C.J.: Jumping Jehovah! Prince goes a door-knockin'

C.J.: Jumping Jehovah! Prince goes a door-knockin'
C.J., Star Tribune
Published October 12, 2003

Proselytizing for Jehovah's Witnesses during last Sunday's Vikings game wasn't the smoothest call Prince has ever made. An Eden Prairie woman, who prefers to be identified only as Rochelle, said, "Door bell rings. My husband runs upstairs and says, 'Prince is at the door!' I said, 'No way.' " Even though this was an inopportune time, they let in the man who introduced himself at "Prince Nelson" and another man. "I'm terrible with names," Rochelle said. "He was a bass player for some group, a long time ago. Older gentleman." Larry Graham? "Very good," Rochelle said. "This is Sunday about 2 o'clock. And it's the night of Yom Kippur. My first thought is 'Cool, cool, cool. He wants to use my house for a set. I'm glad! Demolish the whole thing! Start over!' Then they start in on this Jehovah's Witnesses stuff. I said, 'You know what? You've walked into a Jewish household, and this is not something I'm interested in.' He says, Can I just finish? Then the other guy, Larry Graham, gets out his little Bible and starts reading scriptures about being Jewish and the land of Israel." Uh-oh. Rochelle said she could not help but think, the Vikings had possession of the ball about two seconds ago. "They stayed for about 25 minutes," Rochelle said. "Left us a pamphlet." She should have asked Symbolina for an autograph. "There's no reason to slam him," she said. "He didn't do anything wrong; he was very kind. We watched him leave. Outside is a big black truck with a woman, long dark hair, in the front seat and they left." The woman met the general description of Prince's supposed wife, Manuella. Rochelle seemed perplexed that Prince didn't seem to stop at any other houses in her neighborhood. "They go door-to-door. Walking. He wasn't walking. He was driving." Hey, he was knocking on doors during a Vikings-Falcons game -- you can't expect Symbolina to follow ALL the rules of the religion he declared as his new faith in a 2001 magazine interview. "It was so bizarre, you would have just laughed," she said. The perfect esprit d'escalier came to Rochelle after Prince left: "If I showed up at Paisley [Park], would you let me in your front door to talk about Judaism?" There was no response from Paisley Park, where a note seeking a comment was delivered Thursday.

I'm glad to hear that Mani knows her place and stays in the car while the men folk do The Work.

the key sentence in this story is:

"There's no reason to slam him," she said. "He didn't do anything wrong; he was very kind".

Leave it at that CJ

I always turn these buggers away at the door but I have to admit I would let Prince in just to ask him a few tricky questions and take the piss a little bit.

I'd let my kids jump all over him and see how he reacts.

I'd offer him a beer too. beer

I wouldn't let Larry in though.

I would have had Pussy Control lightly playing in the background the whole time he was there. And then brought out the latest issue of the Advocate and shared my life with him too. I'm sure him and Larry would have enjoyed that.

The JW were just at my door the other day. They gave me a flyer to read. Right on the front cover it says "There is no place in heaven for homosexuality" This turned me off right away. I believe God loves those who believe in his powers, reguardless of their sexual orientation. Besides, isn't Prince in the closet???

Would you honestly be mad if he tried to share his beliefs with you? I honestly wouldn't care. I would listen to what he had to say and maybe debate and hopefully we would both learn. Contrary to popular belief Christianiy was not spread merely by wars. Christianity was spread by people sharing the word with one another. I don't think evolution of a person is a waste. I mean could you really still vibe to Prince if he was still writing songs like "Jack U Off" and the like? Don't me wrong all great songs but at 44 its time to grow up. I listen to R.Kelly he is 35 writing lyrics like a 15 year old. I am not impressed (though he is a very talented producer and entertainer). I don't know I just think that if the girl who wrote this was jewish and she wasn't offended (nor should she have been) and Prince was still respectful of her faith, desires and wishes, then I really don't see the big deal of it all. Excpet the fact the a world famous rock star came to your door to talk about God.

For me, the beginning of the end was the association between Prince and Larry Graham. I wish they'd never met. Sure I'm being selfish, but I miss the music. There's always hope though, he is a Gemini after all.

I know about the whole 'religious crusades' etc etc - I was brought up a catholic...I have no problem with P & larry going door 2 door...except that I used 2 like the way his beliefs were all ways 'inclusion' oriented - not exclusion oriented...dissappinted that he's gone the way of any organised religion - after all they r in reality only there 2 gain $$$ r'nt they...faith is a different thing entirely - I'd listen 2 P if he was talking about his own personel beliefs - but the JW's seem 2 have a different take on things that I would have expected P 2 have...so maybe he really has changed!!!BTW I think the Rainbow Children is an excellent album...I just wouldn't want to see P walking down the street bible in hand like that desperate MF larry smile what a waste...he had better succes with his earlier method oif reaching people...but I guess he doesn't have 2 many people listening now

I don't believe any person(s) should declare to be an authority when it comes to The Truth.

and I don't believe Prince would try to enforce his beliefs on2 others either. He will make his views be known by others just like he does now, but that's where it ends.

If he pulled a stunt like this, it would be out of curiosity.

One thing I want to know is why are we JUST NOW hearing this story... Yom Kippur was about 3 weeks ago right?! Is there a Jew in the house? If Prince came to my door the org would be the first to know about it. But then again no one would believe me.

So why did it take so long for us to hear about this if it is true...? anyone anyone... Somebody find me a calendar...

Well I hear you. I don't think all organized rellgion is about money. There are just too many small churches serving their communities for that to be the case. However on the other hand we have all seen plenty of examples of churches that are aboout money that cprrupt the faithful. I have to admit you paint a funny picture of Prince walking down the street. I don't know I just get this vibe that he hit rock bottom after the baby died and Mayte left (not that he did not contribute to her leaving) and Larry was there with the answers. Also I remember before Prince found religion the biggest argument I ever got into with someone was whether or not Prince was a satan worshiper (don't even ask me the rational of the other person)
