Morris Day ~ Color of Success (1985) era

I know it can be hard for folk not to stay focused, but we talk so little about people like Morris Day outside of Prince, let's try to not deal with 1984(Ice Cream Castles) or the 'what if's' in connection to Prince. Any dealings with Prince during his 1985-86 Color of Success period is good.

AllMusic Review by Rob Theakston

After the temporary collapse of the Time, Morris Day went into the recording studio for his first solo excursion. While the trademarked Minneapolis pop-funk sound still remains at the forefront of each composition, the absence of the magic is extremely noticeable in the production booth. That aside, The Color of Success offers to fans what Day does best, funky but accessible dance-pop music in the vein of many of his Minneapolis contemporaries. While the album runs a little bit on the short side, there is no filler and it is surprisingly consistent from start to finish. Fans of Day's work with the Time will enjoy this record, but first-time listeners would be better-served checking out his earlier work first.

  1. Color of Success – 5:20
  2. The Character – 4:07
  3. The Oak Tree – 7:22
  4. Love Sign – 6:22
  5. Don't Wait For Me – 7:12
  6. Love / Addiction – 5:10

Patience gone
Time to move along
No one to blame
It is time to win
Don't criticize
Try to realize
I am number one in the end

Play to win
That is the color, the color of success
I play to win; oh, I
Play to win
There is no other
Color of success
I play to win; oh, I

Free as a bird
It is time to spread the word
Dark whether is gone
The sun is shining
First, understand
I am not your typical man
Shrewd, I am kind
You cannot deny me

Play to win
That is the color, the color of success
I play to win; oh, I
Play to win
There is no other
Color of success
I play to win; oh, I

Play to win
That is the color, the color of success
I play to win; oh, I
Play to win
There is no other
Color of success
I play to win; oh, I

Do not take me wrong by the words of my song
Bitterness gone, It is behind me
Fresh, picturesque at my very best
Gratefully strong, and proud to be me

Play to win
That is the color, the color of success
I play to win; oh, I
Play to win
There is no other
Color of success
I play to win; oh, I

If I want to make love sometimes
It is all right
It is my life
I play to win

If I want to get crazy sometimes
It is all right
It is my life
I play to win

If I want to make love sometimes
It is all right
It is my life
I play to win

If I want to get crazy sometimes
It is all right
It is my life
I play to win.: b

I'm so glad you are doing this album.

I loved this album when I was a kid. Heck I still do.

I always loved the first lines of the song.

When he used the word TIME. I always wondered if it had a double meaning?

Patience gone

TIME to move along

it is TIME to win

TIME to spread the word

Cool stuff. I always enjoy reading these!

How cute. Yep I'dda been one them church ladies fawning all over him. Of course at the time I'd been younger than him so that would have been complicated but still. A cutey.

The Associated Artists forum should have more of this stuff. It's much more interesting than reading about Mayte's latest tweet or some back-up dancer's new photoshoot or whatever.

I like Color Of Success. It's not a great album by any stretch of the imagination but it's solid. I bought this album on CD in HMV about 10 years ago. Before I was even a Prince fan. My boyfriend at the time is a massive fan of Prince but was disappointed that outside of The Time, it was practically impossible to find any albums by artists related to Prince. Especially here in Ireland, where back then, the only Prince albums that were regularly stocked in shops was Purple Rain, Parade and that crap "greatest hits" compilation. Everything else was rarer than teeth on a hen. But one day I was browsing through the "import" section and came across Morris Day's Color Of Success album. I recognised the name from my boyfriend mentioning him and bought the album. It got a lot of plays before I eventually gave it to him.

Agree totally. Who cares about some of these "associated artists"

I'm putting this on my playlists for this week.

There are so many albums and songs that this forum reminds me of.

Guess I'm just a victim, girl
Victim of society
I guess I'm just a character
At least that's what the people think
(That's what they think!)
I'm just a victim, girl
(He's just a victim!)
Victim of life today
(Society!)
I'm just a character
(You've got the character!)
At least that's what the people say
(That's what they say!)
Eyes of expectations girl
Look beyond reality
Just to be original
Doesn't come so easily
(Not easily!)
I'm just a victim girl
(He's just a victim!)
Victim of life today
(Society!)
I'm just a character
(You've got the character!)
At least that's what the people say
(That's what they say!)
Guess you'd call it image girl,
Or maybe personality...
I guess you'd call it character,
Wanted by society!
Maybe what you're seeing is a bit of grandiosity on my part,
or maybe, it's just an image of what you'd like for me to be...
I'm not sure, but if it works for you, then it works for me
I'm just a victim girl
(He's just a victim!)
Scared to fall in love
(Society!)
I'm just a character
(You've got the character!)
The Character... Open eyes and scared of love!
(Scared of love! [repeat 4x])

Definately.

We've done ablum eras on Jesse Johnson, Vanity, Jill Jones, and I think there is still an active one on Sheila E(Sex Cymbal)
