It's "funk". They played that song on the radio numerous times years back, and it would have never slid by if he said "fuck".

I know, but I wouldn't call that "proof." The radio DJs and such are not that "withit" to pick up on that.

I'm sure I heard other songs with curses splip by, too.

DTT-Lyrics lists it as f*ck, and it makes more sense given the song.

I remember hearing it on the radio back in the day, as is. I heard it last week in a mix show and the DJ turned the volume down every time the word was said. I heard it in another mix show and every time the word was said, they played it backwards.

I think it says "funk" but I think Prince said it in a way to make you wonder. That's probably why he never cleared it up.
Andy is a four letter word.

regardless of what we say, it was purposely done in a way that would confuse people. i think it is "fuck". i have always played this song a lot since it was released, and i swear with each listen it sounds like sheila changes up from "fuck" to "funk" and back again on different verses. to me, that is just one example of how dope prince is to have known people would always be asking that question.

i think prince kinda shows his hand though by refusing to play it nowadays. if it wasn't "fuck", he would probably feel more comfortable to just pull a dmsr and change the lyrics up a bit.

It's fuck. Whenever they play it in MPLS/St. Paul "fuck" is bleeped or played backwards.

I have the same question about "My Name is Prince". I only had a cassette of that album, and I've lost the sleeve with the words boxed Does he say, "I did not come to f around" or "funk around"??

in 1984 when this single was playing on the radio, they must have had an edit that never touched on when prince says "Fuck", I remember how shocked me and my friends were when we listened to the 12" and prince is clearly saying "fuck".... although sheila might be saying "funk". I don't have this on tape... but I know we didn't here the word "fuck" on the radio....

If someone has the 45 b-side, play it and tell us if it is the radio edited version....

i've always thought it was "fuck". adore gets airplay and the word "fuck" is in there. "they know this is serious, i ain't fuckin' just for kicks..." has never been edited out of radio airplay. you can't go by what the programmers miss.

I had this same debate with a local DJ.He swore up and down that the lyric was "We can funk...",insisting that radio stations would never play the song if they were really saying "we can fuck"...lol...where can we find the official lyrics for this song?

Clearly 'fuck' although I agree that it's sounds as if Sheila variates it throughout the song.

nod

My though exactly. They're both saying "fuck" as well as "funk" throughout
the song. And that makes it a hell of a lot harde to say which one it is,
since it's both.

does anyone have the radio edit non-fuck version that was played on the radio back when this song was put out as a b-side? Was there such a thing? There had to be, or why would we have been surprised by the 12" back then.

Depends what version you have
if you have the edited version its Funk, because it was recorded for radio play
an un-edited version says F*ck
i noticed that he made a radio version whilst listening to a version my little brother played when he was 10
I was shocked my mother let him listen to it when i noticed that the word f*ck was traded in for Funk
Me beinga p, fan was flabbergasted especially since i have that single!

there is a difference between what is being said and what is meant. Prince has made a career out of insinuations. it's his ability to be able to say something without actually saying it that made Prince brilliant. Think about it! hmmm

Prince has always been the master of subtext. for every blunt assertion like "I seriously want to fuck the taste out of your mouth," we get ten brilliant analogies and subtexts like Little Red Corvette, baby you're much too fast. he doesn't say it outright, but we all know what this means. same with funk.

I don't know what country you live in, but the song continues to get play on the air here in the US, where dj's don't regulate obscenities on the airwaves, the FCC does. this song would not continue to be played if it was fuck. just wouldn't. and never would have. common sense, and Prince's own affinity for creatively being dirty without outright saying what he means, is proof enough for me that it is funk.

sure it does. funk may not mean fuck by itself, but within the lyric it is obvious what meaning it has taken on. creative people find creative ways to say things. only boring and uncreative people need to say or be told things in their simplest and most blatant terms.

I live in the US..... no need to get attitude....

And obviously the FCC regulates.... but the DJs are the ones who de facto have to do things based on these regulations.

Anyway, my point was just that there are times that when DJs unknowingly play something that has a curse in it....and the FCC doesn't know about it unless enough people get annoyed to complain.

As someone pointed, Adore has been played on air and it clearly has the F word in it, well "clearly" to people who really know the song..... the casual listener might not pay close enough attention.

Anyway, I agree that they are either mixing it up within the song or being deliberately vague.
