Sheila E guest co-hosting on "The Talk" today I think she has the personality for a talk show so this should be interesting. I'm dvr'ing it and will watch later. The show is also on on-demand for those of you who have that

I think Sheila is being a bit of a drama queen where this release is concerned..well intentioned maybe (maybe? I honestly can't tell with Sheila), but missing a few things. For one, those recordings have been bootlegs for years so odds are Prince already knew they were out. For another thing, its not a diary, its a man making some music and coming up with ideas. He had been okay with rehearsals being seen, there are clips of him making a song with Mavis, why is this so much different? And third, she was stating that Lisa was wrong that it was a teaching instrument because if it were, it should have been given away for free. Well, since when has education been free (we pay for college, school books even public school through taxes.) She herself has probably contributed to books like Duane Tudahl's. Does that not stare into his process without his permission? Also, she didn't ask permission (presumably) when she told everyone about his engagement to her. Also, Sheila supported Mayte Garcia telling the world about P's extremely private moments in her book. (yes, i know Mayte has the right to tell their shared story, but that stuff is still uber private and something P wanted to remain that way). If I were cynical, I would think that either Sheila thinks that the tapes will disappoint buyers so she is warning people off them..or that she doesn't want people to realize that Prince didn't need a massive backing band of percussionists etc to be worth listening to..(maybe she is afraid that the making of Love Bizarre will come out. LOL) Sorry to come off so cynical of Sheila, but since she told Judith to stay quiet with the police and since she rushed out to talk non-stop about P, her engagement and do a bit of self-promotion after his death, I am wary about Sheila's intentions. I respect that she mostly keeps stuff private but at times she takes this privacy thing to the point of seeming like the protection of a brand rather than the protection of a person. When she broke away from Prince in 2011, she complained online and threw some shade but didn't bother mentioning that drugs were probably part of the problem (probably because she didn't want to get sued) but had she mentioned it then..well, who knows? Like most people in P's circle, they seem to care about his privacy either when they were forced to or when it suits them themselves the most. I am with Lisa and Jill on this one..let's the rehearsals and behind the scene song making be heard (just package and promote it appropriately).

But in a lot of ways, the music (released or not) was his diary. . I don't think Sheila E knows much of what Prince thought of the bootlegs out there or that we even have stuff of hers. Prince isn't revealing anything destructive or damaging. No family secrets. . And give the music away? seriously Sheila? I think she is being overly sentimental and dramatic, and no one on that show is a hardcore fan that could challenge Sheila E? . She said similar stuff about the vault right after he passed away.

"For me, because I knew Prince so well... it would be different if they were releasing music that he had recorded... I was with him a lot of the time, the cassettes are personal, if you weren't in the room with him, then he's not going to let you hear it," revealed Sheila E. "Those cassettes are ideas he would come up, he would sit at the piano, guitar, he'd write lyrics... it's personal, this is his moment of him being with himself... I think the hard part about that is to me, these cassettes that have these moments that are personal, it's like looking into his diary, that's reading his diary without asking his permission."

I agree. I hate to be cynical (honestly), but what makes this more private than other stuff she has endorsed or talked about publically? I wish I understood her reasoning or rationalization better so maybe I wouldn't just assume that she has some other motive.

Right, hey I can understand the 'protective' feel people, myself included can have for Prince. I think this thing Sheila E has, and I understand, is a possessive thing. It is like many fans who speak out and say 'Prince wouldn't allow this, Prince wouldn't let this happen' etc but they really don't know. . Is Sheila E going to donate 1000s of dollars to the Estate/Paisley Park to keep it going? . Nothing about this set was more private than Do Me Baby, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Sister and many other released songs.

I understand protecting his personal privacy (the details and specifics) but there is nothing in this recording that is specific enough to garner her criticism, especially since she supported Mayte's very personal book. Her inconsistencies are what bother me. If she said that Prince's vault stuff should be left alone because he wouldn't have thought it was finished or good enough to be released (despite its actual quality), then I wouldn't mind her being against its release (Michael Bland is against it for those reasons) but calling it a "diary" instead of an artistic expression of some somewhat vague emotions (which many of his released songs also qualify as, like you said) is hyperbolic. I think calling Lisa out was kind of uncalled for (hell, maybe it was a bit of revenge for the Revolution dropping hints that they disapproved of people being so vocal and media friendly after P died.)

