Original 7ven was a nostalgic good Time in homecoming concert

Morris Day condensates at the State/ Star Tribune photos by Tom Wallace

Please check your clocks.

On the night on which we set our clocks back an hour, Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and company tried to turn back time by 30 years.

The Original 7ven — the band formerly known as the Time — reunited in their hometown Saturday night at the State Theatre to celebrate the release of their first album in 21 years. Instead of a concert showcasing new material (we got one song and snippets of one or two others), it was "Cool," "777-9311" and "The Bird." It was an evening of stylish suits, Minneapolis Sound funk and nostalgic fun.

But, as entertaining as the 90-minute performance was, it lacked the precision, attitude and hunger of the original Time and the crispness, consistency and spirit of this lineup’s 2008 comeback concert at the Hotel Minneapolis. Saturday’s under-rehearsed show even missed the free-wheeling party vibe that Morris Day & the Time manifested at the Minnesota State Fair in August.

Sorry to confuse you. Day fronts two different versions of the same band. He calls one the "touring band" (his group since 1996, with two other founding members but not Jam and Lewis, who were too busy producing hits for Janet Jackson and others) and the other "the originals" (featuring the seven guys Prince put together as the Time in 1981). Since Prince owns the rights to the name "the Time," the Minneapolis men who made the moniker famous were forced to use a different appelation for this year’s album, "Condensate."

The new name, combined with steep ticket prices (ranging from $53 to $83) and Day’s recent free State Fair appearance, resulted in more empty than occupied seats at the State Theatre. But the fans — who, like the performers, were middle-aged — got excited whenever Day decided to turn it on, Jesse Johnson unleashed his wondrous guitar or the band found an early ’80s groove that Prince had composed for them.

Jerome Benton, Day’s valet, was the only one who consistently lit up the stage. His nonstop energy, swiveling hips and Pepsodent smile were infectious. Johnson, with his impassive face and body language, looked bored the entire night even when he played some ferocious guitar (everything from Jimi Hendrix-ian rock to Buddy Guy-evoking blues to Princely funk).

At 53, Day, a lothario for life, seemed to be either pacing himself or coasting much of the gig. But he turned it out on the new single "#Trendin," "Jungle Love" and especially "Jerk Out," when he and Benton became dancing fools of days gone by.

The emotional high point was the encore of "The Bird," which the Time famously performed in Prince’s movie "Purple Rain." On Saturday, the Original 7ven ("y’ll can call us the Time if you want," Jam said) invited several fans onstage to flap their arms bird-style — OK, dance — with Day, Benton and the boys. One of the guests looked a great deal like Prince (except he was taller and his mouth bigger); when Day shouted "chili sauce" and faux Prince did the slick sliding steps along with the original Time members, it seemed so cool.

Of course, the appearance of this playful imposter evoked memories of how Prince had rehearsed the Time with the painstaking meticulousness of a drill sergeant. And, disappointingly, on this homecoming night, the Original 7ven didn’t live up to its birthright all of the Time.

Here is the Original 7ven's set list from Saturday:

intro (including snippet of new Strawberry Lake)/ Get It Up/ Cool/ Wild and Loose/ 777-9311/ The Stick/ Blondie/ Jesse Johnson guitar workout/ Fishnet/ Oak Tree (Morris Day solo hit)/ Jerk Out/ The Skillet/ Be Your Man (Jesse Johnson solo hit)/ Can You Help Me (Jesse Johnson solo hit)/ #Trendin/ Ice Cream Castles/ Gigolos Get Lonely Too/ The Walk/ The Bird ENCORE Jungle Love

^^ Doesn't sound like the best review, and that's coming from good ol' Jon Bream. And did I imagine it, or was he almost saying that the Morris Day & The Time show was better than this one? confused

What I do know is that these guys need to work in a lot more new material into their set to help really establish a huge difference between the two bands. The touring band has been touring in a lot of these same cities for years now and some people may not feel the need to hear everything one more time (even though these are the original guys, which is something I think only us hardcores really care about). Why not play most or all of Strawberry Lake instead of a snippet? With the amount of material they have, they should easily be able to do more than a 90-minute show. It could easily go 2 hours, especially if they wanna incorporate the new music.

so no new stuff. It seems like they would WANT to play the music THEY made, Guess not. I guess they like the Prince music better. That sucks. I will pass this tour if they dont play some newer stuff. I have seem Morris with this show a dozen times and not really wanting to see it again. We need something new

The setlist from LA featured more new material and Jesse also did 'Free World' if I remember correctly. The confusion between the two band line ups is going to be an issue if they don't clarify it. Morris Day & The Time played BB Kings in NYC this past July and nobody was sure which line up was coming because we knew a CD was on the horizon. still waiting this group to hit NYC as Jellybean said they would.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
