The Time Mobile, Al October 23, 2010 review

I went and saw the Time at the Greater Gulf State Fair in Mobile, AL on October 23, 2010. This was my 4th show of the year and my 56th overall.

The day started way too early for me. I didn't sleep worth a crap and then I had to get up 3 hours early to get ready for Jordan's party. I felt like crap and was going to call them and tell them I wasn't coming till the afternoon. I sucked it up and made it to the party. Little man had a big turn out for his second birthday party. Ashley did a great job.

Well the party was only suppose to last 2 hours, but it was almost 5 1/2 hours before the last guest left. This put us leaving Jason's house around 4:30 p.m. and we were suppose to meet the fellas at 5:45 p.m. at their hotel for lobby call. Jason made good time, but he started off in the wrong direction on the interstate and then mapquest took us the scenic route to their hotel. We missed them by less than 5 minutes and actually saw the van taking them to the gig as we pulled up. We went to the Fair grounds and went to the area behind the stage. Jeff saw us at the fence and came and talked to us. Ashley called Jellybean and he got us backstage. We mingled with the fellas and caught up. Good to see my man Jaybe who I wasn't expecting to see. Jordan was a big hit and got his picture made with most of the fellas

Well on to the show

Here is the line up

Morris Day-Vocals and Cool

Jellybean Johnson-Drums

Monte Moir-Keyboards

Tori "Freak Juice" Ruffin-Guitar

Ricky "Freeze" Smith-Bass

Jeff McNeely-Keyboards

Sylvester Donald-valet and dancer

Here is the set list with my comments to follow.

1. DAT Intro

2. Skillet

3. Cool

4.Get it up

5. Pandemonium

6. Chocolate

7. Wild and Loose

8. The Stick

9. Blondie

10. My Drawers

11. Fishnet

12. The Oak Tree

13. Jerk Out

14. 777-9311

15. Girl- short instrumental

16. Sometimes I get lonely- one verse by Morris off stage

17. Gigolos get lonely too

18. If the Kid can't make you come

19. Ice Cream Castles

20. The Walk

21. The Bird

Encore

21 Tricky!!!!

22. Jungle Love

The band was introduced. Controversy was played over the sound system and the crowd got hyped. The Dat intro(extended dance mix) played snippets of the band's hits. The band took the stage. Jellybean started the beat to Skillet while Morris and Sly hit the stage. We were watching from the left hand side of the stage. Great view of the guys out front and of Jeff and Bean on the side. The show started right around 7 p.m. and lasted 90 minutes. Everybody got the hand gestures down for Cool. Get it up followed with a double shot from 1990 with Pandemonium and Chocolate. "What time is it?" asked Morris as Wild and loose the opening track from the 1982 LP was next. The Stick from the debut album kept the party going. One of my favorite parts of the show. The rock section. Blondie and My Drawers kicks ass. Tori laid down some nice licks. Morris's two biggest solo hit. Fishnet and The Oak Tree continued the show along with the group's biggest hit Jerk out. 777-9311 is always a highlight. Bean broke it down like no one else can and Tori went off.

Ashley had taken Jordan backstage as he was getting restless. The ballad section was next. An instrumental piece of Girl was played followed by Sometimes I get lonely. Morris sang the first verse off stage. Hence the title of the review. Jason's favorite Time song Gigolos get lonely too ended this part of the show. When if the Kid can't make you come started. Jason exited the stage and took over Jordan duties from Ashley. She came back to where I was to watch the rest of the show. This is my least favorite part of the show anyway and tonight was pretty uninspired from a visual standpoint. The band sounded great as always, but the crowd participation was subpar. The lady they got on stage pretty much wasn't into it. When they do Ice Cream castles I want some eye candy and aside from the cute blond on the end they were pretty much lacking in this department. I think Ashley should have got out there, but she wasn't having it. The two new dances followed. The Walk and the conclusion of the regular set, The Bird. Again I was trying to get Ashley up there and she was trying to get me to do the same, but neither one of us were drinking at this point so it didn't happen. The band left the stage except for Freeze and Jellybean. Then the highlight of the night for me happened. They started laying down the beat to Tricky!!! Now I've seen these guys enuff to catch almost any little change they might make to the show like a different dance move or pose. So to throw in a song that I haven't seen them play live is a real treat. The keys came in and then Tori. That shit was funky as hell. Morris came back to the stage and sang the "when I look in the mirror " line. The band closed the show with Jungle love.

We went backstage after the show and hung out. Jordan got more pictures including one with Morris. We grabbed some grub and then left the Fair. We met Jellybean at the hotel. we went out for some more food, had a few drinks and hung out. Good times. Another great show!! This is why I keep going. Props to all the fellas for their great hospitality, especially Jellybean for getting us into the show and hanging out with us afterwards. Let's hope I don't have to wait too long for the next show

My man Rhastus always has the dope reviews and shares the C-O-O-L times that he has with the fellas from The Time. Good looking out as always, brother. Of course I am jealous of the 4 shows u have seen this year, but I am sure the East Coast's TIME will come soon.

Saw the guys last Friday (10/29) at the R&B explosion in Chicago. Same set, except they didn't do Ice Cream Castles. My first time seeing them do Tricky as well. I've seen the original time, and 1\2 time many times, but this was my first time seeing what I will now call the 1/4 time (no jerome). I thought the show was tight, but sorry just not feeling this Sylvester cat. Jerome doesn't bring anything to the table musically I understand, but he adds much to the show performance wise.

Also, seems like Tori's Guitar just wasn't turned up volume wise that night because we've all seen Tori rip it! Overall good show, but the lineup just doesn't compare to the original lineup especially now that Jesse does his min-set as part of the show....

Cuz ain't nobody bad...Like Me!!!!

Good review, Rhastus! I would love to hear them do Tricky live! This is not the first time around this time of year you've had to "suck it up" and go and it seems like every time you do, you have a good time and we get to hear about it! Thanks for the insight!
