CAMILLE Hi,
I know it's probably a very old topic, but what was the tracklisting for the Camille album that went to test-pressing? Plus, are there any other Camille outakes other than Rebirth of the Flesh? I'm having a Camille-fest at the moment. I really love the songs from that era. Green virgin teenager, or filthy rich yuppy. Pussy cat pussy cat, where for out thou puppy

I was asking about the Camille songs recently as well. This info is from prinssi:
***Camille November 5th 1986 Album sequenced: Side 1: 01. Rebirth Of The Flesh 02. Housequake 03. Strange Relationship 04. Feel U Up Side 2: 05. Shockadelica 06. Good Love 07. If I Was Your Girlfreind 08. Rockhard In A Funky Place That's the Camille album, but there are plenty of other songs in which Prince uses his sped-up vocal technique. I have yet to see a comprehensive list of all those songs. Erotic City etc... Z8

The tracklist got posted every couple of days here, so thankfully paisleypark4's thread was made sticky (at the very top) - you can find W.I.P. tracklistings for many projects there, including Camille, which was the final known configuration (config. of that elusive test pressing!)
Versions were same as released: 01. Rebirth Of The Flesh - As circulating minus the "welcome 2 the Crystal Ball ending). 02. Housequake - As SOTT 03. Strange Relationship - As SOTT 04. Feel U Up - Long Stroke Side 2: 05. Shockadelica - Extended 06. Good Love - Bright Lights Big City (CB is an edit) 07. If I Was Your Girlfreind - As SOTT minus the wedding intro (source: Boris) 08. Rockhard In A Funky Place - As TBA // [Edited 10/18/04 12:46pm]

A lot of this list had Camille versions of the songs, wait till you hear the Camillle Housequake. Now I'm older than movies, Now I'm wiser than dreams, And I know who's there

Some songs on Sign O The Times are also attributed to Camille; U Got The Look beside the ones that also were on the Camille album.
But also Scarlet Pussy... And I was thinking... would Camille be an alter ego Prince would wanna use again as a template to create some new music? Or do you think the alter ego days are over?

Which along with the tracks that make up the LP, total the complete officiallly attributed Camille tracks - Erotic City, Love or $, (Eye Like) Funky Music, Crystal Ball, Bob George etc, are just tracks that use altered vocal techniques (just clarifying that in general, not specifically for you Gooey). Indeed the name Camille was just invented for a certain project, not specifically for any song using the technique. Yeah sure, you're right of course, but what are we supposed to call that technique? Isn't "the Camille voice" kind of the obvious way to describe it? Also, does anyone know exactly how many songs use that technique? I thought it was just a few, but there seem to be more than I was aware of. Z8

On the Lovesexy tour, during "Bob George", Prince says his name is "Camille" - so I guess we could say that is a Camille track.
Wasn't "I Like Funky Music" attributed to Camille? I may be wrong. Dammit, I wish he would write an autobiography and tell us the whole story behind that stuff.

Well apart from on 1999, I think the first time we really hear it is on Erotic City, and Prince has said in the past that that was inspired by George Clinton (did he record it after seeing him live? I forget on that point).
Any way, the speeded up/down vocal thing was all over Parliament/Funkadelic records, so I guess that's where Prince picked it up from. As for the character, well the songs represented show Prince in a party mood, a naughty mood - the practical joker, the kinky side, but also the vulnerable side - this is Prince at his most androgynous. And I guess that's what it's all about, Prince playing with that theme of cultural gender roles, and twisting them, turning them on their head, and just plain bending them (gender bender ) - Just as he had done previously with his visual image, clothes and lyrics. The whole thing about Hercule Barbin (the 19th century hermaphrodite), I dunno that was brought up once, in the mid-90s in an interview, and Prince didn't expound very much other than to congratulate the questioner on his friends moxy - So I wouldn't say Camille was inspired by Hercule Barbin, just that Hercule was a hermaphrodite, and that Camille is also androgynous (yet clearly male). Whatever Camille is, he's one of the most damn interesting and quality parts of Prince's entire recording career, to me, at least // [Edited 10/19/04 10:39am]
