The Original 7ven Teams Up With Fox Sports To Kick Off NBA Season

Posted on December 26, 2011 by Dan Harr

Outrageously funky band The Original 7ven, formerly known as The Time, is partnering with Fox Sports Net for the hotly-anticipated new NBA season. Beginning December 26th, basketball fans will hear the group’s single “#Trendin” throughout televised regional basketball games, alongside highlights and in special productions for approximately three months. Already a bonafide hit at urban radio, “#Trendin” is the first single off The Original 7ven’s current album, Condensate.

Released October 18th on SRR Records, Condensate debuted in the Top 10 of iTunes’ Soul Albums chart as The Huffington Post awarded the album five stars, noting “Condensate marks a mighty return to the fore for a beloved ensemble that has rightfully earned its own status as music royalty.”

The Philadelphia Daily News gave it an “A,” adding “…the set achieves nirvana…” and People magazine bestowed three out of four stars declaring the band “…still cool.” The Original 7ven stole the show when it opened the Soul Train Awards ceremony last month with an extended performance and appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in late October.

Condensate marks the first time the seven musicians have recorded together in over 21 years and comes 30 after their first time they played together in Minneapolis. The new album delivers the exciting funk/rock/pop that drove the launch of the Minneapolis Sound, infused with a new energy and power.

Curious to know how this will pan out with 6 instead of 7 members.

I really wish they didn't "paint themselves into a corner" with that name. I thought Flyte Tyme would have been much better choice to begin with and now with Jesse drama... I really think 07even was a risky choice.

Anyhoo... I hope they somehow carry on... because I would LOVE to see Jam and Lewis with the group.

I think they got canned during the Controversy tour.... Not sure, but it was their first tour with their first album but I don't think Jam and Lewis performed.

^^Sounds to me, the NBA is just going to be playing #Trendin' for a few months. I don't know if that involves the group itself, although Gloria Estefan filmed a special commercial for Miami using her recent song WEPA. I assume this was already planned way ahead, and not just came up, considering the basketball strike.

Controversy era 1981

And there's live-footage from The (complete) Time on stage in The Roxy, during the Controversy-era. Getting canned while the Controversy Tour was going on doesn't make sense. The Time was just building up their live reputation during that tour and it really flourished during the 1999 Tour. I'm sure that some orgers on this board have witnessed them being there on stage at one of those tours. Some of Jam & Lewis' outside projects were for 1982 albums of Klymaxx ("Wild Girls", "Man In My Life") and the SOS Band ("High Hopes"). Productions which didn't take place during the Controversy Tour.

Not really. The name kind of locks the guys into a commitment with each other. If you go back and look at the interviews they were always kind of tepid when discussing each guy's commitment to the project. They always used very low pressure verbage. In the last interview I saw of them all together, I did notice when Jesse describes O7 as Morris's band. You could kind of tell that there were some type of issues there. I didn't think they were big enough for Jesse to kind of/sort of quit the band on Facebook. I think it will be resolved though and they will contiue to work together.

Edit:

I think the date was December 13, 1982. Funny thing is, it was called the triple threat tour, but Controversy was still playing on the radio... and Girl by the Time was the big RB hit that summer. Vanity 6 did not perform. I saw Prince with the Time and Zapp.

So was Jam and Lewis still in the band at that time?

Yeah, here's the concert date: 12 December, 1982 - Prince Vault , while the vault also documented this:

"...During the 1983's 1999 Tour, The Time were playing as Vanity 6's backing band from behind a curtain, before doing their own hour-long set with only a small pay increase. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who had begun writing songs and production work of their own (working with SOLAR to produce Klymaxx and with Tabu Records to produce the S.O.S. Band), were stranded in Atlanta by a blizzard and failed to make it to a Time concert in San Antonio. As result Jerome had to mime playing bass guitar on stage while Prince played Lewis' part off stage, and Lisa stood in for Jimmy Jam. Subsequently, the duo were fined and then fired after the tour finished..." ( The Time - Prince Vault )

As for the singles of "Controversy" and "Girl" getting airplay, i guess that radio singles somewhat had a longer endurance in the charts at that time?

