LOL @ Brownmark. He was very skilled and proficient, but he wasn't funky.

Sonny T. was the funkiest.

Levi was very talented on bass and guitar.

Larry Graham was funky, too.

You think I've not heard that a million times? He ain't that funky. He certainly rates below seasoned people like Sonny T. and Larry Graham.

I guess I'd be in the Larry / Mark camp....but was surprised that Rhonda got no love yet on this thread.

BIG fan of Andre's....but I always felt he (with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 tracks of his 1st solo album) ever really got to showcase his full talent on bass.

So much of his time with P, it's hard to say who played what.

I think Prince is his own funkiest bass player. shrug

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I prefer Andre, Sonny T, and Josh.

I love funk but a bass player needs to be able to play soft and subtle tones too. (Listen to Andre on his slow jam, Red Light)

I would love to hear Prince play with Derek "D.O.A." Allen. That dude is the rare player that can play funk but also handle jazz elements.

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams.

Sonny wasTHE funkiest. If you saw him out at some of PP house parties you'd know. I LOVE Rhonda as a player, but she's got a different vibe that has some funk on top...just not as funky as Sonny, Larry and Mark. Levi had a rock vibe to me with his pick playing. Nothing wrong with that tho. I think Prince is good but not great on bass.

Sonny T

Brownmark

Rhonda Smith

My FAVORITE though is Brownmark, that dude had that fat, tasty, funk and made the Revolution the best Prince band in history.

Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

That's actually why I like her so much. She's got layers of stuff goin' on.

Completely agree

It's hard to say how technically gifted he was but he can most definitely thump out some grooves.

Because I don't actually consider Larry Graham a "Prince bass player". Larry Graham was Larry Graham a long time before he ever played with Prince. The rest of the people who've played bass for Prince, I'd never heard of them prior to that gig.