I don't think she called Lisa out, I think she quoted what Lisa said as leverage for the estate to think about her idea. But universities can still buy the album and use for academic purposes. She didn't think that idea out either, because if students/teachers got a copy of unreleased studio sessions of Prince, does she think they will not distribute it underground or think to make money off of it?

She was respectful to Lisa even if she was disagreeing with her. I will give you that. I might be a bit too hard on Sheila..I guess I am a bit disillusioned. Good point about giving the song away--its like creating another bootleg but this time with clearer sound.

In other words, shhhh..only Sheila can comment on all things personal about Prince. Shhhh don't talk Sheila, take the advice you gave to Judith when there was a police investigation going on, shhhh.

Sheila E's words actually represent a vocal portion of the Prince community

Eve is a regular new co-host on The Talk. She has discussed a few times in past shows on how they met and recording with Prince. She said some very flattering things about him. "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

Prince talks about the Vault with Kurt Loder Some amazing jazz work You'll find the best most heavy tracks that the Revolution recorded, the ones that we thought were too far gone back in the 80s you'll find the more psychodelic rock version of the Time you'll find the really erotic Prince the really erotic sensual Prince you'll find the future
Kurt: What's going to happen to all that stuff? Will it ever come out? ...
Oh yes, I'll give it away...

I don't take issue with Sheila's comments at all, nor am i cynical towards her. I feel like her perspective holds alot of weight, considering their 30+ year relationship. She's protective because she's got insights on Prince that none of us will ever have. I've always felt that the bands and artists Prince worked with should be involved in the process of identifying and choosing music to be released because again, they have insights that we don't. The tricky part of that would be the possible clashing of viewpoints, but everybody's insights would make for great liner notes. I think we also have to understand that different people had different experiences with Prince, which will definitely effect their entire stance on certain things. I feel like both Sheila and Lisa's comments and feelings about PM83 are valid.

I saw this interview when it aired and I have to agree with your observations. I think Sheila's reactions speak more about herself and her own issues at this time than anything that has to do with Prince... I admire Shiela E of course, and yes her perspective holds weight, but it won't hold weight on everything. Sheila E and Prince knew each other around 83 but Sheila E wasn't in the studios with Prince yet. Sheila E wasn't seen in around Prince's camp until 84. Sheila E wasn't brought in until February of 1984 to start on music that was intended for Apollonia 6. So unless Prince sent her a tape of this, which I doubt she's heard this until recent, her perspective on it is like a 1997 NPG member with no weight on Computer Blue. . Yes she is protective, especially with the ex fiance feelings, I think she is being protective from a 'lovers' standpoint, not a business standpoint. . She may have insights on Prince none of us will ever have, but we as fans have insights she will never have. The process has to include the artist and the viewer or there is no process. Withought us, this all ends, point blank. And again, she lacks insight in that 30yrs in that she doesn't even know what PRINCE said or felt about the vault music. WE do, WE have the interviews where he did talk about it. She has to get those words from Prince before she can actually get on talk shows and tell people what Prince would want or what she thinks he would want, because we have the quotes from the horses mouth. As a fan, if I was on that show with her I could have put her to shame. . I too agree that the band members/engineers/techs etc should be involved in the process. Not just to give their thoughts in liner notes. But Lisa & Jill being in the camp and around the music on this release means more than Sheila E who wasn't yet. I would love to hear how Cat feels hearing this, but I wouldn't need her on the liner notes or a part of this process, because she wasn't in the camp yet. . The only reason I don't think Sheila's comments are valid on this because she clearly had not heard/read Princes thoughts on the Vault music. Because it is the opposite of what she is saying. AND she is comming from an emotional-possessive place, not factual or business. And from a business perspective, it isn't reasonable, because the bootleggers have access and have had it for a long time, and make money off of it. Not to mention those of us who already have this stuff, that she doesn't know about. It's out there one way or another. But when it comes to any reissue/deluxe of her albums and music and the tours/shows being released that she performed on, she must be involved.

Yeah, and I understand it, I get protective of Prince's music too. And his image and who covers the music etc. But from her perspective she seems to be actually responding as a 'spouse' with no legal rights to the deceased but only emotional. . I need to find the post from 2016 where she talked about the Vault.

