Really the article says it all and there isn't much left for us to comment on. Having said that I'll risk saying something(!): I think the word comeback is being bandied around a little too much. If you substitute the word recognition, then for me it hits the mark, and that's what certainly seemed to be happening at the Grammys. Prince receiving a SO from his peers.Everyone talking about that being the high spot of the Grammys. Prince being recognised for who he is, for his contribution to music. That's what the article expresses so clearly

Prince is the Musical God!
Their is no `ARTIST` on this planet that can ever come close to PRINCE`s Genius as a Musician, PRINCE is first an `Artist`, not a Salesman, or Marketing Genius...Micheal is for the KIDS!

Any man that can play more than a few dozen instruments, writes, produces for various other artists like: Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, George Clinton, Pattie Labelle, Celine Dion, Madonna, TLC, No doubt, Beyonce, and countless others...is pure and sheer GENIUS!

Micheal is great, he dances, and sells 40 million records in 1984, doesnt make him The King Of Pop-ular Music...Most of Mike`s hits were written by others...he`s was marketed as a full on entertainer, who has the dance moves of James Brown and the charater of Elvis Presley...just the influence of both won the world over...but PRINCE is James, Jimi, Richard, and Mozart rolled into 1!!!

Prince`s has recorded over 25 albums in 26 years...with some of the most amazing lyrics and Instrumentation on a song...Prince has crossed all boundaries in Rock and Soul Music...brought the worlds of FUNK, Classical and Gospel together and gave us something fresh, exciting, and daring everytime, both on record and stage and whether `we` loved of hated it...PRINCE still stood for what he believed in...and that was HIS MUSIC!!!

No one can ever defeat PRINCE as an all around TRUE ARTIST and MUSICAL GENIUS!!!

I`m sorry, but MICHEAL HE GOT YOU BEAT!!!
and The 2004 Grammy Opener, was just a rehearsal, for whats about to come for the next 20 years of PRINCE.

Where will Micheal be?

Bravo. Great Speech.

The thing is most die-hard Prince fans aren't knowledgeable when it comes to MJ. I see the 'most of Michaels hits were wrote by others' comments and i piss myself laughing. Check your history, Michael was writing classics way back when he was with the Jacksons. Infact most of Mike's best songs are the ones he has penned himself.

As for Michael not changing his act in 20years, well to the world at large, Prince vanished 10 years ago. What was he doing the other night? a comeback with a Purple Rain medley, those people neither know or care about the work Prince has put in the last 10 years or so.

Some would say that was tired, lame and boring and not particularly artistic or inspiring. Not me though. I love a bit of nostalgia sometimes. It was exciting, same as MJ's suitcase containing the fedora, sparkly jacket and white glove gets people freaking.

I sort of agree. MJ has written melodies and lyrics 4 his songs. But, he hasn't arranged every single freakin' instrument on almost every single 1 of his works!

Well I think you know what you can do with your two cents.
Mike has written a few songs. Prince has written thousands and he never wrote anything as awful as "BAD" and he did not disappear for a decade he was signed to two different record labels, toured, put out records during the last decade.

You and i both know that, Tell a non-fan not me!! i've been along for the journey as a fan for the last twenty years. you got me wrong, i wasn't dissing Prince. It's a fact the majority of the public (not Prince's Fans!!) think he disappeared after TMBGITW.

BTW, Prince has written just over a thousand songs, and i dare say he has wrote plenty that are far worse than 'Bad', But i'll agree with you 'Bad' is complete rubbish.

That's all i'm saying.

big grin

MJ was a good entertainer and had a great voice. When it comes to writing songs and playing music he's not even in the same league as Prince and I'm sure he'd be the first to admit that. Hell, have you ever seen him on stage playing instruments with any proficiency or at all for that matter? No.

I can honestly say that I have never been challenged by an MJ song. He's had a lot of good ones that I enjoy but nothing transcendant. That's what separates the greats like Jimi, Dylan, Prince, Stevie, and Ani Difranco wink from talented entertainers like MJ, Marvin, Madonna, Elvis, etc.

"THEY ARE 2 GREATS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT. Oh, and what's with this "self proclaimed" crap?? When and where did MJ say himself that he is "king of pop"???...what a load of media BS...i think it's his fans that gave him that title"

THANKS Agentmonday!

And it was Diana Ross who first came up with "King of Pop" while announcing him at some show.

Look it up: MJ composed nearly every song himself.
MJ was the first artist ever to come up with a music video that had a story line. (Thriller)
Sooo many artist try to be like him - Justin Timberlake just to name one.
Nobody performs/dances like MJ

Prince has the most amazing voice and he's probably the most talented musician of our time. He has so many beautiful songs, in so many different styles.

But for some reason he just can't get the crowds to go so hysterical like Michael.

Why not look at the similarities: They were both born in 1958, are both black musicians doing crossover music, both weare make up, often similar hair style, both have a feminine side they aren't afraid to show, both (can) have a falsetto voice, both are often misunderstood by the media, etc...

Why do people fight over p and mj - they both rock!!!

This article is very ignorant.

Michael's not a musician? He's solely written and produced some of his most beloved work by himself (and if any of you heard the original demo of Billie Jean - before Q "co-produced" it - you'd hear that it WAS Michael who came up with that killer bass).

My you should check out Johhny Guitar Watson, 1972 "To Bad" before you make that claim. -Mg

Has Michael ever "played" a killer bass line??? Michael has written some good songs, but he always needs the aid of other people to bring his sound and vision to fuition. Earlier on it was Rod Temperton and Quincy who were responsible for his major hits. He's not self-contained and self-reliant like Prince.

