Prince and his music by other artists - How do you think of them?

We all know Prince has produced tons of artists, written songs for people, given songs to people etc, etc.

Prince is more than a popstar, he's a writer and producer and... well you all know the rest.

I got to thinking: What do we think about the records Prince was involved in?

Although the acts Prince has produced and created haven't always done well, personally, I always include them in my factoring of Prince's career.

I'm a big fan of the protege acts, I probably listen to them more than I do Prince.

I think when you line up all of Prince's work - his official stuff, his unreleased stuff, AND the related artists work - that you can see a coherent thread - a clear evolution of the man's music and sound.

Whilst from one Prince album to the next, the sound might have jumped - if you factor in the related artists releases - you can see how he got from A to C.

I'll give examples:

- Prince / Rebels -> Dirty Mind

or

- PR, ATWIAD, The Family, Romance 1600 -> Parade

///

I regard the records by Vanity 6, The Time, Sheila E, Jill Jones, Madhouse, etc as integral to Prince's sound as I do the records released under his own name(s).

Do you think the same, do they form a linear musical evolution? Or are they just side projects to you?

It's all about JILL JONES, SHEILA E, THE FAMILY and THE TIME (of course). Although Vanity 6 had a hit with Nasty Girl, the 4 artists I mentioned actually had talent.
