Gotta respect Jesse's honesty regarding the whole Original 7 situation and CD.

I like that 'Verbal Penetration' track of Jesse's, that they played after the interview. Wow, like the funk sound. Sounds real good. I might have to go search for that album he has that song on.

WOW. I'll recap the parts of the interview that deal with O7ven.... Jesse thinks the Condensate album was a terrible album, he was not proud of it and in his opinion, the record is unworthy of the name, The Time. Jesse thinks Prince holds a grudge against a member of The Time who bullied Prince as a child and that's why he didn't allow the band to use the name. Jesse thinks the Condensate album, if it was any good, should have found an audience and sold well regardless of the fact that he quit the band shortly after the record hit store shelves and they could no longer promote the album. Jesse thinks Terry messed up by not just insisting on using The Time name and fighting it out with lawyers later.

Well, I'm not going to bother to counter JJ comments.

Every negative thing he said in the interview is directed at pretty much one guy. I believe, for the first time, I hear a man, in JJ, that knows he might have handled things better and I hope that at some point in the future everybody can get back to making awesome music again. Did JJ, with this interview, shoot himself in the foot again? Maybe, but at least he's talking about what his issues are and maybe it's easier for him to voice his frustrations to CAMEO than it is to The Time. That is, assuming these statements are his actual frustrations and not something else entirely. He has to know that they will hear this interview and I'd like to think that maybe that was his intention and at some point things can get better again. I'll leave it at that. Well, it would be irresponsible NOT to point out who goes unscathed in this interview and question the motivation of JJ, at THIS PARTICULAR TIME, suddenly trashing Flytetyme and brown-nosing a certain individual... Ok shutting up now, not going to get into what appears to be some behind the scenes politicing.... Not getting into what I think this looks like... Nope... logging off the Org now. Shutting my big mouth now! biggrin

^^ Could you elaborate?
Trashing Jam & Lewis, yes; complimentary to Prince (and Morris), yes.
But what do you think it means? Your post is so mysterious.
I think probably the O7 album was more Jam & Lewis, which is not exactly JJ's musical style, so there's a clash there. There's probably an ego clash there too.
I thought he was implying that they should have found some way to use the name (and he's not blaming Prince for not wanting the name used) - by putting out music independently, and/or having Prince's approval and/or involvement - but Lewis did it his way and changed the name (maybe because of Lewis' own personal animosity with Prince).
This is the first interview with JJ where he sounds somewhat reasonable.

I also think that whole digression about having things on YT that the artist did not intend, no matter how much we as fans enjoy it, it's not right - that also seems to support Prince's p.o.v. on recent matters.

Jesse is probably wrong about the reason for Prince not allowing them to use the name The Time since he didn't allow Fdeluxe to use their original name neither..

Quentin Tarantino ended production on his latest film after somebody leaked the script, so, I'm going to try to be careful with my personal speculation. But normally when an artist gives an interview they have a project to promote. A tour, a record, or something. In this case we have Jesse calling into a radio show and provoking drama with O7even and Time fans who gave him sh*t when he quit the project. There was no mention of that solo album he said he was working on when he quit O7even. There was no mention of D'Angelo's record. Nothing about the White House gig. Just a stream of negativity about O7even. His comments are specifically positioned in a way to make his beef with Flytetyme. Are his comments genuine? Is he saying things he hopes will ingratiate him with a certain person? And why now? The timing of his change of heart in suspicious, imo.

Well I personally think Jesse is wrong about one thing and thats that the album is terrible. I love that cd and honestly I like it more than their other cds. I think it is a more complete album. I do miss a little of the extended jams they used to do but really that wasn't them anyway, that was Prince and Morris. To me this is the true Time as they finally got to do an album by truely them and I loved it. I wish their could be more with or without Jesse(of course I would prefer with though).

From what I got from that interview, it didn't sound like he was being negative in a mean way about the O7's album, he pretty much sounded like he said it was not an album good enough for the Time members, because they were known to do quality music. He also pretty much said the Time was a project of Prince that Prince created, and Prince owned the name/creation of the group and the songs. He also mentioned, that often times, when people/or fans in general of the Time would compliment him and the other original Time members for their performance/singing of the songs, that the bottom line is that they were still a project of Prince, working for/under Prince. He didn't seem bitter toward Prince at all in that interview but more or less, just seem to have their differences musically/businesswise. It seems Jesse more or less, in that interview, Jesse seems to feel that maybe the e other members of the Time should have tried to put more effort into trying to hold on to the original name of the group, if they were all going to work together/reunite to do an album with all the original members.

Jesse also somewhat stated in that interview, that he didn't seem fully comfortable embracing compliments from fans/and others regarding the Time's performance/work as their individual, creative vision, because the Time was/is really an extension of Prince's creative, music skills/vision of the group, even though the members of the Time made the group happen, so-to-speak. through Prince's vision. Jesse actually didn't seem bitter at all, but moreso seems to be one that can't fake how he feels about things, and seems to not just accept mediocrity, just for the sake of settling, rather than stepping outside the box. He seemed pretty honest in that interview, but not bitter. I guess sometimes amongst friends/people in general, when you dare to think outside the box or go against the grain, that tends to anger some people. shrug

In a nutshell, it appears Jesse's problem with O7even comes down to him not getting enough songs on the final cut of the album, so he's done/doing everything in his power to trash the project and shade the members he figures he has the least chance of getting money from going forward. I've known a few cats like this in my time. He's looking for a new sponser for 2014. That's really all I see in his comments. JJ is a master of the down-to-earth conversational style. But actions speak louder than words and can reveal a person's true agenda. It's unhealthy behavior to self sabatoge, so something is not right with him. It wasn't that long ago that he totally didn't post his own DEATH NOTICE on his official Facebook page. I wonder if that notice and this interview are a cry for attention.

