Some Guys Send You Flowers, Prince Gives You Albums’: An Interview With Jill Jones

09/27/2016 10:02 am ET

An emotional moment in 1984’s Purple Rain after The Kid runs outside of First Avenue club after performing the title track to drive away on his bike. Stunned by the roar of cheers, he turns, smiling at the sight of a teary-eyed Jill who he greets with a playful “Hi” before running back inside.

Once a woman completed an album with Prince, the romantic period was over

Thanks for posting this article.

Hopefully, Jill Jones is added to the list of awesome Prince associated artists scheduled to perform at the Prince memorial tribute & celebrations being held in October because she is an amazing vocalist and has one of the best albums of any Prince protege.

The more I'm seeing Wendy as conniving/manipulative. A lot of things are beginning to make sense now.

don't you know you're not allowed to talk about W&L on here unless it's praise or giving them all the credit? lol anyway, this was a great article. after Prince's death a lot of people on FB groups kept talking about him transcending race and not seeing color whatever the hell that even means. All the while, as years went on Prince affirmed his blackness. i'm proud of him.

Ever since the WB wars, it seemd to me he made sure things were ba-lack as much as possible. I read about some instance where the n word was thrown around with the new guard at WB, or at least how he felt uncomfortable with the new guard as they were not as enamored with him as Ostin, etc were.

I think Jughead was veiled explanation and feelings about a lot of things besides just managers.

Jill is simply maing some of this come to light, such as her final comments on that Purple Rain panel last month.

.

I think you're giving a little too much credit to Wendy & Lisa, sure didn't Prince drop them when he was done with them as well? And hasn't Dez always stated that he left because he wanted to?

She was there though, not me shrug

"It was a way to distance himself from when he got in the game: the ambivalence of white, black, no creed, no race. That needs to be talked about more because that really gives you a frame of mind of where he evolved to and he never left it. He had a public side that he wanted to show but once he left the white record system, he was free to be, “This is who I really am.” He was a brotha. I don’t care what people wanna say. No, he was not Sammy lunchmeat! I’m sitting here and looking at everyone revising his history and somebody has to get on it because they’re just leaving out the chunks that matter!"

Thank you, Jill, for confirming what many have tried to explain here on the org, but typically ignored, locked, or deleted. I get the feeling she's saying this in direct response to how some here try to downplay what Prince tried to correct as he grew older/wiser, revising his history based in their assumptions/beliefs, etc. Brav-fucking-o.

There's a real tension between those who praised and loved him for his ambiguity (I mean the amount of people who have come out and said he helped them dealing with being gay/small/effeminate/mixed race etc.) and her point that once he got to a place in the (white record company) system where he was secure he was happy to step back from that ambiguity and embrace being "a brotha", along with all the trappings that come with that.

Yeah. For one Wendy and Fink didnt like that. Fink is quoted in A Pop Life that after Wally and them joined, "Prince wanted to hang around his black buddies"

Thank you for the article. It was very nice of her to mention Kim Upsher. I've always wanted to know more about her. What she said about her was very enlightening! As I've seen in the past how a thread that touches on the topic of race can turn out, I'm a little weary on the direction this thread will take. Prince has fans that are all races and creeds, so Please let's be respectful and thoughtful in our posts as not to offend anyone. Sometimes just a turn of phrase can be hurtful to others. Thanks again for the article. There's new interesting tid bits to analyze now... lol

I am grateful for Jill Jones' willingness to be open. I tend to believe that her perspective is pretty accurate.

The writing of this article itself (punctuation, words and letters missing etc.) was extremely poorly done, and that's too bad because what she has to say is so very important.

I read a few months back on the Org where someone had said Prince looked so sad this last year or so. I had made a new thread asking if people felt that was true and if so, why. I saw evidence to the contrary but I think most of us feel there was something sad about him. I wonder if this double-whammy of Kim and Denise both passing away got him down. Apparently Jill thinks it did. It's information like that that is so important to helping me understand and pray for this man I so admire.

Interesting about her saying the romance part was done once the album was made, and I did see a quote here on the org from an old Robik Powers thread where either she or someone else who knew Prince said most men give flowers or candy; Prince gave you a record deal.

. I think he simply fell in love with his protogees, or tried to empower beautiful women he dug into becoming singers. Sort of reminds me of how a mentor works. In Prince's case he got involved with them further and there's nothing that says there's anything wrong with that. He didn't choose other men's wives and he didn't get sued for being with under aged people.

It's not in this article, but I chuckle when I think of Jill's FB post which said that when she suggested sky diving, Prince stated he was not going sky diving.☂

Ah you guys... He is in a place now with Kim and Denise and all the others. I just think he led such a magnificent life. I'm bowled over by it sometimes.

So happy that Jill finally told her perspective in an interview. I would like for her to write a book and she can go self publishing route too.

She's needs to stop throwing shade at Wendy and Lisa. It's childish. Obviously whatever went down between them and Dez has been forgiven as he was part of the REV show earlier this month. People do grow up and people do forgive, something she has yet to do. Sad.
