i hope this really happens

It's happening. It's a slow process because Paul works. Gotta pay the bills. He tours with Kenny Loggins, and Oleta Adams. Sometimes that obviously punches into his Fdeluxe time, but he does work on the album a bit on the road, and Susannah does the same thing. (They are both producers on the album.) We've waited this long, we can wait a few more months. My hope, and belief, is that it will be done this year.

were you a Family fan? All the original folks are together here. Collaboration makes some fine, fine music. Plus those solo cds were 20 some years ago.

a Family fan? well, I'm a fan of their first album. but we all know that the members of the group themselves had almost no input, so why would we think a new CD created by them would be any good?

Firstly - how do you know they had no input? Part of the "sound" is how Paul and Sus's voice work together. Part of it is Eric's horn - and I believe he did those parts himself. Secondly - I've heard two tracks, and so far I hear them creating that sound with an updated feel and strong writing and playing. So why not? I guess the opposite question is why you would assume it wouldn't be- especially if your exposure to any of their solo stuff is 25 years old.

what, you haven't heard the stories about how Prince made Paul sing the songs just like him?

second, if you keep reading, you'll see that I have had exposure to their solo stuff. Paul's and Eric's, at least. it really does nothing for me at all.

as far as their new stuff as F Deluxe, I'm not really sure why I'm supposed to be all excited about it in the first place? their only album perviously was a Prince album in everything but name and clearly this one is not. I'm not saying I won't like it. But based on that fact and that I'm not excited about their solo work, I don't know why I'm supposed to be jumping up and down for joy about them doing something new. I might like it, I might not. But my expectations for it are zilch.

Yeah, I wasn't holding out too much hope either till I heard the rough cut for @8. It seems to me that they are really trying to emulate what someone called "the Classic Family sound" but it sounds pretty fresh.

Obviously this new Family record will be a good part nostalgia. I don't think that anyone other than pretty serious P fans will end up buying it anyways. As for not liking St. Paul's solo stuff, come on, EVERYBODY loves Rich Man ha ha ha.

you asked why I assumed it wouldn't be. based on the fact that the only thing we've heard from them as a group is an album written, produced, and practically performed by Prince 25 years ago. none of those elements are here. why WOULD i be interested? just because it's Paul and Susannah and Eric? it might be wonderful, but I have absolutely no basis to care until I hear it, if I even bother at all. shrug

eh, I dunno. I mean, Paul's the creative force behind it, right? In college, I had a friend who had some of his stuff and liked him and I'm going through his CD's/tapes one day, and I'm like "WTF?! St. Paul?!" I had no idea he had a solo career. He had no idea he was a former Prince "protege." He played me some of his solo stuff. Can't say I hold out much hope for Fam 2.0

St Paul had a song on the soundtrack for the first Ninja Turtles movie.

I have great expectations for this album, it sounds like it's gonna be great!

Now i have to admit that i was really wondering WHY they do it: they never really were a band except for a photo session, the filming of a video, a few rehearsals and one concert, and i just couldn't see any other reason than fun and maybe earn a little money out of it. Now anything involving Eric has to be just great!

I can't understand either why Prince wouldn't let them use the name, but in a sense it's more logical that they take another name since they compose new material and go beyond the nostalgia trip: The Family was Prince. F-Deluxe is Paul, Susannah, Eric, Jellybean & Jerome. Now the question is, since Miko lives in Spain: WHO's gonna play the guitar? lol

It would be fun if they toured with C.O.E.D. & The Time biggrin

Wow. That sounds like a plan. As long as Rich Man is on it, too. I love the live album he did with The Minneapolis Allstars - Live At The Quest. The Family and Madhouse tracks are killer. Sadly, I just found out recently that Steve Raitt died. rose

St. Paul has one CD left. But it's really expensive.

St. Paul - lead vocals and bass (www.StPaulMusic.com)
Ricky Peterson - keys and vocals (www.RickyPeterson.com)
Eric Leeds - sax
Dave Berry - guitar

Steve Raitte - vocals
Jason Peterson - background vocals
Robert "Cubby Colby" - live engineer

I doubt they can/want to spend thousands of $ in expensive Hollywood lawyers. They'd lose more money out of this than whatever they'll earn with the new album confused

And besides, don't forget that the 5 of them all basically owe their whole career as it is to Prince, not to mention that Paul let the whole project down back in 1985 (so he kind of owes one to Prince in this case)... I'm not saying none of them would ever have achieved anything, but it's likely that they wouldn't have done as many things and earned as much money if The Time, The Family, The Revolution and Prince hadn't been on their resumes. Therefore it wouldn't be fair to do it if P. doesn't want them to, no matter how silly and unjustified it is that he doesn't.

isn't there also the fact that if you don't actively use a trademark, your claim to it expires after a certain amount of time? and I don't remember Puff Daddy running into any trouble for using the name back during one of Prince's especially litigious moods.

Because Prince is the type who hold grudges if he felt someone did him wrong. I think Wendy or Lisa or one of them said on their twitter while back that Paul and Prince had barely spoken to each other for the last 25 years. perhaps prince is still mad of how Paul balked out of the band.

Ever go through a litigation with someone known to be vengeful and have a stable of lawyers?
Didn't think so.

@ladygirl. 25 years later Prince can't get over that a band who he never let go on the road broke up cause they were tired of sitting in their over-rehearsed asses in Chanhassen?
Isn't there a point in time some therapy might come in handy? wink
