is Do Yourself a Favor similar to Prince's unreleased version?

It is absolutely similar. Basically Jesse ripped Prince off his arrangements as a retaliation for Prince taking his credit off a couple of songs in 1984, this with Pepe Willie's blessing. Princevault claims that because a few Prince-written lyrics are missing Jesse's version is not considered to have any input by Prince but this is a delirious statement, as the track is a copycat of Prince's version, and bears little resemblance to the later released original version by 94 East (If You See Me).

For the record, an extended version was released on a maxi, which is really cool (and distances itself from Prince's version by adding portions that are Jesse's creation).

And this thread içs really cool, thanks Oldfriends4sale for all the data razz

4 a while Jesse seemed really angry with Prince, It's hard to believe Prince wouldn't have kept him around, but Prince didn't believe Jesse was frontman material

This is an interesting thread. I did not really know about Mazarati, though the name pops up on a prince forum.
Thanks for this.

"Don't Leave Me Baby" is an excellent song. It's a shame that it's not on the album.

I love this song, without feeling 'dated' it feels like 1986 in the summer

Only thing about Sir Casey Terry's voice is that it doesn't come off strong and hearing the lyrics 4 me isn't always clear

I think Prince wanted to push the androgyny with them, also you see how the guitarist in the bottom right has his hands wrapped around Terrys leg?

I think I can see why Prince had to change their look up, because overall they were dressed like most people/bands during that period.

Should have just given them some ruffled shirts and and paisley things that would have meshed them with the Paisley Park look happening. The visuals would automatically link them with Prince, which is a good thing

Eddie M, Craig Powell, Sheila E in San Francisco 1986

Craig Powell:Guitarist who recorded with The Stylle Band around 1983 and with Mazarati from 1986 to 1989. Later, he and Mazarati-keyboardist Aaron Paul Keith were in the group Wayo Dayo, and Craig performed also with the Westside Band in 2006.

There's a fairytale that says
Once upon a time
Funky music belong 2 people who
Drink cheap wine

CHORUS:
That's why I gotta get on my own way
That's the new golden rule
Enjoy the closest human
I'm much 2 hot 2 be cool
100 miles an hour, baby
That's what it's all about
I need a lover that could slow me down
Somebody that'll make me shout

There's a misconception that says
Everything on the one (Everything on the one)
And my first reaction is just try 2
Have a little fun

CHORUS

There's a fairytale that says
Twice in the Land of Oz
Dorothy made love 2 the Lion
Because because because...

CHORUS

Make me shout
Can U make me shout?

This is Prince's recording of the track he gave to Mazaratti for their 1986 self-titled album. It is fairly close to the released version, containing lyrics inspired by the Wizard Of Oz, among the usual sexual innuendoes.

Strange I have heard a few unreleased Maz songs but never this one. Interesting is it a slow joint?

I was so in love with these men. heart I bought this album when I lived with my strict Jehovah's Witness mom and she found it hidden under my mattress and burned it in the back yard. She said this was demonic. mad Just made me love them more. evillol

Never saw them in concert though... sad

This is the best quality video of 100MPH I've come across thanks to vainandy. :hugs:

"Don't Leave Me Baby" is also the only Paisley Park recorded song that appears on "Mazarati 2" - the second album released on Motown and largely produced by Bernadette Cooper of Klymaxx.

Actually, Brown Mark produced 6 tracks, Bernadette slapped 2 joints in the mix and Michael Sembello started the party on side 1

Mazarati - Mazarati 2 (CD)

Mazarati - Mazarati 2 (Cassette)

Oops! Thanks. I remembered that Bernadette had produced the singles. Wasn't sure about the other tracks. Didn't know Michael Sembello did "Words" - that is cool!

biggrin Those cats wouldn't have lasted ten minutes walking through the streets of my hometown dressed like that.

Howerver..that's showbiz at the time and it's very amusing to look back!

I wonder how they view those times now, and if there's any prospect of an interview or any insight from them...I wonder what they're doing now?

100mph was a good track, it should have gotten pretty high in my opinion..

Jesse Johnsons Revue and Mazarati are 2 of my favs ever. For the folks who can remember, how big was Jesse during that time? Was he playing decent sized stadiums or clubs?

Also I can't find many print interviews on Jesse or Maz did they do press much back in the day?

I remember seeing Jesse back in the day in Baton Rouge at the Centroplex which is a pretty good sized arena. He was touring with Frankie Beverly and Maze and he put on a GREAT show!

Well, Jesse was the opening act for FB & Maze. As a headliner, there's no way he could've toured stadiums back then. Or ever quite honestly. And I was and remain a huge Jesse fan.

Shockadelica is a masterpiece.It's Jesse's best album.My favorites are "Addiction","Do Yourself A Favor","She (I Can't Resist)","Tonight" and "Burn You Up".

I don't think "Baby Let's Kiss" should have been the third single. It's an OK song, but I would have chosen "Addiction" or "Burn You Up".Those songs are hotter!

The single remix of "Baby Let's Kiss" is hot--much better than the album version.

But the 12" version is the real killer mix with the "Be Your Man" groove slipped into the second half.
