I can't believe that they won't release Purple Rain or Sign of the Times in a letterbox DVD. Maybe the demand isnt' there, but it is just absurd to release pan and scan versions of these classics.

UK DVD (Region 2) release of Purple Rain is in Widescreen

See Amazon UK site, link here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/e...22-9908401

I have it and can confirm that it definitely is widescreen version of the movie.

It's Region 2. Unless you have a multi-regional DVD player you cant play in the states. I think Circuit City sells a cheap one at their stores.

Almost all DVD players can be easily hacked. The real issue is NTSC vs. PAL (European standard). Most DVD players sold in the States only play NTSC, so getting a PAL DVD will be a waste, I think.

region 4 (australia, new zealand and some or all of asia) is definately widescreen...haven't watched it 4 a while...must do that - wish they would bring out Sign o the Times - and Under the Cherry Moon...and Graffiti Bridge and The Under taker etc etc...y not a B&W version and have special sections in colour - or the whole thing! UTCM is one of my all time favourites! smile

From what I've read it is impossbile for Under the Cherry Moon to be shown in color. It was actually filmed in B&W, even though most modern B&W films are filmed in color and the color later taken out. From what I remember, Prince did this for two reasons:
1. He liked the look better
2. It was cheaper

it was actually filmed in color as warners wanted 2 release it in color, but prince wanted it in monochrome. they shot it in color but prince got his way in the end and it was b/w

furthermore monochrome film stock is now more expensive than color cuz its a lot harder 2 get as not many ppl want 2 use monochrome and color is mass produced. color film is approximately $5000 per real lasting 15 minutes. so shooting unnecessary takes is an expensive process

Thanks for the info! I don't think I watch UK DVDs in the US, but it's good to know that at least they made the DVD somewhere. Maybe I will watch it someday if I get the right hardware.