I don't believe for one second that Jesse is doing well and everything is just fine.

nonsense. a man is entitled his opinion .he bent over backwards to be diplomatic. and he is absolutely right, the album they released does not merit having the Time liable. and while we are at it, neither do most post 88 Prince albums

I somewhat don't agree with you, (bolded part) because it seems anyone can assume that of him. Whatever didn't work out for him with the guys, only Jesse and his former Time member friends would know. As outspoken as he is, he doesn't seem to hold back what he has to say, so I'll just leave it at that, and take his comments in that interview for what it's worth.

It still boggles the mind that Jesse gets all the heat for the O7 debacle. First off Jam & Lewis should've commited actual time and their contacts to the project. Morris should've disbanded "Morris Day & The Time" and focused on the project. Why did a band with two superstar producers in it get such a low level deal? Why didn't Morris disband his side gig(he likes to work easier). This project was half baked from jump. It's a good CD but they weren't ready to go full steam with it under any name.

Link to Morris interview for his point of view.

Because certain people here drink the Morris Day/Time/Wendy/Lisa Koolaid and in their eyes they are all perfect and can never do any wrong. Prince is the root of all evil and when they can't blame Prince for everything, they find another scapegoat, which is now Jesse Johnson.

Bottom line, the power was in the Time's hands to make it happen in 2013, and they fucked it up!!!!

Still happy we got a good cd out of them though. bummer I couldn't see them live.

Jesse Johnson is a very talented guitarist and I respect his talent, but something about him doesn't seem right hmmm He always seems like he's bitter about something. He's always blaming things on other people. There always seems to be drama with him.In 1991,when the band was considering a tour for 'Pandemonium, the guys had to throw him out of the band.Prince was going to have Micki Free be his replacement.I still think that the guys should have hired another guitarist a few years ago and continued with their tour plans for 'Condensate'.Jesse is great, but he's not irreplaceable.

I have to agree. I was prepared to give dude the benefit of the doubt since none of the O7 seems to have been properly committed to the project but he still sounds shady as hell in that interview. It's a shame since he is such a badass guitarist.

People wonder why folk keep ragging on Jesse since we now know there was enough blame to go around? The thing is his flaky a$$ was and still is the only one to run and post nonsense on a public forum during the whole debacle. It was only AFTER he got slammed on FB that he finally came back and told the real reason he bailed.

The other guys spoke about it when they finally had to make a statement or in interviews only because they were asked.

At this point I wouldn't walk across the street to see them for free and that goes for ALL of them.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Is the interview still up? It appears to be a different episode now. Shame as I'd have liked to hear it.

I love Jesse, but I don't what's up with him.

What I will say is that I when I met Jellybean, and brought up the subject of the O7 and what had happened (just a few months after Jesse had quit) his mood changed and he got VERY angry at Jesse for doing what he'd done. Which is understandable, especially since it was a recent occurence.

I guess there's multiple sides to every story, but it's a shame that it went down this way. I think "Condensate" is a decent-to-good album, it has a few great jams but it's not overall a fantastic album, and perhaps it's true that Jesse didn't feel it was good enough.

I do wonder if they had persisted and negotiated with Prince, whether they might have worked something out and be able to use the name, who knows?

This is interesting:

. Jesse thinks Prince holds a grudge against a member of The Time who bullied Prince as a child and that's why he didn't allow the band to use the name.

Do you have that song?

Listening to the interview now - The Time NEED Prince as a leader to keep everyone in shape. That much is obvious. The band falls apart without his leadership.

hmmm I'm not so sure about that.Prince is the one who broke the band up in the first place.Back in 1983 when he fired Jam and Lewis, that was sorta the beginning of the end for them.

As for their current situation,I think that sometimes you just can't go back. Some bands can reunite and keep it going, while others simply can't.I'm just happy we got a great CD from them.

Not according to Jesse. lol

I just think the joke is on them because the band's breaking at first was Prince's fault, but then they collapsed on their own which nobody expected.

When I heard Condensate for the first time, I wasn't expecting What Time Is It or Ice Cream Castle because that was Prince. I was curious to see what these guys could do on their own. I liked the album and thought it was damn good. It was fresh, it was funky, and it was a good album. Listening to it, I got the sense the guys were having fun because there was a good vibe about it. Then there were the TV appearances and I was excited because you had a funk band doing the damn thing! So imagine how I felt when Jesse walked away. As a fan I felt cheated. I was hurt and yes, I took it personal. I wait some 29 years for a full-fledged reunion album and it was all over in a matter of a few months after the project drops? Really? To add insult to injury, Jesse goes and joins D'Angelo' band! Get the kcuf outta here with that noise, son! I have been a fan of Jesse's since his 1985 debut but this was not cool. For the sake of the fans I felt like he should've rode the wave for a minute and then he could jet. But wait a minute: If Jesse was unhappy with the direction of the album, why wait until after it's completed to say something? You mean to tell me that he had no input at all? I call bullshit. I listened to the interview and I heard him ranting and raving and I just shook my head. Why now? Condensate was released in late 2011; it's 2014. There were a lot of high hopes riding on this project and egos ruined it. Can you imagine how big of a tour this would have been? We're not talking album sales, we talking just the tour alone. These guys would've sold out arenas. Instead, it's Morris Day and the Half-Time and it's just not the same. And poor Morris. I think he really wanted this to work because it was opportunity for him to sing fresh material because I know at this point he has got to be tired of the same show day in and day out. At this point, it is what it is.
