Texas Southern University took Tavis Smiley's name off their School of Communication after they say he didn't follow through on his promise to give $1 million and raise $1 million. He donated $50K and raised another $250K but the university said that wasn't the deal. Tavis was supposed to pay his $1 million over 5 years (starting in 2004) but wanted to expand it to 10 years and get out of raising the other $1 million altogether.

Tavis said the previous president, Pricilla Slade, had promised him she'd name it after him even if he didn't donate a dime (which is NOT how universities do these things). Of course, she got indicted a few years ago for spending $millions of university money on her home (I think she was found not guilty, though or maybe it was a mistrial). It was Slade's misdeeds that, in part, prompted Tavis to re-think his position.

Not a pretty situation for anyone, but no one's all that mad at each other either. Here's a link:
