrix
... Moon
... Lennon
... Liberache' etc etc...

But dead like Elvis fits well... He was the king, he was a HUGE star and now he is, in fact, dead...

Anyway, I think that bit is a sample...

This is a great topic for discussion.
I don't know why people see it this way. Elvis loved the blues. Rock n roll was in his blood. He always acknowledged the fact that he learned music from the Black folks in Mississippi who sat on their porches and played. Elvis never tried to steal or pretend that he invented that kind of music.
He just happened to be white.

-----
Then why did Elvis say the "only thing a black man can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes."

Redd Foxx who was good friends with Elvis said that Elvis admitted saying this but, explained that he had grown-up and changed his views. Which is fine and dandy but, it is not going to win him any awards around black folks.

I was just watching that DVD and he didn't make fun of James Brown he gave him respect. Now he did make fun of Ozzie Osbourne. I think that is what you are referring too.

And I'm not asking why YOU hate on Elvis (if you do). I'm asking what Prince has against him. He has trashed him a couple songs....Face Down, Rock n Roll is Alive. On the Musicology tour he began the chords of Jailhouse Rock and then stopped and said "You have to be the Prince before you can be the King."
What's the deal?

Prince isn't trashing Elvis in Face Down - he's trashing the industry in the way they treated Elvis and the way they were treating him.

I always took the line "You have to be a Prince before you can be King" (which comes from My Name is Prince, as a shot at Michael Jackson.

That's just wrong. I'm not a virgin, woman, or homosexual and I think Elvis was a great entertainer, great personality, and I love his early records.

And people did love him as a fat man too.

Um,, whether public enemy are fools or not, Elvis WAS a racist, but not as much as John Wayne. He was also very sexist.

But non of that takes away from his talents . I don't have to like the man to appreciate his music. I seriously doubt prince hates Elvis. He wouldn't dare play live covers of elvis if he hated him.

Actually its not bullshit at all and Public Enemy are not fools. Elvis is quoted as saying the only things a black man can do for him is "buy my records and shine my shoes." Now I don't know what your definition for a racist statement is but this is one such statement.

It seemed pretty obvious that Prince's in the round acoustic part of the concert showed an awarness of another royal's comeback concert.

He looked like Elvis in that white polka dot getup, & in the LA concert he wore black like Elvis did in the acoustic part of his comeback concert.

And, of course, he sang that bit of Jailhouse Rock.

Though, no doubt, Prince thinks of himself as far more talented!

That quote has been disputed also. There hasn't been solid proof that he said that, but I believe he did since he also didn't want black musicians to play in his band, His justification was that a lot of black musicians can't read music.

um, neither could he. But the topic was whether prince hates him, I seriously doubt he does.

To each his own but Elvis is in the history of american music for good reason, his impact was second to none. Nobody is going to repeat his victory anytime soon. You are free to your opinion though.

Actually, the story of Elvis saying this are impossible to confirm or deny, I read in "Last Train to Memphis" that this statement was reputedly overheard by a black bellhop in Boston, forgetting the fact that Elvis never actually went to Boston. I put it in with the urban myth category. Black folks want to think that shit and it has kept the thing alive. Chuck D admitted in his bio that Elvis was one of the greatest entertainers ever and was only taking a shot at the cult of Elvis. Truth is, if you want to dislike Elvis he had plenty of shortcomings as we all do, I doubt racism was one of them. In fact, his achievement was (along with all the early rockers) a forunner of the races coming closer together. Stories abound about him wandering the streats of memphis, playing black clubs and even driving the black girls crazy, they say he had a lot of fun on that side of town. As BB King says, "when they called him the king they didn't make a mistake."

I am a HUGE lover of both P and E.
I am loving this, that there may be evidence out there of Prince's affinity for the King.
Can you think of anymore?

To start with, I think the reason people never put them in the same breath is because, people are not looking for Prince to copy Elvis, it seems kind of unlikely, however, Prince has always been very eclectic and has stolen from everyone. He's the best historian of american music and dance that you will find. Anyway, if you check Delerious, you will hear a quirky Rockabilly style full of Elvis mannerisms, and even on Jack U Off. The pole he would go down on the 1999 tour was from Jailhouse rock. The black leather suit he wears in Purple Rain is from Elvis' 68 special. Then you go with the moves, During his concert versions of let's go crazy, he looks a lot like Elvis in his early tv appearances. If you watch his Prince and The Revolution Live, you will see a few brief vintage Elvis moves, (and even Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard during the piano segue.) The fact is Elvis is and will always be the archetype of the rocker, mysterious, lonely, brooding, inarticulate, natively talented. As I watched Prince this summer as he was leaving the stage, he again did a variation of Elvis' latter stage exits, he would point to the crowd, then point to himself and shake his head and point towards the heavens. It was his version of the same move, Elvis did it half stoned on his last tours, Prince, learning from history, seemed to imply that the ego is a destructive thing and he learned some of this from the king.

How is "You have to become a Prince before your King anyway" meant to be a refernce to MJ. I never got that confused . Is it because MJ started calling himself the King of Pop at that time??

That goes back to My Name is Prince, where he & Tony make the king comments, and (in my opinion) Prince mocks MJ "I ain't saying I'm better, whoo! no better than you, huh!" and lots more "dah's" and "uh's."

A lot of black people (and white people I suppose) are angry because Elvis took a style of music that was predominantly black and cashed in big time. I personally don't look at it that way because everyone borrows ideas from everyone when it comes to music.
