SEVEN - WHY THE HELL ISN'T IT CONSIDERED A CLASSIC

.

I know some of you don't think it is, but I love that song.

I will even venture to say that I think it's a prince classic.
To me, "Prince Classic" has a few elements:

1) It stands out from the rest of his catalogue
2) It's easily recognizable as Prince
3) It has pop appeal
4) It sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first released

7 satisfies all of these dayum requirements.
Look, Mayte might have been just another one of Prince's cheap, under-the-legal-age-of-consent hussies, but the bitch inspired him to write some pretty damned good music. And no matter what you have to say about D&P or prince, those albums had some real gems on them. 7 is one of them.

i never really liked this song much tho it has some cool sounds and interesting lyrics -- i think it's the looped beat (a sample, by the way) that turns me off

The way the song begins to build on itself was what gravitated me to the some. At first listen, I almost skipped the track, but when the bassline came in, I was like "Hold up, lemme see about this."

It's a Prince anthem, but more higher than "Thieves In The Temple" than say "Raspberry Beret" - All Subjective I guess...

Out of the whole symbol album, I'd say the real underrated Prince joint is "Three Chains Of Gold"

I love the video to 7. Yes, I agree when Mayte was with Prince she inspired him to put out good music. I was just listening to Crystal Ball cd listening to She Gave Her Angels, and instantly I had flashbacks of Mayte when she used to preform with him that song is such a sweet touching song.

Not my favorite (but by no means bad either). I remember when it came out it did seem a little too eager to be a hit, with that drum beat that sounded similar to a lot of other artists at the time. Also, the lyrics were just silly and inscrutable (to me at least). I would love it if someone could explaing what he's going on about. We will elminate the 7 deadly sins? Um, ok.

7
is possibly one of his most complicated songs, despite it’s often simple poppy aesthetics. It’s about the seven symptoms of exposure to dihydrogen monoxide. At the time, Prince was starting to believe that Warner Bros. was placing dihydrogen monoxide in Paisley Park’s drinking fountains and at refreshment stands in his concerts.

Dihydrogen Monoxide actually dissolves a substance whose scientific name is too long for me to attempt to spell, but it’s commonly known name is salt peter. Salt peter is used by Nasa (and used to be used in Military Basic Training) to suppress the male sex drive. Prince believed that WB was placing a salt peter/dihydrogen monoxide mixture in his drinking supply thereby suppressing his sex drive. Hence, the lyric : They stand in the way of LOVE, and we will watch them fall…He also mentions the “In the distance, an Army’s marching feat” which is his political nod to the U.S. government saying, “if you won’t subject the military to the substance, then why impose it on innocent civilians like me?”

Possibly the worse symptom of exposure to dihydrogen monoxide is anal leakage. Hence, the
“River of of blood.” Lyric. This is also found in “Melt With U” from the same album, prince (The symbol album), where he says “Don’t look know but there’s a river of blood—U must’ve been a virgin/What am I guilty of?” It’s disguised as a straight up hetereosexual song, but it’s homosexual overtones can be understood when you throw in the dihydrogen monoxide factor.

This obsession actually has not subsided like many of Prince’s various obsession (sex, rap music, buttless yellow power suits), and has actually become more severe after he became a Jehova's Witness. Now he believes that dihydrogen monoxide has been administered to
Jesus during periods of his life, and that because it is a trace compound in trees (the primary source of toilet paper), that it is not safe to use toilet paper, which is why he no longer shakes people’s hands with his right hand.

The song 7 is from the Book of Revelation (in the Bible). Revelation 21:2 The Holy City, new Jerusalem. 21:18 the city was pure gold. 21:21 the streets of the city was pure gold. 22:1 the river water of life. 1:16 In his right hand seven stars. 4:5 there were seven lamps. Watch the 7 video. Look at the Love Symbol CD cover its all from Revelation.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

I agree, it is a classic. It has a great driving beat that just makes you move. I, however, haven't any idea what he is actually talking about. I've just been taking it as an empowerment song telling us that we can rise up against anyone who tries to put us down. Haters will eventually fall.

I would, however, like to know what he meant by it!
Come here, babe.. yeah...
