At one point this stunning blonde walks over to me, taps me on my shoulder and says, “Hello, I’m Jamie Shoop and Prince would like you to escort him to the mens room.” How bizarre I thought. Certainly a line I’ll never forget. “Who,” I asked. “Prince!” she said contemplating my response. Didn’t I know who Prince was. She pointed to him and I nonchalantly glanced over my shoulder in his direction. What an eyeful this boy. “What’s wrong,” I said. “Can’t he hold it himself?” This was of course the beginning of a communication line based on sheer poetry. He had the biggest doe eyes I’d ever seen. “Wait here I’ll go and get him” Jamie said. He sauntered over as if on a catwalk with more than enough confidence trying hard not to smile. Obviously somebody famous because everyone was looking his way. I regret to say that I did not. You see I’d been in Japan for the last year and hadn’t kept up with the latest music in the U.S.A. Approximately six months previous to this moment I recalled seeing his face in a record shop in Japan. For a split second I thought to myself, “I wouldn’t mind meeting up with this guy someday. He kind of looks like he could be my brother.”

So here he was, asking me if I wanted to go outside and get some fresh air. Obviously the bathroom line wasn’t working. Michael Jackson passed by trying hard not to be noticed. What was he doing in a place like this then. I stopped to say hello followed by a quick goodbye with Prince nudging me to leave. Once outside I could hear by his speech that he was a little tipsy. He kept asking and repeating my name over and over again. Then he totally shifted gears by asking if he could try on my coat. I laughed a little and thought, “why not?” He looked pretty good in it but then again I determined that he might very well be gay.

She said in 1988 Playboy interview that he was not wearing anything under his coat. "This is the boy for me" she said about her thoughts in that moment. Man, I would've loved to have been a squirrel up the tree watching. lol lol faint

— Vanity, excerpt from an unreleased version of Blame it on Vanity

She writes about this particular event many times and many ways. She obviously subtracted / edited out of her published book the truly mind-blowing aspects of their first eventful, meaningful and meaning-filled meeting, but what's interesting is the sublime subtle nuances that appears in some telling’s of the tale that doesn't appears in others that I found to be the most telling.

In some cases I don't think at the time she even realizes the initial deliberate intent surrounding a particular moment when it happened or even when she first wrote it, she just writes it. Her rewrites appear to be a little more thoughtful, more analytical.

.

.

Michael Jackson didn't just pass by in one version.

From a readers point-of view I wanted to know more about Jamie Shoop and why she was helping Prince meet women in such a manner. Of course, now assuming the intent was all business? What would happen if some woman accepted the indecent proposal?

Denise doesn't give herself enough credit for her own accomplishments prior to meeting Prince, as if Prince had a problem with finding a pretty face. It makes you wonder if she really knew that he was looking for one particular woman to front his sexy all girl group (and be his love interest in a movie? Which must had been icing). She later does a couple of things that makes me think she did not know, never put two and two together or she addresses it and just dismisses it with the acknowledgment of him manipulating her.

I'm curious about how many times did he use that line on women with the right profile potential? Didn't he otherwise advertise, have a talent search or do a cattle call?

She writes as if her only intent was to reflect that she really didn't know who Prince was at the time. The thing is, Prince wasn't Prince... yet. That is, not to the world... but apparently for Denise nothing much had changed between now and then in how she thought of him.

.

Except for that one night, that first night at his home, when he made her sing Nasty Girl with tears streaming down her face. Except for the one hint in that moment Denise otherwise never writes about Prince possibly only being (initially) interested in her from a business point-of-view; only interested in her prior accomplishments and what that could do for him.

The attention of a cheering crowd at a concert can be a rush and a powerfully intimidating backdrop to influence someone. Which could be why he wanted her there and then eventually blocked her entry unless she loved him, would move in with him and let him make her a Star.

.

Other than “Love” Denise does not seem to consider why Prince is making this request of her. She credits him with the opportunity as if he took a chance and was doing her a blind favor out of the goodness of his heart based on her word.

Who really took the chance? Debbie would say that they both did; and then would also give credit to Prince for jump starting her career. Then Debbie will begin to really talk about her big sister in a manner where you would just forget about Prince. No disrespect, and you can’t discount the import of his presence, but off stage with these 3, Prince was like the straight man in a comedy act.

Debbie often adding “ask Cat.”

I digress…

.

I’m certain Prince did homework. In 1982 and in the midnight hours after their awkward first brief meeting, within 3 hours Prince was able to acquire the phone number to the home Denise was staying that night. The headline of article in the Canadian newspaper “I Want to be a Star” is another example and evidence of this fact, in how he said "You want to be a star, don't you?" On that not before making her sing. How it was said by Morris in the movie. And also the song.

.

So before proposing that she moved in with him, what had been reported in newspapers and what Prince may have learned about Denise prior to the night they first met includes that Denise had already been Miss Canada, was a working artist, wrote lyrics, had been in 3 movies (one of which before it was even made European distributers lined up to purchase based upon Denise’s photo’s alone ), she had been in Playboy, was an international model, was pursued by a very famous Hollywood director, dated Adam Ant, and it had been reported that she may have signed with Polygram and had wrote lyrics for Stevie Wonder.

Soon after their meeting Denise was off to Switzerland (I think there are photos) and Prince acquired the number and was calling.

.

For what Prince wanted to accomplish next I don’t believe he was taking much of a chance on Denise.

Denise on the other hand was taking a chance on love, everything else was already being offered to her. She even writes regarding the young genius being one to make this offer, fully aware that it was usually some old man making this type of proposal.

.

It really all began with Jamie Shoop?

T
Great input. Thank you. Both of them were taking a chance,IMO.but neither were far enough along in their careers that it would have been a huge lose if it failed.

I am fascinated that the meeting as you say may not have been accidental as all accounts have been said for decades. How did he know she was even going to be at that locale? Does she give any indication of his homework to meet her? You mention she took a chance on love . . . when did it hit him because so far it seems as if his whole reason for meeting Denise and wining and dining while in Cali back then initially was just to manipulate her to be the centerpiece of his girl group. I am curious does she say when it changed on his end?

Jamie Shoop seems to be the where it all began and so cool they remained friends over the years. I can only imagine the laughs they shared over their younger days in the Prince camp and afterward.

Denise with Jamie Shoop, 2014

Are you sure that's Denise (Vanity)? I mean, the lady does favor her, but I thought Vanity was thinner than that (even in her middle age years). Do you know what year this was?

That is her and her weight fluctuated I would imagine due to medications.
