Kiss covered live by UK band 'Athlete' on BBC1

In the early hours of Tuesday morning (20TH May) at 01.00am, BBC1 in the UK showcased the new digital BBC3 CHANNEL as it often does late at night.

Performing on a music programme, the new UK band Athlete performed an inspired live version of Prince's 'Kiss'.

They then went on to chat with the host about why they chose to cover Prince live on the show. They wanted to pay a homage to the 80s as it was the decade which fomed their formative years in terms of developing musical tastes, and Prince seemed to represent the '80s sound' better than most. They then went on to say they listened to many tracks before they came up with one that they could handle, and that wasn't too rude!

It was terrible, he tried to play with the song's melody. Real waste of time...

Urm, your both missing the whole point of it, and indeed 'covers'. They are meant to be 'interpretations' of the original songs, and this one was a bloody great effort.

If you want to hear something that sounds just like the original, yet sung by another artist, well I suggest u just stick to the 'original' version lol.

Just because you liked it doesn't make it good by default. I'm sure all those who were critical like some covers, just Athlete's version of "Kiss" happened to suck in our opinion.

-- As far as I can see, only 2 of you took a dislike to it (so far), and that's totally fine and your opinion is as valid as mine. My point if your care to re-read was that your arguements seems to be directed from a viewpoint that it was not 'close to the orignal'. In my opinion this is a ludicrous judgement to make. Have you heard the wonderful Prince covers cd entitled 'If I Were Prince'?

p.s. I don't recall stating that just becuase I liked it made it 'good by default', what a crazy thing to suggest.

"You are missing the point... a bloody great effort" was pretty damning, anyway it's a ridiculous argument if the other poster or I liked it surely we would just say so. In it's own right it just didn't work IMO, very dull.

p.s. You said and I quote:
'It was terrible, he tried to play with the song's melody'

Do you realise how silly that sounds. I mean god, heaven forbid any artist would 'try' and play around with a song's melody!

Okay to take it to it's conclusion I should have said "I didn't like their alterations to the song". I can't speak for the other critic but I simply didn't like Athlete's performance while you did, brought nothing new or interesting to my ear.

Yeah, I actually have all the Prince tribute albums and I like some of the covers, this one just happened to be poor IMO.

it wasn't a great cover in my own opinion (but too lazy sounding) but it was nice to have someone honour prince! i waited till the bloody end to hear it when Dermot mentioned that someone was gonna do it.
