The official 'I got my Verbal Penetration' thread!

Well, today I went to Best Buy. They said they'll have the album in tomorrow! So tomorrow morning I'll be headed there straight away to go get it! I thought we could all post pictures of ourselves holding the album to show Jesse that we support him!

Cut em Jesse!!

Well, as it turns out, Best Buy didn't have the album.

The search continues! I'll be checking FYE, Barnes & Noble next.

Yeah I ordered mine from Barnes and nobles online just so I won't have to go through the frustration of none of the stores having it and today I got an email saying the release has been delayed sad

I got mine, biggrin

These days it's not that often that you can buy a cd and just chill all the way through. Well done Jesse!

I ended up ordering it from Amazon. But it's coming from the US so it may take a couple of weeks to get here.

Nope, from one of the usual sources. I fully admit to previewing albums. Jesse or not, I'm not putting money out on something that I might not like. And believe me, if I don't like it, I ain't keeping the download. It's going the way of the Trash Bin a.s.a.p.

I've still not listened to it yet. I might tonight. I have some alone time this evening.

Jesse has outdone himself. It does tower over all of his earlier work and shows how prolific he truly is as a composer, producer, and instrumentalist. While I love the fact that he stretches out over a double disc set, there is some material here that lacks muscial substance or artistic relevance to justify 2 full discs - which is amplified by the fact that it is all surrounded by superior material. It is not Emancipation or Sign O the Times - but it is definitely Jesse's Electric Ladyland.

As expected, there is still some of the Hendrix influence - it just isnt as overt as it was on Bare My Naked Soul. Tracks like Reflections are reminisent of something you coulnd find on Axis Bold as Love. The backtracking psychedelic segues and jazz elements keep the Electric Ladyland vibe throughout. The seemingly obligatory social commentary in the form of spoken words poems are so long and preachy that they bring Verbal Penetration's magic carpet ride to a screaching halt as it begins to sound like some kind of funky self-help CD with some really exceptional background music - see if you can make it all the way through Meditation 02: Self Love...I haven't yet.

In the Key of Nudity had initially given my some faith that Jesse wouldnt go an entire 2 disc set without putting some real stank on it- you know, that hard funk kind. But if I every heard an instrumental that needed some lyrics badly, this is it. The solo - like every other one on the record - is brief but excellent. It - like so much of the album - is an artistic indulgence. You just have to be down with that kind of thing - or not. And that is how some will miss this near-masterpiece.

No matter what he does, the comparisons to Prince are unavoidable. Jesse isnt Prince. That is plain on this record. But he is definitely one of a few artists who could even begin to fathom being mentioned in the same breath with Prince. I am glad I got it for free - but it is worth picking up.
