You left off "soul." Prince is best when there is some soul somewhere in the mix. Even a quitar-driven rock song like "Computer Blue" has soul. TRC has soul, and Sign O' The Times is chock full of it.

Soul.

Definetly the Ballads. There is nothing like putting a nice slow PRINCE ballad while having some hot sex. It just makes the experience even better!!!!!

I love when he blends jazz with funk, like on the extended version of Billy Jack Bitch.
But I love it when he writes some cool arrangements and explores the bandwork, like the crescendo on ´I hate U´ and ´Shhh´...I love when he concentrates on more raw acoustic stuff, like ´She spoke 2 me´, ´5 women´ and ´When thelights go down´....dont get me wrong, his work in the 80s was fantastic, but now I dont think Prince and electronic stuff match anymore....

Blues and any song with him tearing up that guitar. Damn, that man can wail!! His guitar playing really gets to me.
I love the way he plays on Zannalee. I also lovvve his style on We Can Funk, Joy in Repetition and It. Yeah know, I can just keep going on and on and on.....

F U N K - all day long.
for some fine examples of Princes brand of untouchable funk I would choose the following, although Im obviously missing one or two (Im doing this from memory and Im still hungover from the customary UK Easter Bank Holiday piss up!):

Days Of Wild
Make Your Mama Happy
Daisy Chain
DMSR
Erotic City
Lets Work
Now
Last Heart
Family Name
Man In A Uniform
Sexy Dancer
Head
Emancipation
Crystal Ball
Irresistable Bitch
Lady Cab Driver

That could just be one the funkiest 16 track compilations ever, by any artist - & would probably fit on one disc too!
The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

I love anything that involves Prince working the guitar. To many to mention. That can be rock funk blues. Does Prince simply do one or the other! He's a man of fusion.
God Bless. smile

ROCK

"funk" (which I've never liked) for a black artist is soo cliche. Rock is more kinetic and expressive. The first song I was really struck by was Little Red Corvette because it contrasted so much with the monotony on WGCI (a Chicago R&B station).

When LRC came out on the radio my brother and I were really young and not culturally diverse. We only listened to R&B. We were secretly digging the song, but not saying it because it sounded "white" or some stupid label like that.

Then one day I confessed I liked it and he did too. For us it shattered stereotypes. That started my immersion into a variety of different sounds.

Now, to hear him chasing R&B or funk sounds is so boring -- which is one reason why I'm not joining the music club again or going to anymore concerts. (Well that and the fact appropriating religion and the Bible for music is pretty cliche and unimaginative too. How about conceiving the Musical Divine in a new way instead of copping preached concepts I can read about in Watchtower. Now Lovesexy .... can't find those concepts anywhere, pure originality. I miss that.)

why the hell am i the first to say Rock on this thread. How the hell can funk be so popular. Gag me with sly stone's shoe.

Slamming Funk Rock! a lot of the stuff around the gold era was great: Now, Billy Jack Bitch, Hide the Bone, i also liked Push of D&P and off course Gett Off. earlier stuff? that would be 'lets pretend we're married', 'baby i'm a star', 'tambourine', 'shockadelica', 'irrisistable bitch', 'superfunkycalifragisexy', 'erotic city', i could go on and on!
