As for why she left and didn't do Purple Rain, Vanity said one of the reasons was money. She was only being paid $250 a week and Prince wasn't paying her for the tour they went on, or the fact that "Nasty Girl" was such a hit. "Prince was taking all that money and I thought 'you know what? This is adding up to nothing. I'm living out of a hotel-I gotta go' ". When asked if she had regrets about not doing Purple Rain, Vanity said she didn't and revealed that Prince wanted to pay her just $5,000 for the whole movie while she was being offered $300,000 to do ' The Last Dragon' movie. "I said,I'm outta here-that's the best you can do? bye". "It was just to hold me so I couldn't go anywhere. You know what I'm saying, so I couldn't do anything with my life ".

Since Vanity wrote/co-wrote all the songs on this album, I'd love to know what her mindset was. We know she had a love of halloween so I get the whole vampire thing. I'm curious what Motown thought of all the provocative lyrics too.

it's amazing that Motown even allowed a song like "Pretty Mess" to be a single lol that's one of the most suggestive singles ever! lol

Yes. I always believed it was the money. And that is more than reasonable.
Not to take it further into a discussion of Purple Rain, but it seems Prince was so excited anxious and of course nervous about the Purple Rain era movie, that he might have been unconsciously sabotaging it. Letting Vanity go and firing Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis totally removed a few foundational bricks from this.

In that same interview with Taimak posted here, he says he only received 30 thousand for the movie, so it looks like although he was allowed to choose her because she was the girl he had the hots for, she ended up receiving more money than he did for "The Last Dragon." Maybe it had something to do with her contract with Motown. Though I read that she received 1 million and a Jaguar for that Motown deal.

OF4S, Any legit source as to what she received for her Motown deal and did it include the movie?

well,to be fair,Taimak was a newcomer when he got that role.Vanity,on the other hand, was well-known from her Vanity 6/Prince days.So it makes sense that she was paid more. Her popularity was a major selling point for the movie.

I wanted Vanity to stay and do the Purple Rain movie (and a second V6 album),but from a business standpoint, she probably made the right decision.$5000 vs. $300,000?? That's not a hard decision, lol

I agree. Vanity was the it girl in the early 80's. I'm surprised that Motown was led to offer such a lucrative contract on Taimak's recommendation alone. Makes me wonder if she was already on board with Motown and then got offered the movie, or was it that an album and a movie was a package deal to being with?

I've found the place,

finally found the place for you

And me to go if you want to get in, ha ha

Step up in the elevator, press number 7

That's all you've got to do to get to 7th Heaven

I can't believe what you're gonna see once you get inside

I know you'll come in alive

If you wanna play around in my school

You'll obey my golden rule

Keep it up!

Keep it up and around

I'll never let you down

Going up!

I'll keep it up and around, do I ever?

I've found the place, finally found my trace Of love inside,

I pray you'll arrive on time

Step off the elevator,

check the incinerator

Heaven never burned an angel on a fire

I can't explain how I'm gonna feel once you come inside

I know you'll love my ride

You can fool around in my room

And enjoy my golden rule

Keep it up!

Up and around, I'll never let you down

Going up! I'll keep it up and around, will I ever?

Never say never!

At heaven's elevator door

Because, once you dare...

You can't... Get it up... Anymore!

You've found my place,

you've finally found my place

Yes, love's inside, my love stands right on top!

Hop off the elevator, how's the incinerator?

Heaven never burned an angel on a fire!

Oh, I know, he'd never burn an angel on a fire

He's full of desire

Oh no, we don't burn angels on a fire!

Never thought of him of sabotaging it. It is interesting concept.

who else thinks that "Samuelle" is about Prince? hmmm

prince-and-vanity-6.jpg

Samuelle,this is your lover calling,Samuelle
Samuelle,this is your lover calling
Samuelle,do you belong to Marilyn?
I know she could never love your heart like me
I'm quite sure we belong together
Oh Samuelle, you cannot tell a lie
it echoes across the moon and the sky
Valerie,Valerie,Valerie,this is your conscience calling
Valerie,Valerie,Valerie,I don't wanna hear ya
I do recall carnivals were filled up with
crazy guys and paper dolls
Thought it would last forever

Oh Samuelle,I'm running down the aisle
wedding lace was written all over
I really want you,I really do
I really love you,rap on door
rap on door,ring bell,ring bell
naughty little thing,we may never know
the prince and the showgirl
wonders if never,ever

Oh Samuelle,I cannot tell
if I sing to you, will you ring my doorbell?
Ring my doorbell,I really want you
Ring my doorbell,I really do
Ring my bell,I really love you
Time will tell
all those nights I sat up alone
and stared at the phone
well I'm calling my shadow, calling Samuelle
I cannot let you go
I've thrown all the snowballs I can throw
Oh! Oh! Ooh hoo hoo
I know you love me,you can have me if you want to

I was thinking the same.
I love that image.

.

I'm also thinking of Sugar Walls

.

There is a place where I come from called Heaven

That's the place where all good children go

The houses are of silver, the streets are gold

But there's more where you come from, my Sugar Walls.

I think someone posted a recount by Vanity on how Prince was 'presenting' Jill and it was as Marylin Monroe. I don't think Madonna was doing the whole MMonroe/Material Girl thing/look till 1985

I hadn't heard that. However, Jill does have a Marilyn Monroe look in PR so it does make sense.

PMRC's 'Filthy 15':

Explicit Lyrics: "Come on and stroke me/Strap this thing on tight/If you want to glide down my hallway, it's open/Strap yourself in and ride"

Vanity Then: After Denise Matthews met Prince at the American Music Awards in 1980, the future "Darling Nikki" singer appointed her frontwoman of a girl group he eventually named Vanity 6 (after she refused to let him rename her "Vagina"). Prince wrote most of the songs on Vanity 6's 1982 self-titled debut, including the hit "Nasty Girl," and produced the LP. She was originally supposed to play Prince's love interest in Purple Rain, but she severed ties with the singer before filming, telling People, "I needed one person to love me, and he needed more." She put out her first solo album, Wild Animal, in 1984, which contained the suggestive "Strap On 'Robbie Baby'," a tune written by her then-boyfriend Robbie Bruce. In 1985, she posed nude for Playboy.

Yes, it was Denise's former brother in law Toban that posted it. Denise wrote that Jill Jones was bought on the scene to camouflage Susan moonsie's singing. She said JJ sang like a bird and that Prince dressed her up to look like Marilyn Monroe.

I guess It's a possibility that it could have been Jill Jones she refrenced. The fact that Susan had broken it off earlier, and then Vanity left him as well, did leave JJ with Prince all to herself... Or so Vanity might have thought, lol. Personally, I doubt that JJ was the reference. Vanity was friends with Susan moonsie, so I'm sure she was in the know as to who Prince was seeing, and it certainly wasn't only Jill Jones for him to belong to her alone, or anyone else for that matter, lol. She could have very well wondered if it really was Marilyn Monroe he was trying to conjure up, since she witnessed him doing it through Jill.
