Bhangra singer names Prince a favourite on MTV India

The Bhangra / Punjabi duo ‘Stereo Nation’ was guest-featured on MTV SELECT on MTV INDIA Yesterday (23rd December, 2003). Towards the end of the show, the host asked ‘Taz’ of Stereo Nation (‘Taz’ whose real name is ‘Tarsem Singh, was known as ‘Johnny Z’ earlier) about any artist whom he respected or liked. To this ‘Taz’ replied, “There is one artist who I think is the most talented musician on the earth and I really love his music, and that is, PRINCE”. The host as a special tribute to Stereo Nation then played ‘The most beautiful girl in the world’. I must point out here that only the songs on the available play list are played on MTV SELECT but in this case they made an exception and played Prince who was not on the play list. The song way back in 1994 was a huge hit in India and also in other parts of Asia.

Prince does have a huge following in India. When I was in India back in December 1999 the indian magazine "Raga to Rock" had prince on the front cover and did an in depth interview plus a review of "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic". The reviews were very positive. I was in India last month but you cannot get "The Rainbow Children","ONA Live", "NEWS" or "Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas" because of lack of distribution, maybe Prince could not find a distributor in India. The fans over there order new releases straight through the NPGMC.

Johnny Zee does have a good voice...too bad this story and his opinion on Prince is irrelevant.

Hey, I don't believe there are 'Indian' Prince fans . I always thought I was the only one, guess I was wrong.

I am Indian and started seeing him in 1984 - both Toronto MLG shows and then about 35 more since then (in Canada, USA and Europe). + the other 970 concerts by other artists - since 1980.

great gr319. By the way, the prince story in 'Raga to Rock' was a complete lift from an American magazine. however, I felt quite delighted to see Prince on the cover of an indian mag.
