Did you hear The Family back in 1985? I was watching Much Music in Canada every day, and I was aware of Vanity, Sheila E, Morris Day, and even St. Paul and Jesse Johnson solo but somehow I missed their video for "The Screams Of Passion" completely!

I still have some old reviews from German magazines at home, one guy (a hardcore Soul/Funk/Rap/Reggae disciple whom I used to trust a lot on his verdicts), wrote something like "okay, Around The World In Day was the desaster of the year, but the Family album and A Love Bizzarre prove that Prince still has got "it"

Love it! I wasn't really reading yet back then. Do you remember seeing the "Screams Of Passion" music video?

Video Soul on BET played it. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Back then, BET didn't broadcast until the afternoons anyway. It was infomercials in the morning. I think they stayed on all day on weekends though. Yes,I heard The Family back in 1985.Our local R&B radio stations played the two singles ("Screams Of Passion" and "High Fashion") and I saw the "Screams of Passion" video many times.
One strange thing,though....just a few months later,I read that the band broke up I was disappointed by that. They had alot of promise.

There were also a couple of syndicated video shows, Soul Beat and Odessey. "Screams of Passion" was in very heavy rotation on those shows. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I saw the video on TV a few times when it came out either on New York Hot Tracks or one of the UHF video channels before I got cable a few years later. There was a NY UHF station (channel 63) that aired music videos in the afternoon until around midnight and the older Prince videos that you didn't see all the time on the mainstream channels were played a lot on there as well as some of the associated acts.

I purchased the album the day it was released. Thee only project that I didn't get until years later was Apollonia 6 and that it because I never knew that they had an album until 1987/8. FOOLS multiply when WISE Men & Women are silent.

Friday Night Videos on NBC did a whole episode devoted to the Minneapolis scene...had to be 1985. I remember watching as an 11 year old, but only remember seeing Sheila E being interviewed (she had a HUGE black bodyguard with her); and I remember Susannah being interviewed alongside somebody (probably Paul). Susannah was wearing the same outfit from the "Screams of Passion" video. Saw the video a few times (it didnt look so "cheap" back then). As for the album...I loved it from the first listen. Make it so, Number One...

nope, no video for me back then. in 1985 there was no sattellite or cable TV at our place, so I was stuck with 2 (!!) TV channels (with one weekly full hour show dedicated to videos, yeaaahboyyyy!!!) and one pop radio station. to hear/learn about music outisde the Top 40 I had to get my information from music magazines or occasionally some AM radio. that kinda sucked... until I finally got at least some MTV and VH1 a few years later Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. They got some play on video shows (like Nightflight) and channels in the US. Of course, I bought the album the day it came out, because I was that nerd.

How did you know what day it was being released?

Yes, the original version I had it recorded on a Maxwell tape, actually recorded a few times They said it was a 'Promo' for Prince's new movie Under the Cherry Moon So I was a bit disappointed when it wasn't on the album, then hoped it would be a b side

I used to trip out what critics wrote back then In the 80s,I would always buy a magazine called Black Beat.Their review of Parade started out like this....
for Prince fans who felt like 'Around The World In A Day' was the most expensive Frisbee they ever purchased, perhaps they'll have a little more affection for Parade...

I think "High fashion" is a better song than "Screams of Passion" even though I like both.

He had so much music at that time And yes it totally sounds like something from Under the Cherry Moon but I don't think I hear it

Much Music. Now that brings back memories. I don't remember if my family had satellite or what, but i do remember watching videos on Much Music. The channel would sometimes come in fuzzy, so it probably was UHF. I used to be amazed that we(the USA) could get a channel from Canada. In my mind, that was like getting a channel from London, or some weirdness like that.
Anyway, yes, i remember The Family. That album definitely made some noise. In terms of video and radio, The screams Of Passion got some pretty decent plays. Honestly though, back then, i couldn't completely appreciate The Family. For the most part, that Family album sounded just a little too artsy fartsy, for my teenage ears. I always liked high fashion, nothing compares, and i love screams of passion. That song is perfect.
Now i completely get The Family album. Its a nice compliment to UTCM, Sheila's first two albums(with prince), and some of the Madhouse stuff.
Also Jesse Johnson, and Morris Day, had solo albums out around that time. And that's who most Prince, and The Time, fans, were paying attention too. The Oak Tree was getting a crapload of airplay, and that Jesse Johnson's Revue, album(along with Free World), was tearing shit up. Plus you had Sheila E and Prince doing their things. So basically, The Family didn't get the chance it should have. The ball was in Prince's hands, and he kinda blew it.
Anyway i brought the cassette not too long after it came out. I remember about a week after i brought it, i stepped on it by accident, and crushed the case. So what i did was take the tape out of the case, and put it in another one. It was all good after that. And the rest is history.
Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.
