XXAXX, eye c ur point of view but it is FUNDAMENTALLY flawed n the assumption that u pertain 2 no what Prince's bliefs r. U DON'T...

N spite of u NOT knowing, u have been projecting an entirely NEGATIVE outlook on what these bliefs MAY b based on ur preCONceived notion of what a JW is "xpected" 2 blieve.

Furthermore, ur PREJUDICE is guiding how u seek evidence 2 support what u INcorrectly claim. This has MORE 2 do with UR own hang-ups, and less 2 do with Prince's.

Eye rest my case.

anji, first look up the word 'pertain' ok? yer makin me giggle

interestingly enough, you're all over me on this thread because i'm daring to mention my point of view regarding the video.

seeing as how personally you're taking this i checked your profile.

PHEW!!!! how is it you defend prince here, yet had the trasteless nerve to start a thread about "prince cheating on mani during the tour"? ummmm how can you even talk about projecting with a straight face lol lol

sorry but from now on i'm dismissing you as a spittle-spewing lunatic

XXAXX, eye'm making it clear that eye blieve ur viewpoints r prejudiced due 2 ur stance on Prince's religion. It is this prejudice that shapes how u view his work, looking 4 any and every criticism.

Eye don't care 4 ur views about this video, or that song. It all amounts 2 the same thing...

4 a reminder of ur IRRATIONAL ways, c ur accusation of Prince being a RACIST due 2 the nature of the song, ILLUSION, COMA, PIMP & CIRCUMSTANCE.

damn. i have to actually admit you have a point. hate when that happens. it's true i'm ticked off at prince and have been for a while now, but not for the reasons you list. i truly don't 'seethe with anger' because of his Conversion (as you put it) or hate prince's religious leanings, but to be honest i have been chuffed with prince for a while now.

when i thought about your words (yeah i know i said i wouldn't but then i got to thinking on them anyway) i realized my annoyance has affected my point of view.

i disliked the way he dissed beyonce after the awards by publicly spelling it out he had to teach her a few scales, the way he's dissed current musical trends with his (imo) arrogant definition of 'real' music in terms of live performance (coming from mr i'll play it all myself, electronically even) the way he forced the sale of musicology at the expense of his fans in terms of inclusion of the album into the ticket price with no opt-out clause, his crusade against major labels then his capitulation to them for rave and musicology, the name change back again (and let's not even talk about the messages in TRC or The Moors). it's all affected my perspective on him/his work. so i have to admit i do tend to be more critical than in years past.

i still think i have a point, but you're right too. the video is nice to watch, it's entertaining, thought-provoking in a basic way, and i'm glad the world is receiving the video so enthusiastically. i'm glad he's doing well this year and is happy. which is what actually counts, right?

sorry anji. i'll try to check myself before launching into another critical diatribe against a guy who once greatly inspired me

Color doesn't have anything to do with the attack, but it did play a role in how certain people were percieved after 9/11.

Case in point, I have a friend who was called all kinds of things because she "looked like a terrorist". Never mind that she's Indian. Idiots still made assumptions about her based on her appearance.

Right, just like color plays a role in the way everyone is perceived in this country. I've had numerous friends/girlfriends of various faiths, and ethnicities from different parts of the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa. Their ethnic/national origin, religious beliefs, cultures, outlooks and perspectives are completely different. However, in America they are all clumped in the same category because many of them posses a particular skin color or 'look" only associated with Muslims. We fail to realize that the intra-ethnic variation is often as great as the inter-ethnic variation (Iraq is a prime example). I will speak specifically to Islam...Islam is like Christianity with various sects, similar to our Christian denominations, and like our denominations they have different belief systems. Moreover, we don't consider that the broad labels we use describe a large and diverse group of people from different countries and faiths. Furthermore, many of the countries we recognize as Muslim have Islam as the dominant religion; however, there are citizens in those societies that are not Muslims. Just like everyone in the U.S. is not Christian.

Prince's song makes an excellent point because it addresses our fallacious labelling system and how widespread generalizations are used to identify particular groups of people as sharing the same views/beliefs/character traits (With the U.S. labelling theoies, the late Freddie Mercury would have been a "possible" terrorist simply because he was Persian). Unfortuantely, most people do not realize that these individuals have a wide range of differences, perspectives, and experiences just like everyone else. Everything is not simply either or!!

Another example is an article in the USA Today a few days ago about a car bombing conducted by the Israeli government. .

There is a HUGE difference between a military (i.e. government) action that is directly targeting KNOWN terrorists who have already committed atrocious crimes (i.e Hamas and other Palistinian terrorist leaders) and suicide bombers who randomly blow themselves up and kill innocent people.

To even compare the two is way beyond ignorant.

SO how should the video have ended. SHe gets jumped by some rednecks on her way to a mosque and they beat the shit out her. she is left in a pool of blood maybe dead maybe not clutching her favorite baseball card of her favorite all american sports man. very strong yet simple imagery that would prove a real point.

Are you serious, or are you high? (now i gots 2 cuss) HOW IN THE FUCK DOES THAT PROVE ANY KIND OF POINT? Sure, let's beat her down, because she is brownish. That'll teach the bitch 2 live in OUR country. Forgive my reallity keeping, but doesn't that count as terrorism(and before say anything, please look that word up in the dictionary)? Where in the song does Prince say anything ill-willed toward our middle eastern brothers, and sisters, all being terrorists? ( accused of this crime) Be cinnamon girl from kuwait, or india, even egypt, she was labeled a killer, because of her skin tone.

Oh yeah, and if u were listening, at the end of the song, Prince says, and i quote for thee
"Don't worry baby, it's gonna be alright", thus giving the child a glimpse of hope.

Do U still want to beat her down, because she is brownish?

Now, u have my permission 2 hate me

I don't think this is an example of "Prince making everything a race issue".
The fact of the matter is that everyone with a heart shed a tear for the victims of 9/11. Very few people were standing up for the Americans who faced prejudice afterwards. That's all Prince is doing here. It's very sad that they had to make a commercial with all those people of different races saying "I'm an American". Apparently, some folks needed to be reminded.

yeah i understand that sucks. i'm sorry cat stevens was denied entry because of a misspelling of his name

Just to clarify,Yusuf Islam was not denied entry because of the misspelling. A few months ago when he came to the U.S. he was *allowed* entry because of the misspelling. The next time he came, they found him on the no-fly list. That was not a mistake. The government thinks he funded a charity that is really a front for Hamas. (This could be true, but knowing Yusuf Islam's character and personally listening to his new Islamic music I'd say he may have done it without knowing that fact. This man is the Mr. Rogers of the Islamic world and this is a big mistake.)

Coupled with Tariq Ramadan being denied entry to the US, I think they are starting to target Muslims who are actually building bridges.

YOU COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT ANY BETTER! HOORAY! THANK YOU!
As a person living in the Middle East and being half european half middle eastern, I think what you are pointing out is something everyone should think about and consider. But well, the world is not what we always think it is or want it to be.....

just add a little about princes views on other peoples religions, its always confused me cos first i heard about all the jehova stuff, then im sure on ONA Live Cd he talks about celebrating peopls similarities in religion and life and not the differences. that sounds pretty tolerant to me? and this was during the height of his preaching! confused

obviously, nep, i mourn them both. the remark you quoted out of context had to do with a prior discussion about the video.

Look people it's just a music video.

I'm not so sure there is a meaning behind it, it's not even a story!
And if there is, its message could be perceived as contrived and confusing.

Just my two cents;
