I went to the 10pm show and thought I'd share a review of sorts.

I had a seat at the table at the stage but then 2 friends decided to come along so I was able to get 3 seats at one of the tables in the center, like 2 tables from the stage (table 25) so it was still an amazing location.

I came to the 2nd show. The band:

• FAMILIAR FACES:
  • Sheila E: Band leader, lead vocals, timbales and drums
  • Peter Michael Escovedo one of her brothers on drum kit; nice to see him behind the traps and playing with big sister
  • Raymond (sp?) McKinley, her longtime bass player and MD
  • Eddie M---yes THAT Eddie "blow you horn, grandson" Minnenfield on Sax
  • Debbie (Bryant?) on background vocals
• SOME NEWER CATS:
  • A talented guy on trumpet & trombone but I didn't catch his name, sorry; I think hes played with her for a while now
  • "Nate", the funky white boy" guitar (he played with her the last show a few months ago but otherwise is pretty new to her band)
  • 2 other guys on Keyboards (Nice to see double keys in the band) but I couldn't catch their names; I think one was Brandon
• SPECIAL "CAMEOS"
  
  • Lynn Mabry: came out at the end and blew us away with some imrpov vocals on Thank you fa letting be mice Elf again, One Nation and some other stuff. My friend noticed at one point earlier she was singing backgrounds behind the stage too.
• Juan Escovedo came out to play drums when Peter Michael did "I LIke It" and also Timbales on another song

This was my 3rd time seeing Sheila do her st at Yoshi's. It's really a great place to see a concert. She was wearing gold sequin outfit, either tank top and matching skirt or a dress. Looked HOT!

Came out and opened with Love Bizarre, starting with the A, A, A, ...... C cues etc.

I love her current arrangement with the extra horn parts, the Strawberry, Whipped Cream cues etc. If you payed close attention, and knew the arrangement like I do (obsess much??), you'd notice the band made a mistake a couple times. I think they either went into the change too soon, before Sheila was ready with the vocals..... and they tried to do it again and I forget if they did it too soon again or if Sheila went into the change and they didn't follow........ but whatever.... the average person would not have noticed unless you were staring at the bass player who was signaling the band. Considering she said they never really rehearsed for this last minute show except at sound check, it's shocking this was the only "slip up"! In fact, all the musicians onstage were pretty much virtuoso level players who all were amazing in their own right. (Something similar happened at the last show, so I guess this change is confusing! There used to be a youtube video of it you could watch).

Then on to Oliver's House. Love how funky she is doing now, and with 2 keyboards they really get the funky, Minneapolis synth horns going! Ironically, I thought the keyboard player from last time did it slightly better and he was on keys all by himself..... but nevertheless, great to hear this song back in the mix.

I'm trying to remember what came next. The order might be a litlte messed up but she did Holly Rock, and the trombone player did an excellent solo instead of Eddie doing the sax solo.

OH I FORGOT TO MENTION ABOVE.... during Love Bizarre Sheila and Eddie were doing the dance moves from when they did this in Krush Groove!

Then there was a set to promote the new E Family CD. Peter Michael stepped out from behind the drums to sing lead, while Juan came up to play drums. Sheila, Eddie and Debbie did the background vocals, and Sheila did her rap. It sounded great, and am pretty sure it was all live no backing tracks, and they faithfully reproduced the record which they are playing regularly here in SF on KBLX. I have to say it's very catchy, and probably one of her best "pop" songs in a long time. though it's more mid tempo rather than a funk jam.

They did another song form the CD which I can't remember right now (too lazy to go in the other room and get it), more of a Latin feel song with Santanna like guitar parts.

They also did the gospel-ish "All Round" and Sheila came into the audience and danced with people and even came to my table and put the mic in front of my friend

Then Sheila took the drum kit and said they had done funk, jazz even gospel, and now were going to do rock. She laid down a rock beat and launched into "Water of Life" which was actually pretty rocking (and I dont like rock!). She was doing Steven Tyler type screams throughout which was pretty cool actually.

Then Sheila and Peter Michael did this thing where PM played on this percussion "box" and Sheila used a water bottle to make up beats as she said they did when they were kids. She ended up using sticks to play whatever.....the floor, the speaker, people' beer bottles, the menu at the table. Really showed how talented she is, she can make music out of ANYTHING. She did this funny thing where the woman at the table had Louis Vuitton purse and she kinda took it and acted like she was keeping and strutted with it, kinda MOrris Day-like or how she used to act in the Toy Box number from back in the day. It was cute.

She introduced the band and let everyone take pretty long solos which was cool because like I said above, all of the were such great players you got chills hearing each person go off on their own instrument, not the least of which when Debbie the background singer improved some gospel like stuff and too it to church!

Then she brought up Lynn as I mentioned before. Lynn's voice is so great, it's shocking she wasn't singing the whole night. BUt perhaps that's the point, it would've overpowered everyone else? I dont know, because Lynn has done a lot of backing gigs, but to hear her belt it out you were like "why were you not onstage all night, girl??" Such talent!

At some point, Sheila went over and took the trumpet and acted like she was going to play it. Then she actually DID play it and started playing some quick riff. Now I don't play wind instruments, so it's possible what she did was very basic,...... but I know not anyne can just pick up a trumpte or flute and get ANY sound out of it, and she got an actual riff going doing quick note changes and it sounded on key! Then she said she had too much lipstick on and the mouthpiece was the wrong size. SHe went over to the mic and in one of her "voices' was like "That's right... I play EVERYTHING!!" again in a facetious, kinda funny way.

Then she took the bass, and started to play that. She was alternating playing it like a percussion instrument, and trying to do some slapping and popping, which she did a few times, but then said her nails were too long. Again back to the maike,, "that's right I play EVERYTHANG!

Then the guitar. She got the guitar, got on the wah wah pedal, and started doing a funky chicken scratch ryhythm. She did the guitar the longest. "I Play everythign"

Then she took Eddie's sax, lifted it for asec, but then put it back, and was like "That's right... I DON"T Play everything!" IT was really cool. I love seeing her play other instruments that we usually don't see.

Of course she ended with The GLamorous Life. Nate did the dramatic long guitar intro which my friend said sounded very Pink Floyd like (I woudln't know!). It was a great rendition, though she skipped the middle verse. Nice percussion solo at the end but she didn't over do it or drag it out too long.

I was surprised there wasn't an encore but she really was loose and stretched out the solos so perhaps they had to stop.

Having seen her play Yoshi's 3 times in the last year or so, I'd say this was like a "9". If you'd never seen her before you'd think OMG this was UNBELIEVABLE (my friends thought that). But usually Sheila is like an 11 or 12 out of 10, so this was like a 9 for me. Hard to explain.......perhaps someone else who was there can chime in.

Anyway, if you EVER have the chance to see Sheila do her solo set. you MUST GO!!!

No one puts on a better show.

Terrific review!! Sounds like hella fun!! I wish she'd play the mid-Atlantic area at some point.

That's a terrific review! Felt like I was there...which I was twice before.

Glad y'all liked it. I was afraid I went on too much.

I forgot to mention that at the end of Holly Rock, she went into Oakland Stroke, doing the dance too etc.
