"Do Yourself A Favor" by Jesse Johnson (1986)

We've heard the versions by Prince and Pepe Willie, but Jesse's version is my favorite:

btw,to those of you who don't have it....Jesse's 'Shockadelica' album is EXCELLENT!

Jesse has said that Prince wanted The Time to record this song for one of their albums. It was considered for both 'What Time Is It' and 'Ice Cream Castles'.I think it would have worked really well on the latter, which lacks truly great songs anyway.

It's credited 2 JESSE and PEPE on the "SHOCKADELICA" album, but was it written by PRINCE? or all 3?

That's a good question.Prince recorded his version in 1982 and it is drastically different than Pepe's original version from 1975.Jesse's version used the same arrangement that Prince came up with, but he didn't credit Prince at all.

I like Prince's and Pepe's versions the best. Jesse's is a bit flat to me. It's cool, but Pepe's is so funky and Prince's is just fun. I could have seen the Time doing it as well. I really wish Prince had released an official version of this back in the day.

It's a shame that this song wasn't released as a single.It'a a very good,well-structured pop song.It shoulda been a hit for somebody.

I really think that Prince should have included it on The Time's 'Ice Cream Castles'.That album needed a strong song like this.

Yes it was supposed to be Jesse's intro as a lead vocalist.

It should have appeared on that album in place of the filler track "Chili Sauce".

It's a funny song, but it really should have been a B-side.The album needed at least one more strong song and "Do Yourself A Favor" would have been perfect.
