Has there ever been a Prince band that was weaker than 3rdeyegirl?

I hope they disappear after this Hit n Run tour (one of my least favorite Prince concert techniques - makes me reminisce about the good ol NPGMC when real fans got the best shots at the best seats well in advance). Sure he has had weaker drummers (the much maligned Kirk Johnson and Bobby Z come to mind) than Hannah but her vocals are the worst he has ever had the audacity to present to us - and that includes Vanity! Her limitations are immediately apparent and Prince simply has her trying to do too much. And I am convinced that her husband is damn near worthless as far as I am concerned (I know there is all that speculation on his input or influence or some bullshit that was suppose to be "updating" Prince for the trendy teeny bopper, social media crowd but I am not buying any of it). All 3 of the chicks can play - especially that guitarist. But is still more flash and novelty than substance - and this is woefully obvious about 20 minutes into PlectrumElectrum. Especially when you look at the last 20 years of lineups that Prince has employed.

You've alluded to it yourself but the late 90s line up with Kirky J on drums is, in my opinion the weakest band Prince ever fronted.

Sure Hannah's not the greatest singer in the world but so what? I think 3EG come in for an unfair amount of criticism on here. When you look to reviews out there in "the real world" then acclaim for the current shows and line up is fairly unanimous.

YES. That late 90's incarnation of the NPG was ridiculously shabby.

I've been trying to give them a chance, but the What If song is a new low for me. I thought PLEL was a new low but I was dead wrong. I still think the girls can play, but for the love of God please keep Hannah off lead singing. If the next album by them is Christian rock then I'm totally out, no more 3EG for me.

3rdeyegirl is the new absolute nadir in Prince'career.

Josh Welton is a nobody, brings only more Christian fantacism

and dull sounds into the picture.

Hanna can obviously not sing at all and she's lead vocal

on too many tracks like whitecaps.

they can play, but Prince is in a self imposed prison.

he puts unneccasry limits on his art for crying out loud.

everybody who's a real fan of the real Prince we all knew suffer for it.

I wish he would jujst wake the f up.

for real and bring something to the table with help from D'Angelo,The Roots

and Kendrick Lamar.not Joshua Welton.

Well, I've seen every tour from the Revolution onwards and I think 3EG are great.

I think the love/hate for 3EG has more to do with RnB Vs Rock fans than the ability of the girls.

Despite the poor sales, I would love another 3EG album.

Interestingly, the majority of people getting to see the shows are raving about them.

I think the love/hate runs much deeper.

Prince is capable of so much more than this watered down version.

he chooses not to work with anyone who might challenge him.

he works with 20 something chicks, while talented,Miles would have cringed.

Prince just.......whatever.

if you like it good for you.

3rdEyeGirl is a very weak band.Their performances put me to sleep. We all know that Prince has had much better bands in the past.

Agree 100%. When I first saw them the only real weak link to me was Donna (and probably because Prince's musical styles require a versatility she's never been forced to tackle before), but she seems to have gotten a lot better since she joined them. I used to think Josh & Cora were bad, but even they improved over time live playing with Prince. Donna's lasted longer than Kat Dyson hasn't she? To me calling 3EG his worse band is either someone having selective memory or they're judging them on something other than their actual playing.

Change it one more time..

The problem with 3EG's rocking abilities is that the New Power Trio or whatever Prince/Sonny/Michael smokes the living fuck out of them. 3EG could never rock like that. So even on a rock basis, they're Prince Rock Lite.

Thats complete bullshite. He's played with guitarists better than him, keyboardists better than him, drummers much better than him. Thats not his criteria for picking people. A basketball team doesn't need 5 michael jordans. they need people who play well together.

Oh yeah I don't disagree with that. He seems to have his particular vision of how he wants to hear stuff. I thought you were talking about the musical performance aspect, not the writing.

If Wow had been on the Undertaker CD, no one would bat an eylid. Prince is the meastro. As Lezama rightly pointed out. A team is never made up of the best of the best. Its made up of who is working well with each other.

I get it that some people don't dig 3EG, but Prince is enjoying far more creative freedom with them than he has done with half his other bands. 3EG, live at least, have reinvogorated him.

Perhaps. But if Ain't Turnin Around had been on The Undertaker, people would have destroyed it even before Prince's people destroyed it.

It's hard not to bag on the girls no doubt. Christian rock? You can call it the unexpected or you can say what I think Wow, just wow...

The girls shouldn't be let anywhere near iconic songs like Let's Go Crazy, Nothing Compares 2 U , Purple Rain etc.

They probably wouldn't get so much flack if he just let them play strictly songs they created with him . The girls would probably kick more ass but then nobody would pay to see that.

yeah, this seems to be true. After the SNL show i was surprised so many people on my facebook (including professional musicians I follow) loved it as much as they did. I'm not sure why that is.

.

It could be that I'm wrong and that performance was actually awesome.

.

Or maybe my facebook friends were wowed by the fact that the Purple Rain guy really can play guitar. Or they heard beforehand that Prince was secretly really cool, so the next time they saw him doing something "real music"-y, they figured, "this must be that cool Prince I've been hearing about," without thinking if they actually liked what they were hearing. I doubt any of them listen to Prince or 3EG regularly. But among non-fans I think it's becoming a trend to take it for granted that Prince is awesome. I guess I can't complain about that, it's definitely more right than it is wrong.

Well said. These girls can play straight ahead rock but they are not at all funky. They did play well as part of NPG at the show that I saw at Mohegan Sun but Ida moved over to guitar and they had a percussion player, keyboard player and horns. I agree on Joshua Welton. He brings nothing to the table. Listen to D'Angelo's Black Messiah and then AOA or PE. No comparison in production and material. And yes, that late 90s band was weak. I saw 2 shows on the Jam of the Year Tour, the only 2 shows that I've ever seen him do that were only good, not awesome. Luckily he reloaded for the Musicology and W2A tours.

I can see this band getting consumed by christian rock. I think Prince might be going religiously extreme again. I though he was relaxing out of it a bit for a while, but now he has new bible study partners he clearly likes, and we get a song like What If.... Out of the frying pan, into the fire. I wish someone would shake it out of him.

I guess by performing with three women (and not the way he "performed" with three women at a time in the past probably) he seems a little more progressive than some of his very questionable statements and lyrics during the TRC days. I tuned out of Princedom for a while after the MPLS City Pages article showing some of his sexist bullshit. Then again, he clearly controls nearly everything 3EG thinks or does, so maybe my slight optimism is misguided. Fuck it.

Yeah, what a bag of shite. Hmm. A 95% Metacritic score for his new album. When was the last time Prince had such critical consensus behind him? He's already been smoked by D'Angelo. Now Kendrick smoked him too.

I don't dislike 3rd Eye Girl
i like them

maybe some issues are that it's all women

maybe so many have gotten used to for so long that 'big band' experience Prince had

from 2002-onward
