Is Esperanza Spalding a first?

She hasn't worked as closely with Prince as his other "protegee's" but he's definitely a mentor to her -- is she the first to (so far) actually having some commercial fame on her own??

Here's what she just said about Prince:

Spalding recently supported Prince, whom she calls “a dear friend,” on his “Welcome 2 America” tour. “Anything I do with Prince is always a blast, whether it’s jamming in his basement or having a conversation about genetic biology,” she said before joining him in December. “I’m sure this will be no different. He’s a totally fun character and an incredible musician, and we’re just going to rock out and it’s going to be beautiful.”

Esperenza was making music and having mild success long before her friendship with Prince. Still, her association with him can not have done her any harm in terms of exposure to a wider audience.

I like her a lot.

They should be delighted. Best New Artist is generally the kiss of death. lol

Not that that will happen to Esperanza. It isn't like she's the typical flash-in-the-pan pop star.

When my Vice-Principal heard that I was going to see Prince, she said she would have gone if she had known Esperanza Spalding was opening for him. Janice is not someone who cares about Prince. She's a jazz fan and loves her music. She was really excited to hear what I thought about her performance.

There was massive buzz about her before her association with Prince. She's probably strictly-speaking more of a "musical genius" than he ever was and is extremely successful and respected in her own right. Prince didn't have the balls or the pull to team up with anyone like this earlier in his career (and, to be honest, he hasn't exactly teamed up with her now...).

Nora Jones and Alicia Keys aren't "protege's" either but I'd say these are similar success stories.

Prince is definitely a mentor to Esperanza Spalding?

Her opening for Prince may be interesting for her so that people outside the jazz circles knows about her talent.

Other than that, she's a Berklee bachelor and since very young she was also a teacher there.

As a musician, and I mean harmony knowledge and deep study of the instrument, Prince is a fucking poor man compared to her.

He's incredibly talented as an all-in-one (multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer, dancer, performer, fancy lesbian...) but he can't touch a jazz musician.

Wow dude I think Spalding is mad talented but goodness you think she is a musical genius!!!

In addtion, you have no way of knowing if P has recorded anything with her and as a younger artist who would P have teamed up with? Maybe some of you have a selective memory but back in the day everybody was not always riding P's jock. P tries to do a good thing and expose a really good artist to a larger audience and as usual someone on this board finds a way to shit on it.
