Why The Name Change?

Hey Y'all.

I'm still trying to make sense out of this Morris Day and the Time/Original 7ven name change. Why after 30 years of being The Time, they went and changed thier name?

Someone explain this to me--please. I expect this name changing hoo-ha from Princey, not Morris.

I love a Man who:
Wears More Make Up Than Me.
Wears Four Inch Stilleto Boots.
Changes His Name To An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Who Changes His Name Back From An Unpronouncable Symbol.
Oh And Most Importantly, Who Is Sexy Little Drop Of Butterscotch

Because Prince has no involvement in the new album, therefore he declined them the rights to use the name "The Time", which he owns. Same story with The Family, whose new album was released under the group name of fDeluxe.

He doesn't "own" the name "The Family". This discussion was had WAY back. If you look it up - and you can go find the thread - "The Family" is owned by Sean Combs *as in Puff Daddy abd the Family" he Trademarked "The Family" buy itself as well for use as a music group. FDeluxe decided, however, it wasn't worth going up against Prince and his $$ in court. That's a VERY different thing that OWNING it. The Time I can't recall if it is an ownership thing. It might be in that case.

I remember that thread, as I was a part of it. In this thread, I used "own" as shorthand for "the legal right for them to use the name for their musical product is disputed by Prince".

The fact remains that Prince has a trademark for the name "The Family" for usages relating to the sale of music as a physical or digital musical product. He re-registered his trademark at the same time as he did others, including Mazarati, and they can be found under the Paisley Park Enterprises name in the relevant US databases.

Whether it is different or not depends on how you define the term "own". Regardless - Prince's position is that he does indeed "own" the right for them to use the name, and if they did choose to pursue a legal case against him, that would be the position he would take, and it's certainly the position that he made clear to Susannah when he first spoke to them about it, as was initially relayed to me by Wendy:

He APPLIED on The Family. He doesn't own it. There is a difference. I can apply all day long. That doesn't mean I own it. What he has is a branding challenge. That could go either way but it would cost money that I'm sure FDeluxe doesn't want to spend. I am not applying my OWN or Prince's version of ownership. I applying the actual legal ownership of the trademarked name. Which he does not own. As a matter of fact case is still suspended. from: http://www.trademarkia.co...92684.html

So if it's SUSPENDED he doesn't OWN it.

I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about Prince's personal opinion and position. Whether or not his position has any legal merit is not up to you, or I, to decide and is a moot point because you're arguing with me about something I'm not saying. The OP's question has been answered - there is a dispute. At this point in time it's not a legal dispute, possibly for the reason you mentioned.

But, for all intents and purposes, right now, Prince is in control of the usage of the name, for that band and the position to generate revenue from recorded material by that band, under that name. And unless it becomes a legal case and he then loses, what he's doing isn't illegal either. At most, people who disagree with him could call it morally dubious, but the fact remains - the only people with the full understanding and knowledge of the situation are Prince, the bandmembers and their manager Neil.

It's intellectual ownership on the part of the people involved, and I never said anything other than that.