No one cares about Prince?...Let Michael spit in the face of the record industry, scrawl slave on his face...then turn around and still get nominated for a grammy (w/no major backing) and get a standing ovation for his performance on a show he hasn't been on in 8 years. Prince gets that respect because he earned it not because he panders to people. Prince is a bad ass hit record or not. People who like Michael live in a fantasy of what Michael use to be in the 70s and 80s. Those days are over. Like a fool Michael believed in his own hype and has been trying to do "another Thriller" for the past 22 years. It's pretty pathetic.

As a die-hard Prince fan, I was also a Jacksons and Michael fan and very knowelegable about the Jacksons. Michael had a lot of Quincy Jones/Rod Temperton and other musicians help to bring his songs to fruition earlier on whether he penned the lyrics or not. His most beautiful song to date "Butterflies" was by Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry and Andre Harris. For those who don't know..Michael didn't invent the moonwalk as "he's claimed". Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar and Soul Train fame invented the move taught it to Michael.

For a time many people liked both of them. But I understand, outside of his face he has not evolved since 1988. Those who still go crazy for him are living in the past with Michael himself. "The media has ruined my career, Tommy Matola ruined my career, peter pan made me do it, "yall wanna see me pop lock again...yadda yadda yadda. Michael sold his soul to the devil and told him to "super size it" He AND his brothers were great. I saw them in 2001..dynamite in their 40s and 50s...he put this nasty blemish on his familys legacy and that is sad and aweful.

Die-hard Prince get "Prince" to an extent. And it's not all based on his past success...he had success long after purple rain. Prince is 100% music. No he's not the most congenial person in the world and he has put out crap, but I speak for myself I like him for what he represents overall...Someone who marches to the beat of his own drum and stands 100% behind everything he does and says. He knows he's a grown up and so do his fans. He does what he does best which is play and perform. And he still manages to get critical acclaim with his music without being on a major label. "The Rainbow Children...Nominated for a grammy for his instrumental album NEWS...I think someone has been paying attention to him over the past 10 years!!

MJ had Liz Taylor come out and call him "king of pop" & at the sametime he put out a press release.

I remember because Howard Stern made fun of it.. and then started calling himself & press released "king of all media"

he said in a few years people would forget that he called himself that too..

I guess "some" forgot MJ did the samething

Thanks prince.org for coming out with this topic. I just wanted to say that I have been a Prince fan since Purple Rain. Since I was 12 and I am so proud of my 'old man" as I like to call him. I used to be a Michael fan and Off the Wall and Thriller will always be my faves, but hands down Prince is the only artist that I haven't been fickle with. As far as people calling Prince weird are concerned, so what, I look at it like this: For years and even today, he has kept people and the media out of his business and told his entourage not to talk either and it has paid off because, everyone on this message board, just imagine if it were not Michael, but Prince that was all over the tabloids and on TV as a pedophile and the whole world watching him over and over again being taking in by police with handcuffs. What if he fucked his face up like Michael did and said it's ok to sleep in bed with 12 year old boys and holding hand with cancer patients despite it nearly destroyed him 10 years ago. Paying an out of court settlement and people still didn't respect him and his career failed ever since. Prince is seen as a musician and not some rapist or pedophile. So what if he's not on the charts heavy, really neither has Michael. His Number Ones didn't do nothin because it came out the same day they arrested him and even if it did well in other countries, it ain't the US. So I want to say I am so proud of Prince, he looks fabulous at 45, he ain't fucked his face up, he is still looked at and respected as a real musician and he's not sleeping in bed with 12 year old boys or dangling babies over balconies. 20 years later Who's BAD now!

As much as I used to admire Michael Jackson, he is a corporate made image gone amok! Michael can not tune Prince's guitar and his last few LP's only proves that he can't produce his way out of a paper bag! He does not play an instrument and he's been doing the same tired ass James Brown moves since I was a kid. His claim to fame will be "Thriller" and being accused of molesting kids. His eccentricities have overshadowed the music and his biggest mistake was letting go of Quincy Jones as a producer.

Prince on the other hand is a musical genius. The man has made music that will live on like Marvin, Jimi, Sly, Al Green, Chaka, Curtis Mayfield, and James Brown. He's a Master of Music. Granted, he too has had his share of eccentricities but he still made good music and he also gave you great entertainment. You have never heard of Prince so much as hurt a housefly but I am sure that he has had his issues to deal with.

Michael Jackson is a character. A has been and someone who should just moonwalk his way to Las Vegas and become a lounge act.

I dont really have much 2 say because most of u put what i wouldve. Prince is just a natural artist & dont use a bunch of gimmiks & gadgets, he lets the music speek for itself & as a live performer MJ cant touch him, that is no comparison, i mean MJ lip sings & 2 me that is a HUGE no no plus ive never seen MJ play a instrument & Prince plays about everything there is 2 play. I dont even know why Prince is always compaired with MJ its just stupid, they r NOTHING alike. Thats like compairing Pizza with Chicken soup, its totally different. But any ways Prince is the truth, the musician, the icon. When MJ stops playin with children & picks up a instrument, then maybe ill respect him a little, but i dont see that happening anytime soon.

Peace & b wild

No, Michael can't play the guitar like Prince, just as Prince would look pretty pathetic in a dance contest next to Michael.

It's swings and round-abouts.

I understand that this is p site, but some ppl in here r quite arrogant in their view/s. I read somewhere here that MJ is not a "true" artist or musician because he cannot play the guitar or some crap like that...what a joke...Michael's whole body has been an instrument, and no dissin' P moves, but if u've been 2 1 of MJ's concerts then u would know that he is 1 of the very greats 2 get up on stage. Oh, and 'Bad' as a single may seem 'crap' to some of u, but don't forget that P was going 2 b involved in a duet with MJ on the single, but thought himself that it would b a hit, and that it didn't need him 2 become 1...and it was a no 1 @ the time on the chart that probably matters most.