Yeah, with a few off-dates, Zapp was indeed most of the time on the bill during the Controversy Tour

I've read an interview with Jimmy Jam where he tells about him and The Time being interviewed on a radio stations during the Controversy Tour, and also tells about some conflicts which they had with Zapp. The earlier posted stage photo of The Time shows Jesse in a black suit, and the backdrop of the street-scene of the group their first album's front cover. Jesse's outfit during the 1999 Tour was mainly the pink suit.

Thanks for the link. I found my concert. It was December 28, 1981. It was in Toledo, OH at the Sports Arena and had Zapp and the Time.

So I guess I did see the O7 back then. Since they were still together in 1982.

So does this date work better for Girl being a big hit that previous summer and Controversy being the hot radio hit?

Roger really turned it out. More Bounce to the Ounce was the big hit. An extended play. Dance Floor, and Roger's cover of Marvin Gaye's I heard it through the Grapevine. Aww, man that was a tight set!

Seriously we were dancing on our chairs. That concert... I think I had 3 or 4 row seats and I had to stand all night in my chair. Which was okay because we were shaking our asses that night.

some of my girls were acting all sophisticated rolleyes and did not push through the crowds to get closer seats. (the seats were not reserved.) and so some of them sat up in the stands while I had floor seats with the rest.

guess who was the lucky ones? It turns out that one of my girls dad was an off duty cop who was working security. and yep... they got to go back stage. I forget who they talked to.... I think it was members of the Time and someone gave my friend a hug.

My friend said she saw Prince who was shy and stood away from them and wathced... and she mentioned how short he was. I mean she brought it up out of the blue. This was before we all knew just how short Prince was so it really made an impression on her.

Cymone had to go to the ER that night after the concert for dehydration. My mom worked at a hospital and the news flew through her little hospital that a rock star was brought in to the ER. Later our local news reported on it and it turned out to be Andre Cymone.

Like I said fun times.

Starting this week, the Original 7ven (formerly known as the Time) have partnered with Fox Sports Net to showcase their single "#Trendin'" throughout televised regional NBA games, along with highlights and special productions for the next three months.

"We're such huge sports fans, and I can speak for everyone in the group and say basketball is our favorite sport," said James "Jimmy Jam" Harris, producer and keyboardist for the group. "The song has gotten a lot of attention, and we're happy it's going to be used for the NBA."

"Trendin'" is the first single off the Original 7ven's CD "Condensate," which marks the first time the seven Time musicians -- Harris, lead singer Morris Day, bassist Terry Lewis, drummer Jellybean Johnson, keyboardist Monte Moir, percussionist Jerome Benton and guitarist Jesse Johnson -- have recorded together in more than 21 years. It was a 2008 performance at the Grammy Awards, where the band performed its smash hit "Jungle Love" with Rihanna, that they considered returning to the studio.

"We were always talking about recording music because we all hung out, but it wasn't until that performance that we got serious about it," said Harris, who produced hits for Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Boyz II Men. "It's like when you see an old friend and say you're going to have dinner but never do. In this case, at the Grammys, we set the date and we signed on and we got the album together."

And now the biggest challenge is getting people to understand the name of the band. Prince, who created the band in the 1980s, has refused to allow them to perform using the name "The Time."

"We've heard from people close to Prince that say he loves the new CD and fully supports what we're doing, oh, except for letting us have the name, but we're not mad about that," said Harris, whose group started out touring as Prince's opening act. "So our biggest challenge is getting people to realize we're the same band and we have a new album out."

After appearances on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in October and opening the Soul Train Music Awards in November, the band will start heading east to New York for a media tour, as positive word of mouth has helped push the single and CD up the charts.

"It's like old times with the band, the camaraderie and the arguments, all the things you have with a family," Harris said. "Now we've got to get people to understand our name. It's like some 'Jeopardy!' question: 'Who is the only musical group in history to re-form with all its original members and use a new name?' Answer: Original 7ven."

Wrong. They weren't canned on the Controversy tour. Jam and Lewis toured with the band through the end of the 1999 tour. Then they were let go. Learn your history before making such claims over here.