I wonder what The Glamorous Life would have sounded like if Prince gave it to Jill Jones like he first intended to? "That mountain top situation is not really what it's all cracked up 2 B when was doing the Purple Rain tour had a lot of people who knew 'll never c again @ the concerts.just screamin n places they thought they was suppose 2 scream."

But that's the problem with some of these exes, they think they are the spouse.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Thoughts on the possibility that she is responding as person Who knew him behind the interview, was privy to his actual Feelings ( from 84- 2011) beyond what he fed the media. His Chris rock Interview suggest that he knew he had to “dance” for folks to keep them coming. I think his vault talk at times was a carrot. I think Shelia is protective but is interested in giving us something real and from as close from his heart as she can. If you get a chance to see her you should she is sharing sweet moments from her time. It can’t be denied tho that her viewpoint is prof and personal.

But that's the problem with some of these exes, they think they are the spouse. He had toys, they all volunteered to stand in line to be toys, he was like a kid Who decides on a whim who the favorite of the day is going to be. Now all the toys are in the Box looking for lost purpose, their boy is gone to pull them from the box. It will take time for them to climb out he made the box cozy for them.

I don't see people like Sheila E Vanity(Denise) Susannah as toys, he continued friendships with these ladies throught his lifetime. He did have real emotional connection with them.
Sheila E is experiencing what many of us are too. For example, for me, I have a lot of artists I like songs/albums of but not many that I attached to them like a culture. And Prince was the greatest example of that for me. So there are days, in my busy active life, when I'm quiet, and see a picture of Prince or music or PR/UTCM etc and realize I was in a cozy box too
She's doing her thing, she always has, outside of Prince, but I suspect she feels the same thing I do as far as Prince no longer being here.

There is not question on my side that she is responding as a person who knew him... We cannot assume that Prince was 'feeding the media' which would make him a liar. I think Prince was being real on at least the 3-4 accounts of him talking about the vault music and bootlegs that he was being real. When asked people not to buy bootlegs and that he had not problem with people giving or sharing them(he knew they were out there, since he released a lot of them himself) . 'the dance' couldn't have anything to do with the Vault to keep them coming, because that had become out of his control. I doubt people kept coming to concerts because they hoped they could get a bootleg. Also Prince started released unrelease music via the Crystal Ball around he same times of the 1999 Kurt L interview, and it became a regular thing for him to ask the fans for requests of songs to be released via NPG radio like Rebirth of the Flesh and other. It just feel off. So in the time he talked about releasing the stuff, he started releasing the stuff.
The carrot was real. He was releasing the music
Disc one
Disc two

agree and to add i didn't mean "toys" in the sense that they weren't well loved, cared for and chosen playthings. there is nothing more meaningful in our lives than what our chosen playthings represent and how they provide comfort. but if you got comfortable in the role of favorite toy it might speak to why they respond in a spousal manner. and i can see their perspective right or wrong healthy or not why they repond in that way.

i am hearing you. but we can't assume he was always truthful either. he told stories and he told truths. that interview on MTV when he talks about monogomy, truth or story or a bit of both??? and as you say you believe he was truthful on 3/4ths of the vault stuff. i really don't think he would want that stuff released, or i don't think he himself was really gonna dig back and do it. and as to if he would care or not now, i am guessing he didn't cause if he did he would have left a will. so i think he would not have done it, but ultimately i don't think he cared about it all that much in the end/reality. but heck i don't know. What I mean is factually he did start releasing Vault material, and even asking fans for choices of songs to be released. . But also the other interview he said after he was going he knows the music will be heard/released. That is kinda plain and simple to the point. I feel if he didn't want anyone to get to it 1. a will 2. destroy it . Even back in the 80s Prince left music all over the place, and he even gave away copies of The Black Album and had the Camille album pressed, not to mention giving tones of songs on tapes to his band members to practice, listen to to etc not just current but like sending stuff to Andre Cymone, Lisa Wendy & Susannah after they all were gone etc

Andre said that when he left the band, he never listened to another Prince song.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah he said another Prince album, he said he heard stuff on the radio and Prince would send him songs to listen to. Like he heard Crystal Ball during the Parade era 1986
