I can't believe I only just noticed this.

I've listened to this album 100s of times, and I ONLY just noticed that on Mazarati's "100MPH", it drops into the riff from The Time's "Cool" at around 4minutes. Can't believe I never noticed before!

Casey says "Cool" three times before the band goes into the riff. I thought it was obvious. lol

biggrin Well hell,...that's alright player. Better late than never. I've always adored "100 M.P.H". P's demo version is cool too. No pun intended. The intro to this song, which comes up again in the middle and at the end, is one of my favorite passages P has ever done. Man, I played this album to DEATH in 86.

I guess it's just one of those things lol, I always heard it but it just didn't "click" in my conscious mind!

Anyway, any excuse for a Mazarati thread, right? lol I'm jamming to 'Don't Leave Me Baby' right now. This and 'Champagne Saturday' should have been included on the first album.

Man, you don't NEED any excuse to start a thread about MZ! "Champagne Saturday" is the jam. I would have like to have had that on their debut instead of "Suzy". That's the only song I couldn't ever fuck with for some reason. Wish Mz would have included "Jerk Out" on this album too. But Sir Casey felt uneasy about the lyrics so...

That's what I meant. I'll never miss any opportunity to talk about Mazarati. lol

I like "Suzy", the shit is funky. For me. the only song that I'll even consider skipping is "Lonely Girl on Bourbon St". I would switch that for "Champagne Saturday" or "Don't Leave Me, Baby" in a heartbeat.

Not that "Lonely Girl" is a bad song by any means. It just doesn't sit well with the rest of the album IMO. I have to be in a certain frame of mind to listen to that cut.

As for 'Jerk Out', you're right, would have been great to get that cut on there too. I believe it was this particular verse that Casey had an issue with:

I took her 2 my crib and I tied her up
I figured that's what she liked
Maybe I was wrong but what the hell
It didn't matter 2 me - she was white
I said "How come people in your neighborhood
Don't like it when a brother's rich?
Ain't my blood the same color as yours?
Answer that question, bitch!"

Of course, these lyrics got changed for The Time's version. Perhaps that's an indication of the fact that Morris had a bit more sway with Prince than Casey or Mark did, I don't know.

I truly don't believe those lyrics would have made it on MZ either. WB would have not let that got out and I don't think P wanted them out either. Not then. He did but he didn't, u know what I'm saying? That's raw ass Prince right there though. That's some Black Album shit...Those lyrics would have fit like a glove on that album. P had a softer version of interracial love of course with Ice Cream Castles by The Time. Although THIS lyric is NOT soft:
"It's raining. Mad sisters, why can't they realize that it won't be long?"
When I did some recording with Morris and Andre back in 95, I specifically asked him about this song. Because ever since I was a kid back in the early summer of 84, I remember when I first caught that's what Morris was actually singing, I was blown away that they would actually sing that lyric. It was SO bold. My first thought was "No wonder Prince isn't singing this!" Meaning there would be no way P himself would release this under his name. Although the music, the melody, the lyrics and the vibe of this song is PURE early 80's Prince. So I asked Morris about it and he said straight out that he never was crazy about the song. He didn't think it fit The Time's sound. I told him that I LOVED the song and thought it was cool as hell that The Time did it. I wouldn't have liked it as much if P had released it. It seemed "cooler" to me because The Time was doing it. Which was true. He said the lyrics, the theme, was "typical Prince." Those were his exact words. I was always surprised that P's and The Time's black female audience never tripped off of that lyric.

I agree with you,black..."Suzy" is the one track that could have been taken off the album and replaced with a stronger song. The B-side track "Don't Leave Me Baby" should have been on the album instead of "Suzy".

I like "Suzy",but I think it's sorta filler-ish,you know what I mean? It's more like a joke than a "real" song.

Damn, those lyrics are crude! lol I don't blame Casey for refusing to sing that.I'm actually surprised that Prince would write something like that.
